Quite possibly a luddite.

That is very good news. I am hoping it is not encrypted, as the owner seems to have no idea how to access how to access her apple account (which is another issue entirely and one I hope not to be involved with).

Thank you!

Thank you so much! It seems like reading these file systems shouldn't be a problem, so that's comforting. So this is making me feel hopeful. :)

Has anyone used or contributed to OpenStreetMap?

I’ve tried using it over the years but I never liked it because there was no information. So last night I looked at my local city and there is almost no information at all. I spent a few hours last night adding buildings and restaurants and removing incorrect items. It was actually kind of fun and therapeutic and I plan to do...

Downloaded! Thank you. :)

sab,

How do you log paths? If with an android phone, which app? And is it power intensive?

I do quite a bit of hiking, usually everything is well marked at OSM but there are some exceptions.

I would guess Threads has a very different target audience, namely younger users who couldn't care less about privacy. I don't think there will be that much direct competition between the two.

On Android K-9 is fantastic, but regrettably I'm currently using the stock Gmail app because I had trouble setting up my Office365 work email. Have to get back to it at some point.

On desktop I stick to the wonderful (for Gnome users, at least) @Geary. At some point I hope to use it on my phone as well. :)

sab,
sab avatar

Hopefully down the line communities can opt in to follow each other (I'm not sure where similar proposals to Lemmy have been made), so that they don't have to complete for content unless they choose to do so.

sab,

Yes, it absolutely depends on the field. I'm not arguing that for every proprietary software there is an equally good open source alternative, and especially in some of the fields you mentioned it is absolutely behind. I don't think anyone is arguing open source video games are better than proprietary ones, for an extreme example.

Saying that open source is lagging behind as a blanket statement is still as wrong as saying the opposite - it depends what you're doing.

sab,
sab avatar

That is true. /e/OS goes a long way to redeem this, but especially the network location provider can be hard to let go.

Ubuntu Touch would be a good choice if you want Linux on your Pixel 2XL right away. While there is a port in the works for PostMarket OS, the Ubuntu Touch port is much more feature complete, and can probably be used as a daily driver if you're not dependant on Android apps (or can get Waydroid up and running).

Ubuntu Touch is not, however, mainline Linux: it keeps drivers from the Android kernel in place in order to maintain hardware support without having to build everything from scratch (like is forced to do). Furthermore there are some controversial (albeit reasonable) design choices limiting the system a bit more than most mainline Linux phone operative systems. In effect, you'd be mostly limited to the native offerings of the Open Store, deprived for now of all the wonderful apps developed for Gnome or Plasma Mobile.

That said, I have used quite a bit, and the drawbacks in my experience is mostly the same as for any Linux phone (more than anything the fact that I depend on proprietary systems such as WhatsApp). The user experience with Lomiri is amazing, Ubuntu Touch is snappy with some great apps, and the community over at @ubports are a friendly bunch. :)

(I deleted this message once and tried sending again as federation with Lemmy.ml was broken - I'm not sure it will come through now either though)

The main developer of the official android app for lemmy, Jerboa, is a communist

Edit: **I have nothing against Lemmy or its developers. I enjoy the platform and have been a user for a long time (despite this account being created only yesterday)**I was on lemmy.ml and Beehaw before this Just sharing for anyone who cares. I have nothing against Lemmy and understand that the software can be used regardless of...

sab,

I guess Steve Ballmer's logic that linux is communism would apply here as well though.

Both make my life easier on occasion, so I happily use both. When something is available in the distro repositories I generally prefer that.

I feel like Ubuntu is pushing Snaps a bit too much by default, especially since it takes up more disk space and I don't entirely see the benefit. That said, I now use Fedora and am still happily using Snaps for a few programs.

The Discord alternative probably should be end-to-end encrypted, so I guess Matrix or something would be a better alternative than the Fediverse. Or just IRC if it's public ;) In either case it's probably a good example of where the Fediverse is not the solution (but decentralizzato might still be).

Fanfiction I guess could be federated - I don't know how these services work. Personally I'm waiting for a good federated TripAdvisor/Yelp alternative that can be integrated with OpemStreetMaps.

Wikipedia is wonderful, and probably shouldn't be decentralized. Then again, it's one of the few good things about the contemporary internet (along with archive.org).

Good point. Comintern and subsequent campaigns served more as a tool for Soviet propaganda and influence than anything else, and it had a huge impact on communism in Europe. It makes sense that anyone left in the rubbles of that ideology would be leaning towards authoritarianism and pro Russia/China at pretty much any cost.

