I'm in and the bus system here is amazing and very easy to use. This stop I was at had 37 routes. All real-time on Google maps and you can tap your credit card or phone on the bus to pay. All transit should be this easy.

@Lyle from the way my friend here describes it, it's excellent. Housing as a human right. Something like 85% of people live in govt subsidized apartments, and they're all transit oriented. We visited one residential area outside the tourist places and it seemed like a great place to live.

So many times I see developers "check the box" on and without actually doing it. This street in has wide sidewalks with greenery and public art. But there's no activation. There aren't even doors or windows at street level. Why would anyone want to spend time here? The bare minimum is not enough.

If the sidewalk looks like this, you might need to install some more bike racks, or indoor bike parking!

Wow, legislation introduced in today that would ban right turn on red in the core urban neighborhoods. This is HUGE, possibly the biggest pedestrian-friendly policy for the city in a decade. And it has the support to pass!

"Drivers of boxy SUVs and pickup trucks are more likely to kill pedestrians, study finds"

This needs to be built into NHTSA car safety ratings. It makes zero sense for these trucks and SUVs that are deadly to people walking and on bikes to get a 5-star safety ratings.

Transit has been in the plans for the from the very beginning. Now that it's funded and the rail expansion is in the engineering phase, some NIMBYs are trying to derail it. Don't let them win! If you're in Atlanta, contact the mayor, your councilperson, and MARTA to let them know you support transit expansion on the Beltline.

Today is the return of Streets Alive! See y'all on Peachtree Street.

Thoughts on bike lanes painted on sidewalks? This is in where a street with a nice bike lane is offset and needs to travel against traffic for one block. 5th and West Peachtree if you want to see on Google maps. I think it's better than nothing, but I have seen some awkward conflicts between bikes and pedestrians here.

A sidewalk where one half is painted as a green bike lane.

Enjoying my short time in Amsterdam. I wish more US cities would put in infrastructure like this. It's so simple and so effective.

Still loving these little popup bike racks that took over car parking spaces in Midtown .

It drives me nuts when new multi-use (bike/ped) paths are designed like this. Why is it curvy? People just want to and walk in a straight line. Is there some planning class teaching them to design it like this? ๐Ÿ˜‚

One thing that makes a great walking city is that there are constantly things to see and do. That may sound obvious, but too often American cities will have blank walls, parking lots, or other things that are detrimental to the pedestrian experience. That's one reason I love so much. You can wander the streets forever, finding fascinating things on each block.

A leafy residential street with a brick sidewalk.
A one story building with engaged columns and arched windows at dusk. People drinking cocktails are visible through the closest window, in the warmly lit interior.
A large house with intricately designed curving railings on both the 1st and 2nd story porches. Live oaks with spanish moss line the street.
