I don’t think they are, they’re more akin to forums.
In my mind, social media is where you follow people and people broadcast their lives. That’s the social aspect of it.
With Reddit and Lemmy we follow communities on topics we’re interested in.
I do get the arguments for it to be social media but that just makes the category way too broad, as you could argue any site with a comment section is social media.
How is this a controversial take? If you need a wall to keep people in or attempting to emigrate makes you a “defector”, or you’ve built up a huge surveillance network where your neighbours or even partners can report you for bullshit “crimes” , you’re an authoritarian state.
It seems to take nearly 10 minutes to get started. What’s actually happening? Are the pistons literally unable to move in the cylinders until the engine is warm enough?
Car manufacturers have called for urgent action to reignite the switch to electric vehicles, after sales figures showed slowing demand among ordinary motorists for battery-powered cars....
This is essentially it. The surge in demand probably came from company cars and those who can afford to buy expensive cars, but now that demand has been met then sales have dropped off. We’re not yet in the market to replace our car but I do keep an eye on things, and every time I look at a new EV, they’re like 30 or 40k over what I’d be willing to pay.
I imagine it’s an issue of economies of scale, they’re more expensive because they’re producing less than ICE vehicles; the only way to get them cheaper would be for some heavy government subsidies.
Those aren’t compliant. The reject all needs to be as prominent as the accept all option without any additional clicks. So many sites get it wrong it’s insane!
Does this include teachers, water treatment workers, bin collectors, nurses, doctors, nuclear power plant workers, firemen, train and bus drivers, care and social workers?
I’ve heard people doing this and then getting black listed from the entire banking system. Can’t open bank accounts, access any credit, and the banks don’t have to tell you why you’re blacklisted. It’s supposed to be very very difficult to undo.
Do you consider Lemmy/Reddit (and similar platforms) to be social media?
I had this discussion with a friend, and we really couldn’t reach a consensus....
Why are socialist and communist countries usually considered more authoritarian than capitalist countries?
