From today, I'm starting a small series of daily devlogs where I'll be describing the changes being implemented before the official release of the first version of /kbin. As I mentioned earlier, I had some minor turbulence in my private life from which I'm slowly emerging. I have partially stabilized my life situation in various...
I started web dev in 1999. It can be one of the most progressive branches of development. I’m using a completely different stack today than I was two years ago. Every day I use a whole suite of different tools and languages. It can be a lot of fun if you enjoy the whole process of learning new technologies.
As part of their new partnership, Alpine and Reddit are launching a set of Collectible Avatars on the site, which users will be able to download and use on the platform.
Was digging through a project at work today where some guy in 2014 made 100+ commits in a single day and the only one that had a comment said “upgrading to v4.0”.
I’ve use a CalDigit TS3 Plus on my MacBook Pro for a couple of years, it’s pretty reliable. There is a lot of noise over the headphone port though, so I don’t use that.
Factory building and automation sim Factorio has a fresh stable release out, continuing years of free upgrades and it now has gamepad controller support.
I saved up for a bit and bought a Herman Miller Embody. Yes, it’s really expensive. But, it’s just effortless to sit in from morning at work all the way to late evenings with after work games. I love it so much. And after two years it has absolutely zero signs of wear except for some dust on the back. I’m very happy with the purchase.
Man, I spent so much time finding crazy ways to get high when I was in college—crazy bongs, hydroponics, lettuce hash, and even electronic hash smoking device I built from plans in High Times. I probably could have solved cold fusion if I would have directed my energy more appropriately.
I've been playing during the early access and it's pretty good. It was neat to see the progress they made with each patch. It's not like the other Baldur's Gate games though.
University of Virginia School of Medicine researchers have discovered how cells that let us hear can repair themselves after being damaged, an insight that could benefit efforts to treat and prevent hearing loss.
Key passage:
“The real message of this study is that overweight as defined by BMI is a poor indicator of mortality risk, and that BMI in general is a poor indicator of health risk and should be supplemented with information such as waist circumference, other measures of adiposity (fat), and weight trajectory,” said study first author Dr. Aayush Visaria, an internal medicine resident physician at the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
Is PHP still a relevant language in today's day and age? I know a LOT of languages and it just never occurred to me to learn this one, because anyone I've ever been aware of writing a backend these days would either choose Node or one of several compiled languages. Lemmy uses Rust for it's backend which is highly desireable,...
I’m currently involved in a rewrite! One of very few in 20 years of dev work. We prototyped our front end in node/js and we’re rewriting in React. We’re largely keeping the express backend, though.
Mainly tooling and a few ill conceived React components that never really fit anywhere and are now polluting our new build process until we are able to rewrite them.
Sorry, I meant non-business and tech, for example. I guess you could call it headline news. The problem I’m seeing is that the algorithms for kbin and Lemmy aren’t that great yet and seem to ignore low user subscribed communities. With many different news communities they all tend to get buried unless I catch them on the new filter.

Stupid Question, not an insult: Why is kbin written in PHP?
