"Axe the Tax" is a political proposal.
Fair enough.
But it isn't about making life more affordable.
It's spin to conceal a "let the planet burn" climate policy."
@gemelliz that is true but it is not intentional on PP’s part. It is simply a kindergarten-level slogan that can be repeated endlessly until people believe it, just like “Unite the Right” was. I guess Fuck Trudeau didn’t have the staying power. Not enough alliteration, not that a Con could even spell alliteration.
@Lomaxcat@gemelliz It could be by design, I agree. But I just can’t credit the Cons with the intelligence to do anything by design. Three-word alliterative slogans are peak performance for them.
@bjornqc@Lomaxcat@gemelliz No no. Poilievre is not stupid. This is all intentional and cynical. He's a genuine strategist, using Trumpist anti-Clinton practices against Trudeau. He's a serious threat.
@BarryCooke@bjornqc@Lomaxcat@gemelliz I don't see any evidence that he's stupid. I see evidence that he's cynical and amoral. He's perfectly willing to say and do buffoonish things in order to get right-wing voters on side. I wouldn't say he's some kind of genius, but he is fully aware of the tactics he's employing, unlike Trump who is aware the way a bully is aware, but mostly appears to do it by instinct.
@BarryCooke@bjornqc@Lomaxcat@gemelliz Trump appeals to ignorant bigots because he is one. He relates directly. Poilievre is happy to have the bigot vote, and is himself one, I'm sure, but he's already shown us he can change his persona if there are votes in it.
@OrionKidder@bjornqc@Lomaxcat@gemelliz He's been told it's highly advantageous to be seen liking new Canadians - Asians and Indians. So he goes with it. Those photo ops will ramp up over the coming year.
@OrionKidder@bjornqc@Lomaxcat@gemelliz
Depends. All elections turn on fast-growing suburbs around TO, MTL, VAN, where growth is driven by immigration. Can he fool them? Centre-Left has 18 months to explain PP's fraudulence, and overcome incumbent fatigue.
@OrionKidder@bjornqc@Lomaxcat@gemelliz
The guy has some serious baggage pre-makeover. This is him March 2021, telling us to go have a beer and forget about covid, and public health restrictions. Then came his sorry affair with convoy.
@BarryCooke@bjornqc@Lomaxcat@gemelliz I can only hope that the Liberals are able to capitalize on his obviously fake persona enough to overcome their own shitty behaviour. If we can pull out another Liberal/NDP agreement, that's just about as good a government as we can hope for given Westminster parliamentary voting.
@BarryCooke@OrionKidder@bjornqc@Lomaxcat@gemelliz I’d bet PP will never debate. His foundation is appealing to fear ignorance & prejudice. He’ll debate only if he’s confident he can “clip” the debate to his advantage. Clip: to selectively edit out all but his simple words and slogans & offer these on his platforms of noise
@pinhman@OrionKidder@bjornqc@Lomaxcat@gemelliz Canadians will not accept a guy too afraid to participate in national televised debate. He'll have to overcome his fears and do it at least once in English, and once in French.
@BarryCooke@OrionKidder@bjornqc@Lomaxcat@gemelliz The other party leaders should go into a debate knowing Poilievre will make every effort to “clip” it. Expect the irrelevant & out of context and willfully misconstrued. Perhaps this would make every other Canadian well aware of his strategy.
@pinhman@BarryCooke@bjornqc@Lomaxcat@gemelliz It's hard to avoid giving him any ammunition and still say anything, and it would put them on the defensive. I just wish they'd go after his obviously contrived horseshit a lot harder. For every folksy "fake news" rant he goes on, show how utterly fake he is, how much his persona is a construction. Reveal him as a poser. That might make a dent, at least in undecided voters.
@OrionKidder@pinhman@bjornqc@Lomaxcat@gemelliz It's probably too early to go hard now. They are ramping it up a bit now, opposing Opposition. The decade-long campaign to manufacture Trudeau fatigue has worked. It's not like that can be overcome easily pre-writ. Scheer and O'Toole were polling well pre-writ, but then ran failed campaigns. Harper too. It's a pattern that they run weak campaigns that don't connect with swing ridings.
@BarryCooke@pinhman@bjornqc@Lomaxcat@gemelliz I really hope you're right. I hope the have their shit together enough to be planning for this intelligently. I do not care for Trudeau, but Poillievre is really frightening.
I keep hearing the “Trudeau has to go” rhetoric from many, including family/friends.
My usual starting response (sometimes I just don’t have the energy for an argument) is “and be replaced by whom?”
Trudeau has done a lot of good things, and he’s really screwed up/bungled some stuff. Go figure. He’s human. Maybe it is time for a change, but not to PP!
@QueerInTheCountry@andrewbarss@OrionKidder@pinhman@bjornqc@Lomaxcat@gemelliz 1. Not gonna happen. So make peace with NDP holding the balance of power so that Libs are held to account from the Left. 2. Changing the face of the leader doesn't change the party, the policies, or makeup of cabinet. It only changes the digital imagery you consume. So get over yourself.
@BarryCooke@QueerInTheCountry@andrewbarss@OrionKidder@bjornqc@Lomaxcat@gemelliz PP with his dependence on FIP is vulnerable to People’s party and rest of the fringe right. They can easily offer extremes without worrying about alienating the center. They have no interest in the centre. Watch Saskatchewan’s provincial election in Oct for example.
@pinhman@QueerInTheCountry@andrewbarss@OrionKidder@bjornqc@Lomaxcat@gemelliz
CPC has full enough control of PPC. I've written about it previously. PPC is the kamikaze rage wing of CPC. The arrangement between Harper and Bernier allows them to recruit white hate to the cause, while keeping it safely compartmentalized at a distance. 50% of their polling numbers goes to CPC on election day. Lilley and Furey see to that. Ask Frank Graves. He knows.
In the days leading up to election, Libs think they've survived into majority territory. Then PPC strategic vote on election day sucker punches them to minority status. Places like Bolton, Ontario, where the gravel was thrown. Or Peterborough, where Queen Romana Didulo, with her purple flags, was stirring up dissent. It's a +5% bump across the country, and even higher in suburban Ontario. Enough to turn an election.
@BarryCooke@andrewbarss@OrionKidder@bjornqc@Lomaxcat@gemelliz There are big cracks in the “united right” provincially, whether the incompetence of UCP & SK Party will impact the federal vote? Will NDP in BC & MB influence? UCP’s “majority” is less than 9000 votes across 6 ridings ... SK Party has lost every urban bye-election.
Five years after his first drunk driving arrest and three years after his second drunk driving arrest, Premier Scott Moe was involved in a third incident in 1997; an horrific crash where he hit and killed a 39 year old woman and injured her young son.
@gemelliz
Meanwhile the amount of CO2 we spew into the atmosphere is skyrocketing, accelerating terrifyingly (see the last bar on this chart—2023). And the carbon tax is such a modest, modest effort to reverse this cataclysmic trend.
