Hello Fediverse. I'm posting this tonight from my federated Flipboard profile! We're now testing our #ActivityPub integration starting with my account. You can follow me here to see all the stories I'm curating about things like startups, photography and of course, the #Fediverse. Curious to hear your thoughts on how this is working. We’ll incorporate your feedback as we make more progress on federating Flipboard. Stay tuned for lots more soon.
Flipboard integration with ActivityPub in the works. This is awesome! Thank you for your groundbreaking efforts here and overall support for Mastodon and decentralized social media. You guys rock!
@mike I bloody love that you’re doing this. To the point that I have installed and am using flipboard again for the first time in years. Feels good to be back man.
@projectmoon@mike correct. Still working on being able to reply from my .com account via activitypub so I’m replying with my .social account in meantime. Should have this working very soon.
@mike@osma@mike@osma@greg are you running in aws? Can you check what IP address is being resolved? I’ll follow up in this if discover anything. There’s no enforced authentication on our webfinger endpoint.
@JsonCulverhouse@mike@mike@osma@greg
no AWS in this case - Hetzner Cloud hosted in Helsinki, and my own home connection also in Helsinki. Both resolve flipboard.com to an IPv6 address 2600:9000:2118:a00:15:d33e:2640:93a1 and TLS negotiation works fine. I'll send you the request headers for both in DM.
@jamesmarshall@mike That date is when I created my Flipboard account. It's going to be fun/interesting to see how these kinds of things translate as Flipboard becomes a proper part of the #Fediverse.
@jamesmarshall@mike I wonder if we could have another date which reflects when the profile was federated. Both dates are important. Will talk to the team about this to see what’s possible.
@evan@mike thanks for helping to make this happen through your work on #ActivityPub. This standard is well on its way to making the online world better by bringing us all back to the promise of interoperability. The implementation was a bit easier than we expected and well worth the effort. I highly recommend federation for any product with a social graph.
And thank you, Mike (and staff), for being such forward thinkers and doers. The world needs to clone more of you. Please leave a DNA sample at the door on your way out :)
@shoq That's incredibly nice of you to say, Shoq. Thanks so much. It means a lot for the team and I to hear something like that from someone like you. I love how collaborative the Fediverse is. Like we're all helping to build the same thing and figure out the same sets of problems together.
@mike This is seriously cool. Looking forward to seeing how it develops!
P.S. - Having Flipboard accounts have a red check is a cool visual marker. We may all have checkmark hangovers from the Bad Place but it I kind of like it in this case :)
@loke@mike replies really are key - ActivityPub integration without it feels incomplete.
Flipboard comments on articles always felt like they were talking to no-one, having them become conversation starters on fedi would be super interesting.

To reverse a saying I've heard around the watercooler, AP minus replies = RSS.
That said, publishing a feed that can be found and followed in a fediverse app at least allows us to follow, boost, and discuss what it publishes. I've had thoughts about some convention that tells apps whether the feed publisher receives replies or not, so it can display 'reply' if so, or 'comment' if not.
I think it's mostly a "problem" based on whatever implementation you're using. Something like Kbin correctly threads everything so there's not much confusion. Microblogging platforms implement it differently.
@wiredfire@loke@mike Totally. We are still hooking up reply functionality to the Flipboard app so I am replying from my .social account in the meantime. We will have full inbox and outbox support for activitypub when we go live.
