I always used to follow the war on Reddit but I am trying to stay away as much as possible. So how can I follow it without Reddit or Twitter? Does anybody have a good alternative? Thanks in advance....
ukraine community over at sopuli is great if you sort by new, just trying to get more traction there in the form of people commenting. Posts for info, comments for fun.
I've been wanting to check out Mastodon and a good app helps me be more engaged. My issue is that there are lots of interesting apps so I don't which one to pick! Which one do you like and why?...
Yup! Tusky for sure, don't know about the other apps. The official app is great but missing many features still. Give Tusky a go if you decide to try Mastodon again!
In Reddit, users can create lists of subs, called “multireddits”. And you can browse the content of all those subs in a multireddit as if it was a single community. You can also share your multireddits with other people....
This is possibly in the works I believe. They are currently discussing about the implementation and what additional things it could bring to the table that would make it work even better (for example somehow integrate the idea with Mastodon hashtags).
The link I provided is old, but there is still active discussion and many more contributors, so we could see this happening soon!
Yup! I'm pretty excited for what's going to happen in the next 2 months! As for the timelines: Could be, there are two threads discussing this. Here is the second one.
Personally I'm up for anything, I'd just like to stop constantly switching between 5 communities that are all the same but on different instances.
When they said Reddit has 2000 employees I was shocked. what could they possibly do onto a website that is basically run by users (and sysadmins) and that is basically feature-wise mature? I really can’t figure out 2000 people working every day on Reddit… on what? just for a quick comparison, the whole IAmA was run by a...
I am so sorry I did not realize Kbin does that... no wonder I've had issues. I usually post on my lemmy account but have really been liking kbin lately. Seems I don't even have an option to post with "undefined" language.
Now, you put it exactly how I feel about this topic! I got into it from a blog post, checked out the infamous "minimalists" and Marie Kondo, but felt like the message is the same and feels like they are just trying to make a lot of money on the concept of minimalism after the first two paragraphs of text. Be it podcast, netflix show or anything else.
The great thing I got from it all was the mentality against consumerism. I didn't realize how social media conditioned me to follow the latest trends and buy the newest gadgets.
Thanks for your awesome response (and sorry about the post settings).
I'm so sorry about the post settings... Didn't realize that affects federation!
And I agree, I couldn't read or watch anything related to the topic after realizing it's seen as a goal. I do see it as a great starting point into being more mindful of the life around you.
Thank you for taking the time to rewrite your answer!
Lemmy has been running for 4 years (don't know how long they developed it before releasing the first beta), Kbin barely for 2 months. Just putting that out there! Love both though.
Don't know if you mean that profile pictures hiding should be a magazine specific setting, but you personally can hide profile pictures (and magazine logos) in your side bar settings.
I personally liked the gold-silver awards, but felt like adding million award options really cluttered the UI. But I agree it's a great way to get some money for server hosting.
Nevermind, cleared cache and refreshed the page and set them again to display and then hide again - you are right it's broken. Hopefully they fix it soon.
I would like to have a "Local" filter to only show kbin magazines. It would be listed with "Subscribed", "All", etc. That way I could filter without tuning Federation off in the settings.
Isn't that what the "Federation On | Off" setting basically does?
On your sidebar, next to the settings gear there is the connection-icon and you can turn off federation so that you only see magazines and content only from your local instance.
This hasn't been documented (and I haven't tested), but I'm fairly certain that on user level you can't block your comments and posts from getting federated with other instances. That would be instance-admin level settings.
The federation on/off button should only hide federated content from you, but I'm not sure if it even applies to the stuff that has already been loaded into your feed, as I still see some content from other instances if I turn it off, but could be due to other kbin users who have commented on the thread so you'd only see kbin users comments.
Still waiting for bit more documentation on kbin, but I'm sure a lot of it will change as ernest and other contributors work on the code.
The syntax for @ signed magazines seems to be a bit broken, right click the link and press "open in a new tab" to get there, or alternatively use this link: /m/Tardigrades
Yeah I understand, I'm bit hesitant to ping ernest since his hands are absolutely full, but maybe the question OP and you have really could use an answer so that we could do something about this. Hey @ernest , if you see this, is it possible to:
Hand down a magazine ownership to another user
give ownership of an instance to another user if the original owner has gone MIA?
Damn that was a quick answer, appreciate it ernest!
@Shortcake@man0fbass I guess you guys should privately message ernest to resolve these issues.
You can private message by going to his account page and click on the "send a message" on the side bar of that page.
Now that I (I think) understand federation I was going to unblock the beehaw communities since I should still be able to vote and comment on them but I can’t find them now.
AFAIK there were trolls commenting and harassing beehaw communities from .world and lemmy (I believe also Kbin) lack proper moderation tools to counter that. Supposedly it's only temporarily blocked until those required tools are implemented.
If you didn't know, on DuckDuckGo you can search for posts or magazines with site:kbin.social just like you would with Reddit. The same applies to any other Fediverse site like Kbin, Lemmy, Mastodon, etc.. I was really frustrated because it seems like Google was intentionally suppressing them....
Hey thanks for the tip! I also felt like fediverse was being suppressed by google, but wasn't sure whether thats the case or does google just need time to properly index these sites.
Agreed. Wouldn't mind to subscribe on all 3 and get posts to my feed.
Additionally, Lemmy and Kbin are being actively developed, maybe this new wave of people pushes them to create tools so that you can combine magazines and communities into one metafeed/community where you see all the posts to all three communities.
I'm quite new to Lemmy, one of the reddit refugees. I used reddit to mostly browse mapmaking, ttrpg's, adventure writing, D&D etc. Would love a little guidance on where I could find a nice community like that here on Lemmy.

Best way the follow the Ukraine - Russia War without Reddit ?

What app do you use for Mastodon?
I've been wanting to check out Mastodon and a good app helps me be more engaged. My issue is that there are lots of interesting apps so I don't which one to pick! Which one do you like and why?...
Multireddits would work better in Lemmy than in Reddit.

How many of you are really into minimalism alongside Simple living?
To me it all started with bumping into r/minimalism years ago (shoutout to !minimalism, the migrated r/minimalism) and reading books about it....
Seems like federation is broken again?
I generally like to browse Newest but noticed its only coming up with posts from this instance again RIP

What Reddit features do you *not* want kbin to have?
in what ways do you think kbin should strive to be different from Reddit?

Would anyone else find a "Local" filter useful?
I would like to have a "Local" filter to only show kbin magazines. It would be listed with "Subscribed", "All", etc. That way I could filter without tuning Federation off in the settings.

Just found out that DuckDuckGo can be used to search Fediverse sites easily.
