I didn’t know either so I looked it up, and on day 1 of his presidency he initiated a 100-day review of the domestic terrorism threat that resulted in the first ever National Strategy for Countering Domestic Terrorism which you can read about in the White House fact sheet.

PBS also has an article which notes that it increases funding and intelligence sharing for combatting domestic terrorism.

We can talk about if these measures are effective, but short of congressional action not sure what else he could do single-handedly.

A study that, like the article notes, has increased the DOJ budget for combatting domestic terrorism by $100m and doubled the number of DOJ investigations into domestic terrorism since 2020.

Thanks for digging up the important line. So annoying to have sensationalist headlines like this that bury the lede and completely disprove their own thesis several paragraphs down, but I mean as long as it gets that initial click…

I was about to say this. Downside is you have to get a PhD first…

It makes it even worse that people clearly have no problem addressing Dr. Pepper by their proper title. You’re Dr. Root_beer in my book.

Ender's Game may fit this, but the sequel Speaker for the Dead definitely does. Not to give away too many details, but it's basically about a space anthropologist making second contact with an alien race still confined to its own planet. I'd say the first book has humans and aliens more or less at parity, but in the second the humans are more technologically advanced. Both are more meditations on otherness more than anything.

Oops, my bad I did not read carefully enough haha. Still amazing!

Different orgs use different style guides as some have already said. In almost all Black is capitalized, whereas white is rarely capitalized but you still see it occasionally.

I’m torn on white/White personally. The reason given by most is that it falls in line with white supremacist rhetoric, and generally has been capitalized exclusively in that context. Totally valid argument to not use it for that reason.

On the other hand I think leaving it lowercase risks making it an assumed default state, or makes it so that white people think of “racial” issues as something that does not include them. Plus allowing white supremacists to decide what is or isn’t whiteness and how we talk about it I think is a bad idea…

More from the AP blog here on their use of Black/white.

You could also try Startpage which is literally just Google search without tracking if SearXNG doesn’t work for you.

Sci-fi books which don't involve too much space travels and massive world builds?

Don’t really know how to explain this. I like sci fi and would love to dig deeper into it. Am avid reader and enjoyed Project Hail Mary (though set in space, this book is just amazing), Dune, short stories by Ray Bradbury and TV shows like Raised by the Wolves, Westworld, From (love From!). But e.g. Foundation I really...

Ugh just read Fifth Season and am reading Obelisk Gate now. Just SO good.

I’ll throw in Ursula K. Le Guin’s Left Hand of Darkness and The Dispossessed. Both classics that are great page turners. Take place against the backdrop of an intergalactic society but remain focused on singular planets and their societies (well if you include their anarchic moons). Great characters with meaningful relationships. Left Hand has more of an interpersonal focus, Dispossessed more societal, but both amazing in their own way.

There is a bill in the works called the CHERISH Act in Massachusetts that would allow all residents to graduate community college debt-free (note not actually free just support people enough they don’t go into debt).

Mass Reconnect (the program in the article) was created from 20 million dollars taken from the new Mass millionaires’ tax. CHERISH is estimated to cost about 500 million (a great investment but definitely a scale of magnitude larger)

I think what’s crazy about CHERISH is that it would raise state investment in each student just to the level seen in 2001. Crazy how much even states like Mass have cut education funding in the last 20 years.

Yup.

On the education side, Healey is proposing to use the surtax money to pay for $100 million in child care grants to providers, $140 million in higher education capital funding, the $20 million free community college program the governor outlined earlier Wednesday, a $93 million expansion of a state scholarship program, a $59 million effort to stabilize tuition and fees at UMass and other public higher education institutions, and more.

For sure, I think that's a good rule of thumb and lines up pretty well with "how much this OS relies on your data to make a buck."

I was reading there too that most of the privacy and security concerns in macOS are in iCloud, but with Advanced Tracking Protection you can make that E2EE now, or just go with an alternative cloud service.

I would have agreed until the hinge broke through my HP Envy x360 screen :-(

Not much of a warning before it happened either, I would look into your model to see if that’s a recurring issue. Apparently you can loosen the tension in the screw on the hinge ahead of time to help avoid it eventually snapping. Good luck either way!
