A good drinking game would be to bring up YouTube videos with clickbait titles and take bets on how long the video takes to actually answer the question posed by the title

ak,
@ak@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc ok but I really want to know the answer to that one first

update: it’s layering too much and getting sweaty

that was pretty close to the beginning of the video imo!

    @seachanger it seems like shipping to AK is getting more and more expensive or just plain unavailable. I have had my family ship several things to my house in the lower 48 to resend via USPS for 1/4 of the price the company was going to charge to ship direct.

    today I learned html attribute changes are case insensitive

    <some-element anoTHERname /> will trigger attribute change callback for an "anothername" attribute

    and we should always tell custom element constructors to observe small case only... i.e., the following will NOT work

    static get observedAttributes() {
     return ['anoTHERname'];
     }

    ak,
    @ak@mastodon.social avatar

    @ayo why would you prefer a dataset value in a custom element over a regular property name of your choice?

    Okay, hopefully this is the last time I'll migrate the Mastodon Streaming Server to a structured production-grade logger: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/27828

    (I've had various attempts in the past which needed to be abandoned, but hopefully this one will merge & land)

    @thisismissem would it be possible to donate via GitHub sponsors by any chance?

    @thisismissem Hm, for some reason it doesn’t show up on your profile. I just ask because I like having a central spot to manage recurring contributions. The stripe thing works though.

    Linux catch-22. In order to connect to the Internet, need to get a Wi-Fi card working. In order to get a Wi-Fi card working, need Internet to load packages to build Wi-Fi card driver. 🤔 (likely fix--mega-long Ethernet cable down the hallway and through a few rooms, temporarily).

    Highly recommend baking some quince if you can find some in your area. It’s a pear-like fruit with a complex flavor.

    ak,
    @ak@mastodon.social avatar

    Recipe:
    Peel and slice 2 quinces into 8 pieces each
    In a baking dish, add quince, 2 cups of water, 1/2 to 1 cup of sugar, 1 shot of brandy, and a dash of cinnamon and cloves. Cover with foil and bake at 350F for 1h. Uncover and bake at 400F for an additional 15 minutes. Let cool slightly and remove from pan with a spoon. Serve hot with whipped cream or ice cream.

    what git jargon do you find confusing? thinking of writing a blog post that explains some of git's weirder terminology: "detached HEAD state”, "fast-forward", "index/staging area/staged", “ahead of 'origin/main' by 1 commit”, etc

    (really only looking for terms that you personally find confusing, not terms that you think someone else might be confused about)

    The has always had "Events"; like clicks and keydowns, but you couldn't create your own at first. So did what it does and invented hundreds of ways to create custom events; bindings, , , Streams, etc.

    ReactJS "Hooks" are just another form of this; they are just callbacks that are executed at certain times in a component lifecycle.

    Thing is; we have now! It's well supported since IE11 is gone.

    @schizanon I like CustomEvents. Lit encourages the use of them.

    been thinking about this very common git workflow and how git doesn't do much to help you ensure that if you're using this workflow:

    a) you never commit to your local main branch directly
    b) you regularly pull from origin/main to keep your local main branch up to date

    you just need to be careful

    branch protection on github/gitlab helps with this, but I don't think there's much in git itself

    ak,
    @ak@mastodon.social avatar

    @b0rk instead of pull, do reset —hard origin/main when switching back to local main

There are some consequences of climate change that can no longer be avoided, no matter how much fossil fuel use falls. Substantial melting of West Antarctica up to 2100 may now be one of them." https://theconversation.com/increasing-melting-of-west-antarctic-ice-shelves-may-be-unavoidable-new-research-216030
