I’m no expert but I can do my best. Kbin was created by @ernest, and is actually a very young platform compared to even Lemmy. It let’s you post threads, similar to Reddit or Lemmy. Like Lemmy, it also uses something called ActivityPub, which means that Kbin users can see and comment on Lemmy threads and vice versa as long as the instances (ex. Lemmy.world, kbin.social) are “federated” meaning that they are talking to each other.

One of the big differences is that Kbin supports microblogging as well, similar to a Mastodon or Twitter post. Because of this, you can see and interact with content on Mastodon from Kbin much more easily, which also uses ActivityPub. Lemmy can also technically interact with Mastodon but it is not as seamless as threads don’t display that well on a microblog and vice versa.

There’s some more technical and cultural differences as well but I think that’s the biggest difference in function.

Mm mm sure does smell like EU legal action in here.

On a serious note, that is an absolute new low for Reddit and I’m sorry that you have to deal with it right now.

Enshittification: An explanation for why Reddit (and basically all corporate social media) is getting worse (pluralistic.net)

Hey everyone, I see a lot of people throwing around the term "enshittification" to describe the long-term and systemic decline of many of the centralized social media platforms, most recently Reddit. I commented this elsewhere, but thought everyone might benefit for reading Cory Doctorow's original article coining the term. The...

Why does it feel like we're at a point where every social media + other digital media are making shitty decisions and falling apart?

I mean there's Reddit ofc, as well as Twitter in its entirety, Discord is implementing some dumb updates, there are issues with Tumblr as well as everything to do with Meta, and I'm sure there are plenty more (and I haven't even touched other digital media, for example the Sims). Why is it all happening in the span of about a...

As a phenomenon you'll see a lot of people call it "enshittification." The term seems to originate with Cory Doctorow who writes, "Here is how platforms die: first, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die."

The whole article on his blog is worth a read here: https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/21/potemkin-ai/#hey-guys. His Mastodon handle is @pluralistic if you'd like to follow his work there (woohoo federation!).

Lemmy/kbin really feels like it's coming together

With our growth numbers and with kbin finally with Lemmy again, things around the link aggregator fediverse feel more active than ever. Today when browsing all on Jerboa I saw so many more communities, posts, and comments than even yesterday. It's starting to feel like we have some real traction going on here. Let me know if you...

wrath-sedan,
wrath-sedan avatar

I agree! Glad to see so much activity. I feel like there's still a lot of preference for FOSS/Reddit/Fediverse topics as that's obviously what brings a lot of people together here, so I think it will be a big milestone to see if some other non-tech communities take hold. Or maybe they won't and that's fine too! Just have to wait and see, and contribute where we can.

Two right now, this one and one on Bookwyrm I made way back. Going to be interesting to see how multiple accounts are juggled. From a user perspective it’s a little weird to view multiple types of content from one account (ie lemmy, Mastodon, kbin content from this account) but if I want to say post on pixelfed I’d need a pixelfed instance account. Maybe an app with multi-account management will come around that makes that a little easier. Or maybe eventually a mega-instance that is interoperable with every fedi-service? At that point is it just centralized again? Oof

wrath-sedan,
wrath-sedan avatar

While undeniably shitty, how amazing would it be if after instituting popular voting on mods more subreddits voted to go private? Not likely but it is tempting

I am running into a problem right now where I commented from this @kbin.social account on a @lemmy.world post, and then another @kbin.social account replied to me. I get the notification that I was replied to here on @kbin.social. But when I go to the kbin.social version of that lemmy.world thread, it shows none of the replies to my comment. Is there a way to manually federate those replies to pull them into this instance? In addition to being annoying that I have to leave this instance to see the comment, I also can't interact with them from lemmy.world using my kbin.social account.

EDIT: wow looks like they're federating now, I can see them from kbin. Have no idea what caused that, so if anyone cares to explain still I'm all ears!

When the migration was first being thrown around on Reddit I saw someone unironically refer to it as “the fetaverse” and I’ve been laughing to myself about it since. Glad that there are others to appreciate this god-tier pun.

