...So, has anyone else encountered the argument against Modern Decadence? That is to say, the idea that the modern consumerist era is unreasonably decadent across the board?
Whether it's termed decadence or something else, there is, or ought to be, some sort of ratio between what the poorest and richest person has.
At some point the uneven distribution of wealth is no longer based on merit, is fairly cut off from the conceivable needs of an individual, and is necessarily at the expense of others
@skittixch eat more fiber, wash your hands after using the toilet, remember you are not your thoughts, remember everyone is their own main character so you can loosen up, remember this is finite, invest a little bit now for better returns than investing a lot later. Kbin has a guide if you need help using it. Apparently most phones now do best when you keep them charged between 20 and 80%. Sliding on the spacebar let's you scroll left and right across what you've typed.
I think it is helping me to read the "same" response from different sources. The repeated exposure as well as the nuances of each response aggregates into a better understanding. Hopefully I can pay it forward when I come across someone else asking it!
@Nepenthe Yeah it's a weird, throwback experience to recognize some usernames on here. I have to admit I never really registered any user on Reddit — I'm sure that's mostly on me and how I used it, of course.
I get that sense of marvel. I've been feeling unsatisfied with my online experience for a while and so far this jump into the fediverse feels like it's addressing what I felt was missing.
Is there a guide on how to use kbin? I'm primarily checking it out on my phone and I can't seem to quite figure things out. A magazine seems to basically be a subreddit, but I seem to only be able to find something equivalent to r/all, not r/frontpage. How do I see a collection of posts from the magazines I'm subscribed to?
@JokklMaster afa creating r/frontpage, check out the hamburger menu next to your name in the upper right. There are also mods you can find that create a more reddit like experience. I think that it's called kbin.it? Someone will have to correct me on that one.
@ryand3rk afaik (gonna be prefacing most of my answers with that...) It's meant to be a reflection of your total upvotes vs downvotes. I say "meant" because there might currently a bug which results in the ratio begin determined by boosts vs downvotes in consequence of which many Binners will have a low or negative score
Facinating to watch a potential #RedditMigration to the fediverse. The #Lemmy and #Kbin teams are dealing with all the same issues that Mastodon and other fedi microbloging sites did - but in even a faster timeframe as much of Reddit appears to be set to go dark on Monday. Questions of how to onboard, questions of centralized vs distributed onboarding, questions of how to explain servers and federation, and deep questions of how to scale if traffic is anyting like it could be Monday...
Other than not really having an idea how the hell this all works, I'm happy for the push out of reddit and, maybe even kind of enjoying the challenge of learning a new platform. It's been a while, but a long time, that was half the fun of getting online: discovering all the new platforms and ways of interacting that were being created.
