@mikedev as it should. Nice!

tyil,

@smallcircles I'd assume all of them, emoji are just characters in the end anyway. But the real question is, why would you want this? Its just a less accessible means of using regular words for hashtags.

Former CEO of Twitter wanted to build a social protocol no-one can control, like SMTP or HTTP for social media. Bluesky’s ATProto was supposed to be an open source protocol that Twitter could eventually utilize, but then Musk happened and Bluesky started taking it to the wrong direction and everything fell apart in Dorsey’s mind.

A very revealing interview. I now see even more future in W3C’s ActivityPub.

I'm just a user and not a developer of the various protocols, but i wonder if it was more along the lines of NNTP?

rolle,
@rolle@mementomori.social avatar

I must wonder… if Dorsey truly wants to build something open, non-commercial and decentralized, why doesn’t he even look at the ActivityPub? Why not help it thrive? What’s all that fuss about Bluesky and Nostr?

aldi80s,
@aldi80s@mastodon.social avatar

Have to say:

I like / instances: CDRom Tokyo and MiniDisc Tokyo. All because of the "retro" interface and the names.

However, what frustrates me a lot is the speed issue: cannot load the timeline, it get stuck with no updated for many days or weeks. Takes too long time to post any thing, even just plain text.

I hope it will be solved in a near future because they will be my favorite sites.

Thank you for flagging this!

demiurg,
@demiurg@fosstodon.org avatar

I have the feeling that Activity Pub and other new 'protocols' have a different meaning of the term 'protocol'. I mean these APIs and services would not be handled by the IETF. Or do I miss something?

smallcircles,
@smallcircles@social.coop avatar

@demiurg

Imho AP serves more as a kind of "protocol framework", and it still must be completed to be fully production-ready. Current early adopters are all working with alpha versions and flavours thereof.

Linux,
@Linux@sakurajima.social avatar

The reality is, you always take a chance when contributing to an open source development or projects. Just because you made a contribution, does not mean you own the project or can decide the path that project takes. Those of us who donated understood the risk (or at least, I hope most people did).

That said, when someone takes a proactive driving stance claiming they will deliver, you kind of hope you can take them for their word. And expecting the main website to be online is not a big ask, especially when that serves as a gateway for people to learn about and use the project you are funding. That, after all, was the reason I donated.

Anyone building a federated Stack Overflow?

thomasjwebb,
@thomasjwebb@mastodon.social avatar

@dansup it seems like lemmy can be that with the right skin. We also really need a federated alternative to github. Gitea is partway there but thinking also about how github is sort of a linkedin for programmers.

julian,
@julian@community.nodebb.org avatar

@benpate said in Anyone building a federated Stack Overflow?:

Personally, the "accepted answer" is the killer feature. Dunno if NodeBB, Kbin, or others already support this.

Yes! NodeBB's been around for a decade, we have tons of stuff that got built because people wanted it.

So yeah we have a plugin that already does full question-and-answer support. We use it on our forum: https://community.nodebb.org/category/16/technical-support

Note the "solved" and "unsolved" labels, and descending into a solved topic, you'l see the accepted answer floated to the top.

NodeBB's theme and plugin engine is very flexible, so it is feasible to stand up a StackOverflow clone rapidly.

I now have a "sponsor" badge. - How?

No matter, how you connect to the Fediverse, be if, for example, Misskey, Sharkey, Ice Shrimp, Mastodon, PeerTube, Pixelfed, Kbin, or by other means, the Fediverse instance you're using cost money. In the real world, web hosting, bandwidth, and storage space cost, money. And the more members who use and join your Fediverse instance (server), the more resources and the most it cost.

I earned by badge, by reaching out to my administrator, and helping them by donating. And while if it was not required to make a donation or regular contribution, I like using the Fediverse. It is ad-free and decentralized, meaning, someone like Elon Musk, cannot change things for everyone, everywhere, solely on their latest mood swing. So I made the choice to help fund my corner of the collective social media network, known as the Fediverse.

@Linux Also, that role also grant a doubled drive space (4 GB) on Misskey, as we are required to set a limit. For regular users, it’s 2GB).

The Sharkey leadership is a little incompetent. 🙄

Join Sharkey dot Org has been OFFLINE for over 2 months. The reason given was hosting issues, and this was before the whole Hetzner drama. Join Sharkey dot Org is supposed to be the gateway for people to learn about Sharkey and how they can join.

The Documentation Page (Wiki) is still up, using the subdomain, Doc dot Join Sharkey dot Org, but the URLs are broken. I have repeatedly reported the broken URLs for over 2 months (both in the Git and on their Discord Server). No one seems to want to address that.

They have a private copy of GitLab located at ActivityPub dot Software, that you cannot find via a search looking for Sharkey (DuckDuckGo, Bing, Google). That is where you can report code changes and fixes, but you would likely not know that unless you stumbled upon the URL somewhere (or someone gave you that URL).

Sharkey raised a lot of money so they can host their own content, safely, and securely. They now own their own physical server and lease the space to have that server housed (hosted) remotely. And while the lead developer promotes that server partially as a minecraft server, Join Sharkey dot Org still remains, OFFLINE.

I have pulled funding from Sharkey and will not be supporting it further until they get their act together. It is a good software, and it is my preferred method to use the Fediverse, but you would assume they would want their website working.

/cc @fediverseobserver

@liaizon

This reminds me that I once saw a low uptime percentage for one of my servers on https://instances.social although my server had an excellent uptime in reality.

Bulk measuring availability seems to be hard. I did open a trouble ticket there, and others did the same, e.g. https://github.com/TheKinrar/instances/issues/72 https://github.com/TheKinrar/instances/issues/153

Discovery of new instances was broken for a while: https://github.com/TheKinrar/instances/issues/120

Maybe @fediverseobserver has similar problems.

Happy Thursday #Fediverse

Let's all talk about our day today and what we each have planned.

I woke up with a major headache and just not feeling great at all. I took a short little nap from about 9 - 10am and feeling a bit better.

Work meeting is at 12pm and it's nothing boring or anything similar, so that should be good.

Not sure what the rest of the day holds other than just the usual work stuff.

I'm following this tutorial by @Gargron, does anybody know if this is still up to date? I can't get Mastodon to find my test-actor in search. The inbox exists and can be posted to, the actor verifyer tools tell me it that it should be valid. I can see in my logs, that the mastodon instance I am searching for is accessing my actor endpoint, but in search, it tells me nothing can be found