Hey @Tencha! I had a similar idea and started up @learnChinese mainly because I hadn't seen any one else do it yet. Pretty indifferent to whichever zine gets used, just looking to make a community here! I was thinking of making some posts on my zine on some of the resources I used, is it alright if I cross-post them here too? Still getting used to the whole fediverse and the fragmentation of communities like this but looking forward to finding some people to 一起學中文!

wrath-sedan,
wrath-sedan avatar

No worries at all! Searching isn't all that intuitive yet and we are all learning. @chinese is probably more intuitive for people to find anyway so I'm happy to post here. If we are ever so successful we need to spin off a learning Chinese zine from a general Chinese one I can pick it back up haha.

wrath-sedan,
wrath-sedan avatar

The blackout might not be indefinite for everyone, but it will be for me because man I just kind of like kbin now.

Welcome to m/learnChinese!

大家好, I started this magazine as a place to group content related to learning Chinese. It doesn't look like there are currently any other magazines/communities on kbin or Lemmy that deal exclusively with Chinese language topics so let's be the first! Please feel free to share any questions you might have and hopefully we...

Does lemmy.world really have 22000 users already? (lemmy.world)

Since my last post yesterday, lemmy.world has added over 3000 new users, bringing the total user count to 22000 today (source: https://lemmy.fediverse.observer/list). It firmly holds the position of the second-largest lemmy instance, passing beehaw.org by a large margin of 10000 users....

wrath-sedan,
wrath-sedan avatar

Exciting to see such incredible growth in such a short time! I do feel like that until moderation tools improve some instances might do something similar to beehaw. Given beehaw noted it was hopefully a temporary solution and they have stricter content guidelines than most instances.

I agree with a lot that's been said that it's a personal decision. I will say that any time you have a question you would usually go to reddit to answer, try making your own post on kbin instead! Building that backlog of useful conversations somewhere outside of reddit I think will be super useful, so it's at least worth a shot.

wrath-sedan,
wrath-sedan avatar

Completely agree, that backlog of community-sourced information is truly enormous and has helped me so many times. Hopefully we can now start rebuilding it elsewhere.

wrath-sedan,

Yeah, kbeans just makes me chuckle every time I hear it. I'm actually pretty ambivalent about what name is used and maybe in the spirit of federation we end up with a handful of names

I think it's great that the mod mentioned that some subs, like theirs, are genuine community resources that will make people's lives much harder by being inaccessible. Much like how many actual public services didn't have a great way to interact with the public other than Twitter when Musk took over. I hope a balance is struck, and we can find a better way of building community resources that are accessible but not subject to the whims of power-tripping CEOs.

What are your thoughts about Obsidian not being Open Source?

Hi, I love Obsidian. It's part of my daily routine since a year or so, and I use it to store all my work and personal notes for the future. The main reason I use it is because of its note storage method. Instead of relying on a database, it utilizes plain text files written in Markdown, as most of you already know....

wrath-sedan,
wrath-sedan avatar

I use both pretty regularly. Logseq is my main workflow where I do fleeting task management and bulleted outliner-style notes. The PDF annotation in particular has been great. Obsidian I use mainly for condensing my thoughts in a more medium-length paragraph style note. There are several plugins to make them more interoperable with each other as well. I think they’re both great tools and the best way to figure out which you prefer is just to try them out and see which one fits your workflow best!

wrath-sedan,
wrath-sedan avatar

Yeah definitely don’t think Zettlr gets mentioned enough. Basically I use Logseq for short form bullets and task management. Obsidian for longer paragraph style notes or medium-length writing, and Zettlr for long-form writing and research. I like that they all seem built for a different kind of writing and thinking but all being markdown based I can use any one of them to read any of my md files.

Yeah, I’ve had to consciously not click the Reddit links recently when looking for a Mastodon client. On the plus side, it made me write my own post here on kbin asking the same question and the response was great! So glad to be a part of such a helpful community.

What is your favorite Mastodon client?

Hey everyone, super excited to be exploring the fediverse both here on kbin and elsewhere. Looking for a Mastodon client primarily for iOS, great to see the main app is open-source, but there seems to be quite a few options out there. Feel free to share non-iOS clients for others' benefit as well....

This is a microblog specific question so probably best to put it on the microblog! What do you guys think about having microblogs on the magazine-level as opposed to at the user-level? I guess my expectation was a combination of thread/Reddit-like and microblog/Mastodon-like posting here on kbin, but having blogs at the magazine-level definitely shakes that up a bit. On one hand could be an opportunity to explore a new kbin-specific feature, on the other I think there is a little bit of confusion on what mag-blogs are “for” (given they can be for whatever we as a community decide). More than anything just excited to see how it develops over time and get everyone’s ideas/input on what you think!
