Because a blocked account cannot see posts by the user that blocked them, they are also not able to reply. So one user can reply to another and then block them, making it look to everyone else like the blocked account had no comeback etc. That it was such a good response, the blocked gave up and walked away. When they were actually not given a chance. Consider that when you're reading conversations here.

NOTE: you can reply to your own comment to say they did this.

It's been annoying listening to podcasters that often question media and reality make assertions that the aurora photos were fakes. Gell-Man Amnesia now makes me question them more.

While the phenomenon itself may not be completely natural (HAARP?) the manner in which it was captured is not mysterious to this photographer who has taken many a long exposure and particularly with astrophotography.

Longer exposures = more saturated colors and tones than seen by the naked eye.

@melodiousowls @fletcher

people are often shocked when somebody reports on something they know a lot about, jumping to the conclusion that they are specifically full of shit. experience that phenomenon enough and you realize that journalism is a real job and that pundits whose entire shtick is in mocking them, is a grift. calling it all a conspiracy is next level desperation. they both have their place but most of the time it's basic mistakes by good people and competing worldviews/interests.

of course you respond to a quote that so encapsulates what these podcasts have done to you, telling you there's no good media out there, by saying stop paying attention to the media. yet your OP that I am responding to is not about you visiting with neighbors or smelling the flowers, but listening to podcasts. it's like Adam using social media to announce the start of his podcast where he tells people social media is horrible.

I got blocked by a lefty earlier today for arguing that Georgia today is just like what we did to Ukraine in 2014. he realized his "Russia scary" argument wasn't going to work. the right gives up by mocking and making personal attacks. y'all suck.

The ridiculous way that Cory (@pluralistic) approaches his account name and posting his articles here is still better than the cluster that is and names, system structure and data management. IMHO!

People have email addresses like me@mydomain.com while also having a website at mydomain.com. What's preventing folks from also having a #SocialWeb account using me@mydomain.com? Would it just be confusing? Then there's all the different fedi services.

If you don't have public conversations with quality critics of your worldview, you're not better than partisan/ideological corporate media. Especially when you routinely mock the people you disagree with. You're facilitating an echo chamber. You're serving an audience junk food, scared they might abandon you if you step out of line. It makes democracy harder to sustain. You're only an alternative to the mainstream in the most superficial sense possible. It's still a grift.

wjmaggos,
@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

@Vox

it is but very few will take it that far. you can usually kindly interrogate those arguments away. when you can't, treat it like religion. accept that people hold unfounded beliefs but society must be based on data and more universal human truths, not anecdote and mythic framing of the past.

most of mainstream fedi is pretty left (still too much fedi blocking imo) and I don't know what it's like on the silos anymore. so I really can't say.

Which nations, named or considered a homeland for an ethnicity, treat people differently based on their religion or ethnicity? Cause I can go for (including maybe the Palestinian territories) being Jewish in the same way that Greece is Greek etc. You don't get special rights anywhere in Europe afaik for having the related heritage. It would probably take decades of UN forces and a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to make that work. What side does this put me on?

wjmaggos,
@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

@amerika

I'm not arguing for the unfair treatment or expulsion you want. I'm trying to find compromises that won't make anyone happy, but most people happier. You always frame these things in such a way that "your group" comes out on top, reworking "facts" as needed.

wjmaggos,
@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

@Bunnyslope @amerika

please elaborate.

wjmaggos,
@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

@amerika

it doesn't. it leads to endless conflict over whose "order" or oppression. and libertarians don't see the left as individualistic. liberalism (not progressivism) lets all groups work together as well as possible.

wjmaggos,
@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

@Bunnyslope @amerika

I'm not sure what you're arguing. people group up and give themselves special rights and it leads to conflict. the more recent history of this in Africa sucks but it's not unique or unsolvable.

wjmaggos,
@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

@Bunnyslope @amerika

gotcha. I then brought up Europe because I know countries do this but Israel clearly wants to be considered European-ish. Somehow they get to be part of the Eurovision song contest (along with Australia, while Turkey and Russia don't).

wjmaggos,
@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

@amerika

you are ridiculously selective about what things we don't find in nature that you object to. get off the computer and go live in a cave. the smallest tribe is a family. we'd have none of what we all take for granted in modern life without much more pluralism than your tribalism would allow. it's the same myopic mentality that pretends there wouldn't be horrible repercussions without government or if we let religious thinking run shit. simpleminded bs to grift, who cares who gets hurt.

Threats of violence are protected under the first amendment.

That's it. That's the message.

wjmaggos,
@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

@Dhowjen

but they are not. laws require interpretation. always have. your approach would mean there should be no recourse for people responding to being arrested with "that's not how I understand the law". you are welcome to claim this but then there's a court case. where judges and juries hear arguments, precedent, interpret the law and the situation. this is all part of living in a democracy that many conservative folks today want to redefine. it's like they only did half the homework.

wjmaggos,
@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

@Dhowjen

it has been debated. go find a relevant case and try to get the argument in from of SCOTUS.

maybe you aren't doing this but the libertarian tendency to build movements around alternative interpretations and refuse to accept the more common view to the point of armed resistance, freaks me out. it will tear the country apart.

who is they? my view is that the law is not as unpopular as we are being told here. that most Georgians don't think it will lead to massive oppression. that what you're saying is a propaganda narrative. that most people there want the law enacted for exactly the reason you are articulating, they want to know who is messing with their country, and think it's just as likely to be "the west" as Russians.