Looks neat! I wish there would be a greater focus on upgrades though - if an even better camera module was released for the Fairphone 3 I would buy it in a heartbeat.

I don't really see the point of the notch, but I guess marketing towards people who are already happy with their Fairphone 3 would be a failed strategy to begin with. ;)

Yes, the text under the picture is misinformative for no good reason. It's still the wage of many of the people picking the fruit that retailers somehow end up selling for outrageous prices in NY supermarkets, so I'd argue it's something any American should be concerned about no matter how backwards their particular state is in this regard.

mike, to fediverse

So I did figure out that yes, #Mastodon can federate #Lemmy and #Kbin content. The problem is that Mastodon doesn't know what to do with it, so it (the group) looks like a user that boosts all posts and comments.

I found myself browsing the "federated group" @selfhosted over on https://kbin.social, as I think Kbin has a nicer UX for it.

I didn't really want to create a separate account for group stuff, but that might be what we do in the short term. 🤔

sab,

@73ms @selfhosted @mike

I'm not sure how Lemmy handles microblogs with linked media, but at least in kbin it's not possible to post a "thread" from a microblog service. In Lemmy the distinction matters less as they are all presented in the same feed. In kbin I expect microblog integration to get better in the future, but I think there will always be a distinction between "posts" and "threads".

When introducing members to kbin/lemmy don't mention the fediverse!

I introduced kbin to someone today who asked what the fediverse was. I answered for them of course, but it made me realize that the concept is still technobabble for most people. The average joe probably doesn't care or notice that server A is really talking to server B. Just have them find out on their own and if a mass...

sab,
sab avatar

Absolutely - I'm coming from the assumption that they are given a list of reasonable instances (for example from the kbin front page or from recommendations).

Among a curated list of servers, it's probably best to join one without assigning too much importance to it, and rather change instance later should you be unhappy. But of course, some instances should not be considered, and some might prefer to join an instance with stricter/more lenient moderation right off the bat.

sab,

The difference between links to user pages and to magazines remains one of the great unresolved mysteries of kbin in my book. Lemmy solves it with using a ! instead of @ for their version of magazines, making the link !gettingstarted . Still curious how it is going to be solved (or is solved?) here.

What is your favorite Mastodon client?

Hey everyone, super excited to be exploring the fediverse both here on kbin and elsewhere. Looking for a Mastodon client primarily for iOS, great to see the main app is open-source, but there seems to be quite a few options out there. Feel free to share non-iOS clients for others' benefit as well....

sab,
sab avatar

I've been using Trunks lately, but will probably go back to Tusky. They're both great, but switching between accounts is easier in Tusky, and it's FOSS.

Bonus: Tuba is an amazing app for any GNOME users out there!

sab,
sab avatar

I'm not sure I understand the question, sorry!

The best way to use it is to follow users and hashtags of things you're interested in. It is a lot like Twitter, in that you push posts and people can answer them.

There might be two main differences from Twitter. First, it's must harder to go viral, meaning that different users will generally see completely different content (unless something is "boosted" across the network). Second, but maybe because engagement is spread more across the platform, the atmosphere is much more chill. The toxicity Twitter is famous for is really rare, and when you see it it's easy to mute people.

I'm new here, (from reddit) and I'm a little confused about reputation points and posting?

I don't know really how and what the reputation points mean. Does it mean you can't post to some threads, or post to certain areas, having come here from reddit does reputation = karma? I have only posted one reply and already I am a -8.

I like to interact but do I have to be careful what I post even if my opinion is not in line with the general consensus of a thread? I really don't wan to get off on the wrong foot before I know how things work here.

I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to say this but I hoped someone could help before I sank into oblivion.

@VE3VVS

In case you're interested in understanding what's going on: There are two common reactions to posts in the Fediverse. In Mastodon terms, these are "favourites" and "boosts". Favourites are kind of a "compliments to the chef", with no real consequence. Boosts serve to increase visibility.

Until recently, upvotes in kbin equated boosts on Mastodon, meaning that every time you upvoted a post it would be boosted for anyone following you on Mastodon. I'm guessing it was at this point the karma system was developed, and karma points are therefore calculated as (boosts - downvotes), rather than (upvotes - downvotes). Since the boost button is a bit anonymous and it's not really obvious what it's there for, it is much easier to generate downvotes than boosts. :)
