I’m not mad at the new Apple Music Discovery station -- I'm glad it is here. But legit, isn't this a little late? Like isn't Spotify Discover like 8 years old?

steuph,

@film_girl also, I tried it and half of what it suggested me was already in my library in an iTunes Match import form so it seems oblivious of that as well. « Porcelain (2014 Remaster » is not a discovery for me, sorry. :/

iestynx,

@film_girl I’ve always found their’New music mix’ to be great at discovering new stuff. Glad that there’s something for older music now. Never used Spotify, so didn’t know what I was missing 🤷‍♂️

frede,

@film_girl It’s wild that it took me several minutes to find the Discovery station. Checked Radio, Browse, and Listen Now a few times. Finally scrolled down far enough in Listen Now to find it tucked next to my personal station.

covercash,

@film_girl the absolute best music discovery app was Songza, purchased by Google and swallowed into its belly of acquisitions, never to be heard from again :(

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@covercash loved the songza team!

covercash,
@covercash@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl non compete must have run out by now, can you please convince them to remake it and NOT sell this time? I just picked my mood or the activity I was doing and it gave me the perfect mix of new music every time.

Chancerubbage,
@Chancerubbage@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl I’m terribly concerned about the data I’ve been sending them to form a station of recommendations around . I often use Apple Music to help identify music I really don’t like, random Shazam’s, and songs I skip just because I know them already.

Kevin,
@Kevin@doyle.boston avatar

@film_girl I’m just happy they have it

nocturne1,
@nocturne1@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl I still can't believe how many clicks they hide like/dislike behind. Useless without feedback to the system.

stoneymonster,
@stoneymonster@stoney.monster avatar

@film_girl I don't even have it yet :(

DrChris,

@film_girl it’s great, but far too late. I also wish it offered playlists , and the ability to pin it to the sidebar rather than having to hunt through listen now.

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@DrChris agreed!

DrChris,

@film_girl I hope it continues to improve, but I fear this might be why it’s been introduced.

avakining,
@avakining@hachyderm.io avatar

@film_girl Isn’t that basically what iTunes Genius is/was?

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

To be clear, I'm glad Apple FINALLY has some sort of discovery system, I just think that it is insanely late and it's nuts for it to follow eight years after the incumbent service, which is less capitalized I might add, already had it and then launched a series of playlists and tweaked features around it.

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

I'm also completely unwilling to praise or applaud this new features as anything more than what it is, a follow-on nearly a decade later than the competition. Again, glad it is here. I'm actually discovering a great artist right now, but like, this is late.

jackwellborn,
@jackwellborn@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl I think you can just assume anything related to Apple Music is not applause worthy at this point. I mean, it’s so broken that the entire song menu is grayed out when you play any “_____________ & Similar Artist Station”.

ptoomey3,

@jackwellborn @film_girl The Desktop app is seemingly unsalvageable. I used the new discovery feature as an excuse to take a look at the app again. And, like every other time I do, I stumble on no less than two annoying bugs in less than 30s. There are a seeming endless number of them on desktop. Give folks a semi-stable catalyst app at the very least.

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@ptoomey3 @jackwellborn THANK YOU. I largely use my Spotify Premium account to listen to music on my Mac.

JetForMe,
@JetForMe@geekstodon.com avatar

@film_girl I’ve never really used Spotify, and I finally decided to give Music a try thanks to a 3-month promotion. But I had hoped it would’ve analyzed my vast iTMS library and curated a much better initial set of artists for me. It was so incredibly off-base with music that makes my ears bleed, reminding me of why I don’t listen to music on the radio. I’m still struggling to teach it what I like (eg there’s no way I’ve found to tell it I don’t like genres or artists, only songs).

mocasio,

@film_girl I’m finally happy to see cross-fade in iOS 17; something I have sent radars before and it’s finally happening…

maddox,
@maddox@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl I’m over here still waiting for any of these services to give me a single reason to add content to “my library” other than to find things in “Recently Added”

I just don’t understand the point, or why they won’t build features on top of the cool library we’re able to build from 40m songs.

Your iTunes movie library just called, and is wondering the same thing.

mcelhearn,
@mcelhearn@journa.host avatar

@film_girl I can’t believe how shite it is. Not one of the artists it recommends has anything to do with the music I listen to. It seems to want me to “discover“ pop music that everyone is listening to, but it is not at all tailored to my tastes.

mattdarveniza,
@mattdarveniza@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl maybe in another 10 years we’ll be able to pick up a playlist where we left off from one device to another.

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@mattdarveniza lmfao -- this is the thing I cannot believe does not work...from the company that invented HandOff

mattdarveniza,
@mattdarveniza@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl it is completely wild. It is the only thing I think handoff would genuinely be useful for and it’s the only place they haven’t done it. Massive miss.

