Quite possibly a luddite.

"Quite literally as bad as the Nazis" is a bit hyperbolic.

Not at all defending their stance at all. It's just that being as bad as the Nazis is a really high bar, and by being that bombastic you risk distancing people who might otherwise be open to your arguments.

I personally don't think the term fascism is applicable either, but that's being pedantic. You don't need to be fascist to be awful - you just need to be awful to be a fascist.

Assuming they are indeed denying or in favour of the Uyghur genocide (i never saw the original post, but I'm assuming it's true), that is really everything anyone should need to know.

Thanks! I heard the claims echoed a few times, but never saw the sources.

It's also important to distinguish between Marxism and Communism.

Communism neither started nor ended with Marx, and Lenin, Trotsky, and Mao are all theorists as well as practitioners. I guess the ml in lemmy.ml might be for marxist leninist.

Communism is inherently more about communitarian ownership, and leninism is basically an excuse why you still need a strongman on top of said communitarianism. Trotsky among others wrote about how the end justifies the means, which did not end well for him when Stalin put it to practice.

Tankies argue that murdering millions was part of the plan; for Nazis murdering millions is the plan.

They both suck. I just think comparing to Nazis served more to distract than to emphasise - I think the atrocities can speak for themselves.

What is your favorite Mastodon client?

Hey everyone, super excited to be exploring the fediverse both here on kbin and elsewhere. Looking for a Mastodon client primarily for iOS, great to see the main app is open-source, but there seems to be quite a few options out there. Feel free to share non-iOS clients for others' benefit as well....

I've been using Trunks lately, but will probably go back to Tusky. They're both great, but switching between accounts is easier in Tusky, and it's FOSS.

Bonus: Tuba is an amazing app for any GNOME users out there!

For some reason, Give Them Enough Rope by the Clash was an early influence on me. Love that album.

I started out with what I consider to be some sort of trinity of Clash, Ramones and the Pistols, so if I am to list two more albums not by the Clash it would probably have to be Ramones' self titled album and Never Mind the Bollocks.

The Pogues followed right after. It took me a couple years more before I was ready for hardcore punk, and local bands didn't exist before I moved to the city for uni. That said, very little competes with the Clash still.

As someone "outside of the community", I don't think I have ever talked to anyone who hates lgbtq+. Granted, I'm a filthy (European) liberal, and it's not the first thing I talk to people about, but still.

If anything, I'm tired of this being a politicized issue - I just wish the small, insecure, socially conservative bigots would crawl back in their hole so that we go back to focus on less obvious issues than "whether sexual minorities should have human rights". It's a stupid question and I don't want to waste any more time on it.

For iOS users looking for an app, there is a quick and easy solution

I apologize if this has already been covered, but I’ve seen a lot of people talking about a need for a kbin app. While I agree that a native app would be nice to have eventually, I figured that quite a few people probably aren’t aware of how web apps work. I don’t use Android, so I have no idea if there is an equivalent...

sab,
sab avatar

If the experience here will be anything like Mastodon, there is going to be a lot of apps very soon. :)

I would be surprised if there weren't at least a couple disgruntled third party Reddit app developers currently looking into developing kbin and/or Lemmy apps.

sab,
sab avatar

Both are fine really.

I wouldn't use any of the Lemmy instances owned by the developers, but you can criticize the Chinese Communist Party all you want on Lemmy instances not owned by the developers. And it's open source, so if they try to make it worse it will be forked.

Kbin is way too early in development for the kind of attention it's currently receiving. That it is holding up as well as it does is impressive, but it's more than just a little rough around the edges. The delevoper is super impressive, but it's currently one man: I wouldn't blame him at all if he got sick of it and abandoned the project a month from now. At which point it would, of course, need a new maintainer.

sab,
sab avatar

It's not hypocritical at all. The backlash against Reddit is not primarily about convenience, it's about principles.

Third parties are free to develop apps for the fediverse, and they will always have the right to do so. It might be slightly ironic that there are no apps yet, but not at all hypocritical. :)

sab,

Somehow I feel like people who understand fungi should have an easier time understanding the Fediverse as well. All these instances you see popping up everywhere are somehow connected and all part of the same whole, even though they could appear far apart.

I see a bright future for these communities.

Why are you not seeing as many posts from Lemmy communities on Kbin?

Hello! You may have noticed that the majority of posts and threads in your feed on Kbin are from within the platform itself. This is because the admin has activated Cloudflare DDoS protection which basically slows down requests to kbin, to prevent the website from experiencing downtime or becoming slow to respond....

sab,
sab avatar

I love that the gigantic 2000 people greed circus of the other platform is currently being challenged by a single developer who would seemingly never have imagined raising $350.

Pssst... any ideas for a domain name for the new instance?

