hello,

Do you want to help support musicians, like the ones you hear on @radiofreefedi? We are looking to increase our coverage, starting with more Mixtapes. But, we need your help!

We are looking for volunteers interested in helping us make more Mixtapes, with the ultimate goal of releasing a new one every Friday. Don't worry - we'll be using a round robin so that different people take turns.

If you'd like to help out with this, send us a message!

I feel weird about @radiofreefedi. I'm not sure how to articulate it except that it's kinda centralized and it's not primarily afaik. imo the energy should be going towards people building apps like , letting everyone share/support the work however they want and highlighting all the curators running streams/podcasts about music. grow the whole infrastructure and community.

@wjmaggos I don’t think any of this is a problem - it’s akin to a discovery index filled with accounts across the Fediverse, except it takes the form of a radio station. I listen to it when I’m driving to or from work, and it fills that niche of feeling like radio, but entirely comprised of music from this space.

With CC Music, I mean, I get it? I’ll just say that, having poured years of my life and thousands of dollars into running a CC/PD Video hub on PeerTube, almost nobody seemed to really care about creating a community around it or supporting it. I think CC is useful, but I think it’s dead as an actual cultural movement. Taking a purist stance on how people license their own work is…less than useful.

I do kind of agree with you on Funkwhale, I think they really missed an opportunity by not investing in social features early on. There is a CC Music server called Open.Audio, but if you look at it…there’s just a real lack of community. It’s more of a “music locker” where the uploaders don’t often seem to be the artists themselves.

Anyway, the point of RFF is to produce a low-friction, grassroots method of building a music community, and they’ve honestly done an amazing job. The music I’ve discovered through it is often amazing, and there’s some mad talent here.

@friendsofccmusic is trying to take up the torch again. I like the new RFF website. The community building they seem to be doing is awesome.

but CC licensing is key if we want to do this in a decentralized manner. having to ask for authorization each time we want to play a song in a podcast or stream won't create a "best stuff can go viral" environment. it will work for what RFF is doing. but I want a more open community of artists and curators.

I'm annoyingly obsessed with what could be. like the fedi and as you said, I feel like it was designed for a different audience/goal. we almost need a different server and app designed for musicians. but one that would be compatible with FW.

give artists a way to build their site ala WordPress, but also connect to everyone else to provide a decentralized Spotify. and get all musicians on the fedi.

I'd rather not dissipate resources tho.
