atomicpoet,

@tyler #Calckey is a fork of #Misskey. One feature of Misskey is the ability to show ads.

Unlike Misskey, Calckey gives you the ability to opt out of ads if you don't like them.

By the way, I don't know of any Calckey servers that show ads right now.

@atomicpoet @tyler So after reading this I've done a quick check for a description of ads on #Calckey/#Misskey. I've found little or nothing, undoubtedly because I don't know what I'm looking for exactly. Any pointers would be appreciated.

I imagine that many #Fediverse users would be opposed to ads, so I'm someone surprised to read of suck a capability.

Thanks for any pointers.

atomicpoet,

@waltwooton @tyler I actually just wrote a big post about that here:

@atomicpoet @tyler I quite like the option of having the functionality there. It’s not something that needs to be used for advertising for products but could be used for public service announcement style campaigns.

Things like the recent change in the UK to require ID when voting could be advertised on a UK focused server. Or a university based instance might want to warn people of disruptions on campus. Useful stuff that isn’t an announcement but people may benefit from seeing.

Spellbind0127,

@atomicpoet @tyler why would I ever join a an instance of something on the fediverse that has ads I would rather donate to keep my favorite services up and running then see ads to keep them up and running.

kainoa,

@Spellbind0127 @atomicpoet @tyler most instances (including calckey.social) don't run ads.

atomicpoet,

@Spellbind0127 @tyler That's a good question. There's quite a few high profile Fediverse servers that show ads. Some of them are based on Mastodon, and some on Misskey. Why people join, I don't know -- but they exist.

Suoko,

@atomicpoet @Spellbind0127 @tyler can you list some of those high profile instances? Id like to see how ads have been implemented

atomicpoet,

@Suoko @Spellbind0127 @tyler Most of them are NSFW, so I'm not posting them. But one prominent server that has ads is misskey.io.

  • Suoko,

    @TerryHancock @Spellbind0127 @atomicpoet @tyler it's not a question of being poor or rich, if you're used to fb or twitter you just don't care paying for a social network maybe.

  • Spellbind0127,

    @TerryHancock you see being a different mastodon instance that I don't help host would be the smart thing for me to do because i am also a broke college student. Selfhosting your own mastodon server is fun but not a good idea when your broke.

    via,

    @atomicpoet @tyler does calckey.social run ads?

    kainoa,
    via,

    @kainoa @atomicpoet @tyler it would be kinda cool if there were some "donate to calckey" banner ads or something, also would show people they can run ads on calckey

    kainoa,

    @via @atomicpoet @tyler maybe... I've also considered porting over MkDonate from Mkv13, but also letting admins add their own option to it.

    via,

    @kainoa @atomicpoet @tyler what does mkdonate do?

    kainoa,

    @via @atomicpoet @tyler it's a small popup banner that shows up when you log in, with the option to hide it forever.

    atomicpoet,

    @via @tyler Nope, no ads. I don't know one Calckey server that actively shows them.
