my friend teaches creative writing at a private school. he’s now forced to upload a calendar and a detailed syllabus with itemized evaluation points and not deviate from this at all, because the school considers this a contract with the customer (the student). absolute hell.
he’s like “this is creative writing! i’m sure this works great for some classes but not for this!” but admins have declared themselves powerless against the totalizing force of “the platform”
i’ve seen this more in Latin America for some reason. if the software doesn’t have the option to do something then the option doesn’t exist at all. bureaucracies have entirely surrendered to their software.
@lzg Had a similar problem in Alaska, too. About twenty years ago, my undergrad told me they I couldn't complete my proposed degree program because they didn't know how to enter it into their custom Oracle business logic front-end.
I can only imagine how much worse things have gotten since then.
@lzg (The trick in my case turned out to be getting it approved by someone who was retiring in a month, and who was quite happy to make it someone else's problem to solve.)
@lzg but is there an enviable side to that backwardness? it sounds like the 1990s in Europe - 28800 baud and cyberspace on CD. or is this a really new thing, rather than „finding out wrong“?
@lzg To be fair, this could be spun into a perfect writing lesson for the kids! 😂 Because when isn't there some corporate overlord with no creative background dictating form and function like an idiot?
