Taokan,

It feels like there’s a lot of potential here. One of the most loved colony sims, Dwarf Fortress, thrives on this concept of emergent behavior: yes, the descriptions of the individual characters, their motivations and backstories does have a sort of hollow, procedural generation to them. But the stories they enable, the wacky quirks like an engraver going nuts putting up murals to cheese on everyone’s walls, the fact that when you get an unlikely hero or battle outcome it isn’t the author’s giving them destiny but a true random fluke, the unexpected disaster of opening an unseen water or lava flow or awakening some ancient evil - that can create a wonderful sandbox where players encounter and create their own stories.

There’s a balance in story telling, especially interactive story telling, between romanticism and realism. Between what we want to happen, and what actually happens. And sometimes, oftentimes, it’s the things we didn’t want to happen that make a story more compelling and memorable.

Pons_Aelius,

Not surprising. The 10K steps idea was first set by a Japanese maker of pedometers as a marketing exercise with zero research to back it up.

Pirasp,

If you are 60+, otherwise it’s 8-10k

LilB0kChoy,

Saved you a click: Per the article it’s closer To 6,000

LilB0kChoy,

Or 7,000, or 6,000-8,000. If we’re going to nitpick there’s a lot of numbers tossed out in the article, but then somebody who reads it doesn’t really need to be saved a click.

the optimal number is probably closer to 6,000 steps per day, depending on your age.

In 2021, Paluch and her team published research based on a cohort of more than 2,000 middle-aged individuals living across the US. They found taking at least 7,000 steps a day reduced chances of premature death by 50 to 70 percent.

For adults aged 60 and older, this reduced risk topped out at around 6,000 to 8,000 steps a day. Pushing further might have other benefits, but a reduced chance of death isn’t one.

The study found that those who are younger could do well to walk a little more, but there wasn’t evidence that they’d necessarily live longer by walking more than 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day.

But if nothing else, setting our sights on at least 6,000 to 8,000 paces before bedtime could be a far easier step towards a longer life.

Are things broken? I know Lemmy 0.19 has some federation problems but it seems like more than that is broken for about the last week.

It seems like just recently, everything broke. Posts from some other instances (Lemmy 0.19 or kbin) aren’t showing up here reliably anymore, and then sometimes posts from a few days ago will suddenly show up. kbin.social has a banner talking about unusual “problems” without going into detail....

I am working on ridding myself of the part of my mind that has been so poisoned by "hustle-culture" and all that nonsense that leads to me being ashamed of those creative or artistic endeavors that do not end up earning any money (or have no potential for it).

Stopped me from writing for years. Kept me from indulging in story telling and even reading.

Dear what are your strategies for dealing with such a horrid mindset?

My experience so far with microblogging services:

Threads: I'm in a wrong party and don't know what to say. I feel awkward, everyone is so happy with their gym selfies. Everyone asking endless questions and asking things from the algorithm. Lots of people use it like Instagram, every post is a selfie with a meaningless caption. Some are copy-pasting the same sentence over and over again for each line. Endless quote-post memes... What the fuck is this shit I don't even...

Bluesky: A Twitter clone, but still very barebones. Notifications are still not working, there are no hashtags and I don't find any relevant content to me in any of the feeds. It's mostly Facebook-like what's up in life, furry scene and AI photos. No news, no tech/web scene, no nothing. Not to mention it's still invite-only and won't support ActivityPub (yeah I know the reasoning behind that but for me it's mostly bullshit, I look forward to trying bridgy fed).

Mastodon and the Fediverse: Here I'm at home on my own server. Most content, most features. A community is friendly but has also lots of nitpicking, some angry dudes. Still the most safest, most healthy and most customized, but somehow the most hated network elsewhere. "Too techie", they say. "Too difficult", they say. "No algorithm", they say.

Nostr: Kinda promising, but way too obscure, strange and even techier than Mastodon. Too much crypto shit.

Well, that's that. Sometimes I feel like Internet is ruined. But I believe in the open social web movement and I want to see this grow.

In no other place I can write a status update as freely as this, as long as this or with a low bar as this. I LIKE this 100%. The same can't be said in those other places I'm experimenting with out of curiosity. There I'm the weird kid. Here I feel like myself.

@rolle feeling you on the ruins. At the very least we can celebrate some level of disaggregation. Thanks for doing this research!

MDKAOD,

Lol I thought the genre was called boomer shooter because you have an arsenal of guns that go boom while circle strafing and holding the mouse button.

SmoochyPit,

Interesting read— basically all games boiled down to running at “720p with 50% internal resolution”; that’s 360p internal resolution, less than the GameCube from 2001.

But, that’s paired with Lumen GI, high resolution textures, FSR2 or Epic’s TSR upscaling and a huge shift in how we render games (deferred rendering, temporal effects, normal mapping, etc). And on a Linux handheld. We came full circle in a way, but what a time to be a gamer!

What games from your backlog do you hope to try out this year?

I’ll go first: (it’s long)

Undertale
Papers, Please
Backfirewall_
Bear & Breakfast
Beyond Two Souls
The Blackwell Legacy (full series)
Death Stranding
Dishonored
Minute of Islands
Pony Island
Ring of Pain
Road 96
Sable
Smushi Come Home
Tails of Iron
Thymesia
TABS
Unpacking
The Walking Dead (full series)

If I finish 5-7 of these I’ll be happy :) I’ll likely ‘start’ every one of them, plus some. 😆