    @jasonekratz oh, the new music list, my favorites, chill mix, friends playlist , early morning playlist and others are all algorithmic. This is just finally suggesting NEW music, a thing that feels like table stakes.

    jsit,
    @jsit@social.coop avatar

    @film_girl @jasonekratz I thought New Music Mix recommended new stuff? I’m seeing things on there that aren’t in my library, and the description is: “Discover new music from artists we think you'll like.
    Refreshed every Friday.”

    film_girl,
    @film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

    @jsit @jasonekratz it isn’t the same as a discovery playlist, it’s based on new releases and often not even current (I want all new stuff from artists I follow or like as it comes out, I don’t want stuff six weeks later), this new thing is more discovery regardless of when it came out.

    jsit,
    @jsit@social.coop avatar

    @film_girl Yes, that’s what I like about Discovery too, I think I misunderstood you earlier.

    @film_girl better late than never.

    dnwrld,
    @dnwrld@mastodon.social avatar

    @film_girl It still amazes me they added a discovery system, but there’s still not a simple + button or something to just add to your library.

    matt,
    @matt@isfeeling.social avatar

    @film_girl Maybe I'm just old, but it seemed like Apple Music discovery has been okay, even if it's not the same radio station style thing that Spotify has done. The New Music mix every Friday has always had songs from artists I might like, and a few of their curated playlists have helped me turn up a bunch of bands I'd never heard before. I feel like I find tons of new music for someone in their 30s 😂

    I'm probably the minority here, but at least they've had some discoverability, at least.

    ssklassen19,

    @matt @film_girl I agree with both. I’m glad the discovery station is finally here, and the weekly playlists have been mostly positive. But this new station has been spot on for me so far. This is the kind of discovery I’ve been wishing the weekly playlist would be instead. I don’t know if there is something different about the algorithm, but I’ve had the station playing all day and almost everything suits me.

    jon,

    @film_girl tried it twice, 90% is just songs I already know or even have in my library already. Not exactly discovery material…

    chucker,
    @chucker@norden.social avatar

    @film_girl it’s weird given that iTunes had Genius in… 2008? Maybe even before that? https://www.macrumors.com/2008/09/09/itunes-8-hd-tv-shows-grid-view-genius-playlists-nbc/

    So it sounds more like a “feature didn’t match Irvine’s vision of the product, but he’s gone now so let’s do it” thing

    film_girl,
    @film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

    @chucker Genius was sort of a revelation in its day, although it never worked as well as similar options for last.fm and others for me — but yeah, this is a space Apple has ostensibly been in for ages. Not to mention, they have listening data for many of us going back 20 years (or if not specific listening, then purchases/stuff we've added to our libraries)

    Craktok,
    @Craktok@mas.to avatar

    @film_girl I think there’s people like me who use Apple Music and never use Spotify.

    film_girl,
    @film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

    @Craktok 100% -- my point is why did it take 8 years to copy one of the best features Spotify has ever introduced?

    Craktok,
    @Craktok@mas.to avatar

    @film_girl it took a while to get a always on display on the iPhone. I don’t think Apple spend their time religiously copying their opposition.

    @film_girl @Craktok iPad Weather app has entered the chat

    mcelhearn,
    @mcelhearn@journa.host avatar

    @film_girl @Craktok Maybe because they already had the personal radio station, which includes music you listen to, music in your library, and similar artists. Remember when they called it “Personal DJ“ at launch?

    jackwellborn,
    @jackwellborn@mastodon.social avatar

    @film_girl Counterpoint: “I’m not mad at the new Apple Maps's Look Around -- I'm glad it is here. But legit, isn't this a little late? Like isn't Google Maps's Street View like 12 years old?”

    Google Street View is still better, but my thinking is that more competition is just better and that it being done already is a terrible reason not to compete on a feature.

    film_girl,
    @film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

    @jackwellborn I'm more annoyed it took 8 years for them to come up with the feature, not that it exists.

    jackwellborn,
    @jackwellborn@mastodon.social avatar

    @film_girl That's fair. Maybe they painted themselves into a marketing corner with their push for non-algorithmic curation back in the day. Anyhow, the smart bet is to listen to a good public music station, like KUTX, for discovery.

    film_girl,
    @film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

    @jackwellborn KCRW, KEXP, WXPN, WFMU, etc -- and yes, KUTX

    jackwellborn,
    @jackwellborn@mastodon.social avatar

    @film_girl And I have a shortcut that adds whatever is currently playing on KUTX to my Apple Music library. https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/7937d514bf7a4d8280062f6adbde4917

    film_girl,

    @luckie_reubs@mastodon.social avatar

    @film_girl Yeah, it’s a good idea, I think, but it has not hit for me at all. I kinda wonder if I’m doing something wrong with it?

    chadmobley,
    @chadmobley@mastodon.social avatar

    @film_girl idk, pretty sure more people who use Apple products will just grow up so much so in the ecosystem that the user base will continue to grow naturally. I can’t see any music feature at this point needing to be aggressively pushed.

    ramarope, (edited )

    @film_girl as you know non-techie Apple Music subscribers don’t spend time comparing it to Spotify, they just enjoy what the service offers.
