Just one uncomfortably sentient and angry automobile on a road trip through the fetaverse.

I think they officially changed the name to posts, rather than toots. But I always did feel like that held back the platform from being taken seriously. Like, can you imagine a news reporter saying, “Responding to the rise in reported domestic terrorism, President Biden tooted to the nation…”

Genuine question here, it looks like most of the info they’re collecting here could also be collected via scraping that info from any publicly available instance (profile pic, username, etc.)

What added info would they get from federation that isn’t already something we are giving away ourselves by participating in a public protocol like ActivityPub?

Thanks, this was the impression I got as well. It doesn’t make anything public that wasn’t already public, it just makes it easier and more likely for Meta to ingest the data more directly.

Are you ever disappointed by bands that completely change their music style?

I’ve noticed that the majority of bands I’ve loved since I was younger have entirely abandoned their old style for music that feels far more bland and uninteresting. It breaks my heart to no end when a band I’ve loved releases a new album and by halfway through you’re done with it....

If you like MM, Built to Spill will be right up your alley. Two of my favorite bands. The first two albums especially Keep It Like a Secret and Perfect from Now On, are classics of PNW indie rock.

There’s been two albums since. Strangers to Ourselves has some gems but I think a lot of people found to be a weaker release. The most recent one, The Golden Casket, I liked quite a bit better.

Tragically, Jeremiah Green, the drummer and one of the founding members of MM, passed away in Dec 2022. They haven’t disbanded or anything but their output might change pretty significantly from here on out.

The shortest concert I’ve ever been to was Monsters & Men right after they dropped their first album. They came on stage, played literally every song, and then said “thanks that’s all of them guys” and left. To be fair, it was all of them.

I binged as much Murderbot as I could about two years ago. Super fun reads. Plus I think the loosely connected novella format is interesting and makes them all that much bingier.

Wow that's really cool. The hybrid physical/virtual is a great touch, and the ability to customize what's in those top two rows would be amazing. So cool what you can do with modular open design!

Wow, crazy. I was looking up some context and found this Reuters article which says it’s the 8th West/Central African coup in three years.

Same thing happened to my friend, Shrek2 ThePassionoftheChrist in 2004.

Came to say exactly this. Especially given the wave of anti-LGBTQ legal attacks sweeping states like Mississippi electing their first openly gay rep is a big deal.

Memory Called Empire is a new favorite of mine. The sequel, A Desolation Called Peace, is also incredible.

That’s probably fair, I read them back to back so they kind of blur together for me haha.

How does that work in Taiwan then? They have the best fabs in the world and are incredibly earthquake prone. I know Taipei 101 has the huge earthquake dampener, I wonder if there something similar stabilizing TSMC plants?

Unfortunately they failed to stop the CCP’s National Security Law and the electoral reform which now ensures only “patriots” can run for office (see wiki synopsis). Hong Kong, in a political sense, is now only nominally separate from China. Such a heart-breaking loss.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to call on Democrats to codify 'Obamacare' into state law (abcnews.go.com)

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer will call on state lawmakers this week to pass legislation proactively protecting key provisions in the Affordable Care Act, including no-cost preventive services, as the nation’s health law continues to face legal challenges in federal court....

wrath-sedan,

Yeah I was about to say the same, that if the political will and power to solidify Obamacare is there then it would probably be feasible to expand it in some key ways too.

The article note that actual voters probably won’t see much of a difference. The main effect is an even more direct big donor to candidate money pipeline that will mean they’ll have even more influence than they already do.

Plus precedent of course, I imagine it’s usually easier to chip away at campaign finance regulations when you can cite other cases as evidence, but I’m no lawyer.

wrath-sedan,

That’s probably a trend but according to this (sorry dumb paywalled stats site but the relevant bit is in the free overview) as of now Broadcast TV is still the largest political ad market.

If you need chromium, your best option is probably ungoogled-chromium which is basically just bare bones chrome with as much telemetry and tracking taken out as possible.

wrath-sedan,
wrath-sedan avatar

Yeah it takes a few extra steps to get extensions/chrome store stuff like that. Probably not the best option if you’re just trying to slap it on a work computer in 5 mins.

wrath-sedan,
wrath-sedan avatar

True that’s what I use the vast majority of the time, but the OP specifically needed something chromium based.

A) The DOJ, FBI, and DHS which are mentioned are not the military. The only time the DOD is mentioned is to add training to keep current or retiring military personnel from being recruited by domestic terrorists.

B) Literally identified white supremacists as the number 1 threat

“In the FBI’s view, the top domestic violent extremist threat comes from racially or ethnically motivated violent extremists, specifically those who advocated for the superiority of the white race,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a speech Tuesday.

They also mentioned combatting “anti-government militia groups” some of which are certainly left-wing, but the vast majority being right-wingers like the Proud Boys.

No worries. Yeah not trying to argue that it’s always been a good faith effort at all, a lot of the bump in arrests this time around seems to be due to J6, but the data isn’t super clear. I think recently there has been a greater shift in attention to white supremacists and right-wing terrorists, but we’ll see if that trend holds.
