How much does a solar eclipse dim daylight on Mars?

The animation shows 's capture of a solar eclipse by Phobos on March 25, 2019 (Sol 2358). Phobos is small and does not fully cover the disk of the sun, so dimming is noticeable but not comparable to that of a total eclipse on Earth.

@SherlockHans This is a real photo taken by the spacecraft, the surface is odd due to the perspective and the camera distortion. You can find the original image here: https://psa.esa.int/ the file is H7982_0000_ND3.IMG and time is 2010-03-26

@owelleopard @DLR no it’s based on other images of this probe, but this is a one filter colourised image as specified

@andrealuck Have you seen there's a fresh paper focussing on dust storms? Unfortunately paywalled, but the so-called "Open Research" tab has data references that are maybe helpful for the processing you do with their stuff

@tom30519 thanks! I love seeing this potato with Mars behind… I wish there was a Phobos between my flat and the nearest city as well haha

Btw my cpu crashed several times along the way - also the original was 28k and had to reduce to 23k to upload on Flickr 😭

@andrealuck@fosstodon.org avatar

@belladavis thanks! Glad it’s your screen saver now :)

If you like Phobos with Mars behind I’ve worked on many of these images and you can find them in this album here: https://flic.kr/s/aHBqjAvrQL
