Hey keebinetters and fediverse, what are your favourite kbin/fediverse magazines (communities)?

Lets make a thread to post our niches that we have found here. Big magazines are ok too.

I'll start: /m/mechanicalkeyboards, so glad it migrated here!

Edit: You can add a direct fediverse link (so that any users from any fediverse instance looking at this post can click on it) with the following two methods:

Click on the "link" button in the text editor, or manually write in the following format (all together):

[ /m/mechanicalkeyboards ] ( https://kbin.social/m/mechanicalkeyboards )

OR (all together):

@ mechanicalkeyboards @ kbin.social

Edit 2: magazine / community names are case-sensitive apparently, mind the uppercase letters!

cache_miss,

Working on getting /m/darkroom off the ground for anyone interested in darkroom processing or analog photography more generally. Come take a look!

I feel like these type of communities are going to be drawing folks here, thanks for creating the magazine and posting!

cache_miss,

Thanks for the support! I'd really like to see kbin succeed. I've been feeling a bit artistically uninspired lately, so this has been a great way for me to get back into the hobby myself ;)

Lazycog,
Lazycog avatar

I'm also rooting for kbin! I want this to be my new home. And yess, hope you find your muse again :)

CFinley97,

This is awesome. I loved r/analog, it was one of fav places online. You've encouraged me to post!

Excited for this magazine!

cache_miss,

Just saw your post—thanks for adding it! We're excited to have you.

Labototmized,

I really enjoyed /r/photocritique. Do you know of a similar place on the fediverse somewhere? I'm having no luck myself & I'm not really sure what all goes in to starting a community myself...

cache_miss,

I did a quick search on kbin and the Lemmy community browser and didn't see any dedicated photo critique spaces... yet! Of course you're welcome to post anything analog in /m/darkroom for feedback.

If you feel like you're up for committing a bit of time to moderating and growing a new space, creating a magazine is really easy—just mouse over the plus sign in the upper right, and click "Create New Magazine". You'll fill out a few details and you're all set. After creating mine, I filled out the sidebar with some basic info and created a sticky welcome thread so that the main page isn't blank until you get a few users. Then I posted in some related magazines on kbin and elsewhere trying to spread the word without being too obnoxious. I also made posts in /r/darkroom and /r/analog on Reddit. The good news is that my advertisements here were well received—it seems like everyone else is just as excited to see a new magazine getting started. Take a look at my profile if you need some examples, and feel free to post here if you decide to go this route and need some more help.

gonzo0815,

I aim to separate general mycological topics from ID requests, because the latter clogged up the sub back in the former homeland and was moderated much too laissez faire for my taste.

https://kbin.social/m/Mycology is the general mag.

https://kbin.social/m/MushroomID is for ID requests and mutual help at identification.

Somehow I feel like people who understand fungi should have an easier time understanding the Fediverse as well. All these instances you see popping up everywhere are somehow connected and all part of the same whole, even though they could appear far apart.

I see a bright future for these communities.

Lazycog,
Lazycog avatar

Didn't think of that... so, fungiverse?

gonzo0815,

If I didn't have two left hands with five thumbs each, i'd draw an image explaining the fediverse with fungi.

shogoll,

Trying to get the ball rolling at /m/ApexLegends, looking forward to having more people over posting content!

Sorry for the self-promotion

https://kbin.social/m/NihonFalcom

Ys is one of my favourite franchises, so I created the Nihon Falcom (the developer) magazine

Lazycog,
Lazycog avatar

Hey that was one of the aims of this thread, the self-promo is welcome. Thanks for the link!

CheddarGoblin,

Absolutely based. Ys is slept on like mattresses. Absolutely one of my favorite franchises anywhere, and I'll be joining this magazine.

Great. Thanks!!

avantgeared,

Ones that need to be here among many others:
permaculture
naturalgardening
machineshop machinist machining
woodworking japanesejoinery
carpentry
housebuilding
renewableenergy
frugalliving
drawing
desktopcomputers
homesteading
naturalfoods
cooking
tools

Alue42,

Along with permaculture and natural gardening, I loved the NoLawns subreddit, hopefully that'll pop up as a magazine here - I haven't wanted to jump in and start things without giving a chance to the previous mods a chance at it, along with the fact that I would have no clue what it would take to do that nor the time to mod

LunarLoony,
LunarLoony avatar

@nolawns - this what you're after?

Alue42,

Thank you! Subscribed! Maybe it was during the time the federation was off that I tried looking, or something.

How do I search kbin to find communities on Lemmy instances? For the life of me, all I can find are the local kbin magazines. They're great, but I'm newer here and already started participating in communities on beehaw and other instances. I'd like to be able to keep up with those communities too.

Honestly, the redundancy is looking like it's going to be a problem. There's a technology community of some sort on every instance for example. solarpunk, futurology etc.

Anyway, if someone knows the magic syntax where I can find and subscribe to these communities from kbin, I'd really appreciate it!

Edit: I'm an idiot. It looks like all you have to do is search for the right term. IOW, like Technology. So it's not likely that you'll find the exact same community if you don't know the correct community name or a partial name. There's no browsing of a Lemmy instance from what I can tell. Plus, I was using mobile until today. I think on my phone, the location of the community was truncated, so I had no idea that I'd already found the other communities I was already taking part in.

AFAIK they should appear in the magazine (community) search if atleast one person from kbin.social has subscribed, and first people on kbin.social to find them are finding them through sidebars of magazines, comments, and browsing other instances.