Hi there! I've been trying to improve the situation for the past few hours. I managed to disable CF Protection, and as you can see, I'm gradually allowing traffic from the fediverse. There may still be delays in deliveries and posts for some time. If anything is particularly troublesome, please let me know through the contact...

sab,
sab avatar

My intuition is that Kbin shouldn't be responsible for running more instances than necessary - ideally, the running, administration, and mainstainance of instances should be left to other people (like Fedia.io). Developing Kbin while running kbin.social (and the polish instances) seems to me to be enough work already. :)

I get that it's a lot of pressure on kbin.social right now, but in the long term I think having only one English language kbin-run instance makes the most sense.

sab,
sab avatar

I don't think Mastodon and kbin scratch the same itch - I have been using Mastodon for years already and it's great for following interesting people and participating in good faith discussions. Kbin seems like a power tool of procrastination, which I'd argue Mastodon is certainly not.

In the end Mastodon is less entertaining, but for me personally that's the appeal of it.

sab,
sab avatar

I'm not sure I understand the question, sorry!

The best way to use it is to follow users and hashtags of things you're interested in. It is a lot like Twitter, in that you push posts and people can answer them.

There might be two main differences from Twitter. First, it's must harder to go viral, meaning that different users will generally see completely different content (unless something is "boosted" across the network). Second, but maybe because engagement is spread more across the platform, the atmosphere is much more chill. The toxicity Twitter is famous for is really rare, and when you see it it's easy to mute people.

sab,

I hadn't heard of Squabbles before, so I naïvely thought the post was about the squabble between Kbin and Lemmy. :)

sab,
sab avatar

At least you managed to generate some engagement! ;)

sab,
sab avatar

I mean, kbin is pretty much for people who are happy to test alpha software. I don't blame people for finding it a bit off-putting.

...personally, I might lose interest once it stops being rough around the edges. I like the feeling of this place right now.

Meloni belongs to the party Fratelli d'Italia (Brothers of Italy), which is the direct successor to MSI - they even use the same logo. MSI was the openly neo-fascist successor to the National Fascist Party, the party of Mussolini. Half its ministers are former MSI members, meaning that they are (or were, a few years ago) openly fascist. Let's just say it's not a good look.

sab,

Somehow managed to stay within the political circus until the bitter end. I wish I could say this was the end of an era, but there's a whole new generation of clowns ready to fill his oversized shoes.

sab,

Just a tip: If you enter the lemmy url in the search bar, you'll find the same post in kbin. You'll be able to upvote and post comments just as if you were watching it from lemmy.

Here's the post you linked, within kbin.social: https://kbin.social/m/lemmyworld@lemmy.world/t/9554/Hello-Can-we-normalize-a-few-things

That said, I agree with the sentiment, even if I'm terrible at posting things myself. :)

sab,
sab avatar

I think in the most part you're right in that it's "cheap" content, but an exemption would be those posting pictures of themselves (be it for fun or for self-promotion). They might be among the ones to suffer the most from Reddit's change of policies, and they have a lot to gain from decentralized networks where they gain ownership over their publications.

I guess more specialized servers might appear at some point, and of course it's up to the owners of each server whether they want to host their content. I do think, however, that the software should be built to empower these people as well, as they might need it more than most.

sab,
sab avatar

I think there's also a huge difference between at least four types of explicit content:

  1. Normal content that prudish people would be upset by, like a picture of Michelangelo's David or a news article about a tribe in the Amazonas. I don't think this should even be tagged NSFW. I mean, come on.
  2. Self-posting, which can be well moderated and is generally unproblematic if tagged NSFW (and the creators are consenting adults, obviously).
  3. Generic non-original content, which is more problematic and often stolen from somewhere. This is the tricky gray zone. Some content is fine, other might be problematic both ethically (reposting someone's intimate pictures from for example a closed only fans account) and legally (copyright).
  4. Revenge porn and all the shit that shouldn't ever be on the internet to begin with. This needs to be avoided at all cost, and servers posting it need to be de-federated asap. This is probably the greatest existential threat along with right wing trolls.

I think the first should be allowed on any server. The second and third are fine as long as long as they are well moderated - whether they're up to the task I guess is up to whoever maintains the instance.

I'm new here, (from reddit) and I'm a little confused about reputation points and posting?

I don't know really how and what the reputation points mean. Does it mean you can't post to some threads, or post to certain areas, having come here from reddit does reputation = karma? I have only posted one reply and already I am a -8.

I like to interact but do I have to be careful what I post even if my opinion is not in line with the general consensus of a thread? I really don't wan to get off on the wrong foot before I know how things work here.

I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to say this but I hoped someone could help before I sank into oblivion.

@VE3VVS

In case you're interested in understanding what's going on: There are two common reactions to posts in the Fediverse. In Mastodon terms, these are "favourites" and "boosts". Favourites are kind of a "compliments to the chef", with no real consequence. Boosts serve to increase visibility.

Until recently, upvotes in kbin equated boosts on Mastodon, meaning that every time you upvoted a post it would be boosted for anyone following you on Mastodon. I'm guessing it was at this point the karma system was developed, and karma points are therefore calculated as (boosts - downvotes), rather than (upvotes - downvotes). Since the boost button is a bit anonymous and it's not really obvious what it's there for, it is much easier to generate downvotes than boosts. :)