It works great on instances where this whole federation system is not broken, and I strongly believe it will work great here too! We just need to be bit patient since a mass migration is occurring on this instance which is held up by one person, who is constantly working on making the site scale up to the demand.

You can browse the already "connected" to kbin.social communities (some kbin.social user has searched a specific instance, i.e. typed into the search all together: @ deathcore @ lemmy.ml) to search already connected lemmy instances you can go to magazines tab and type "lemmy". When federation works again, you should see all the communities that have been connected to kbin.social by typing the community name.

EDIT: seems like the normal search (search icon on top bar) finds communities better which have not yet been connected. The federation being broken hinders the search a lot, but I was able to make the first connection to @firefox by typing (all together) @ firefox @ fedia.io and it made the link. Now anyone on kbin.social will find that community in the magazine search.

About the fragmentation of communities: this happens but it can have its benefits. When communities settle some might become more concentrated on a certain aspect of the topic, and crossposting will occur too so you don't have to worry about subscribing to all of them. I know that on reddit for example the original r/TikTokCringe was a cringe subreddit, but with time it became a home for all tiktoks (cool ones too). Someone decided to make a real TikTokCringe subreddit that fragmented from the original one and so on. Both had healthy amount of activity. The original actually became a sub for cool tiktoks, and the newer one the actual "cringe tiktok" sub.

Hope I could open up the topic a bit.

@Futurology
@solarpunk
@art
A few I've found on my travels so far. slrpnk.net is definitely a good place to look for green/sustainable communities.

The links don't work, could you fix them please? I'd like to subscribeto those places!

Lazycog,
Lazycog avatar

I think the links only work if you open them in a new tab right now, but decided to write them as links instead of tags:

/m/Futurology

/m/solarpunk

/m/art

Calvinball,

Right up my alley! Subscribed, thank you.

fiofiofio,
fiofiofio avatar

Thanks for that, still figuring out the formatting for things here

Lazycog,
Lazycog avatar

No worries, I'm also looking forward to a guide once things settle down and the kbin dev as time to properly document how things here work!

Rodsterlings_cig,

Favorite is /m/thescarydoor, which is basically /r/futurama.

And for self promotion, /m/tardigrades as a local kbin reimaginating of /r/hydrohomies

Lazycog,
Lazycog avatar

Awesome, thanks for the links! and can't wait for the memes on @tardigrades

ViridianNott,

This is deeply ironic because tardigrades are some of the best... if not THE BEST animals in the world at surviving without water for extended periods.

Source: I'm a biologist in a lab that studies tardigrades

Rodsterlings_cig,

To live without water, you must become water.

dosidosankofa,

Wanted to say thank you for the link, and also for the instructions there to tell me how to follow from kbin. Although I had to drop the initial ! to find a subscribe button. That is probably user error. fediverse is confusing af tbh

Lazycog,
Lazycog avatar

It takes awhile to get into it, but you'll get there!

The biggest difference with syntax is that lemmy uses the !exclamation mark and kbin uses the @at sign to link communities.

To make this thread more active for shy/new users I'll add another favourite:

/m/GuildWars2 for us MMO nerds!

Edit: added a proper link.

kats,

Yay GW2 is my go to, glad there is a spot here!

Lazycog,
Lazycog avatar

Yiss!! Consider posting your character or a nice game screenshot, lets make it lively :)

Mice and talking gabbages are my favourite

Lasairiona,

Great to start a collection of magazines! I'm still a little lost here... I'm looking for something along the lines of WitchesVsPatriarchy and general witchy/pagan magazines. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated =)

Lazycog,
Lazycog avatar

Hey! Don't you worry, I was too (and still kind of am), but you'll get the hang of it as you explore!

I could not find WitchesVsPatriarchy anywhere in the fediverse yet, but there is one witch community on Lemmy! I think you have heard that you can actually join communities on other websites (instances) from kbin, so you don't need to go and make a new account on each new website.

heres the witch community I found: /m/witches

The site is on lemmy, and since the federation is bit broken right now you don't get all the posts to kbin yet.. but hopefully soon!

calixte,

I just created /m/silksong, to deal with the eternal wait for Hollow Knight: Silksong. Come take a look!

kurgal,

Working on /m/Artificia. A magazine for artificial intelligence related contents. Come join me in building this community together.

I also run

The_OG_Rocketman, (edited )

I got a few small ones started this week, https://kbin.social/m/Espresso and https://kbin.social/m/Climbing for some of my favorite hobbies!

spencercw,

These links both 404. I think you need to capitalise the magazine names

Lazycog,
Lazycog avatar

You are right, was just reading on another thread that magazine names are case-sensitive. Have to check whether this has been posted as an issue to the developer.

@The_OG_Rocketman mind editing your links so people can directly click on the links to access your magazines?

The_OG_Rocketman,

Oh good looking out there, just got them changed. Thanks for the heads up!

dosidosankofa,

not going to do any climbing today or ever lol, but I did just finish an espresso so I'll see you there

I just created a sub for prog rock - hopefully I'm not stepping on anyone's toes. @prog
EDIT: also made a couple more, while I was at it!
@speedrun
@browncoats

Thaliff,

Thanks for creating these.

Edit -found_ the edit button I can't edit my previous post, but I'm an idiot, they work.combination of too early and no coffee...
