Hey did you know I have a newsletter? I DO! It comes out once a week, it's free, and it's my most provocative thoughts on pop culture, SFF, queer stuff, or my own life experience. Topics have included , writing, internalized transphobia, and the truth about "cancel culture". I would consider it a personal kindness if you would subscribe!

"There's no way that you can talk back to a gun. The gun doesn't have an opinion, it's just trying to hurt you."

In my latest newsletter I talk to @annaleen about their new book, STORIES ARE WEAPONS, and how to protect ourselves about psychological warfare. This is such a necessary conversation right now!

Mirror universe sex tourism must be a huge problem in the Star Trek universe. Literally everyone wants to spend their weekends hooking up with the evil versions of themselves.

I was utterly heartbroken when Folio Books closed. It was a wonderful store that foregrounded SFF and romance, and punched way above its weight class. Irreplaceable. Or so I thought!

Now some of the former owners are starting over in the same space. Please support them if you can!

We love to believe in meritocracy, because it feels comforting to think the world is fair and talent/dedication are rewarded. But three recent science fiction stories do a wonderful job of exploring the wishful thinking behind this idea.

Why are there no surveillance cameras in the show Severance? A lot of science fiction just leaves out the notion of surveillance, and it's weird — especially now that we live in a world where we're always being watched in real life.

Lately I've noticed a LOT of science fiction books that take place in a post-climate change future where a lucky few live in luxury and everyone else lives in the dirt. I've also noticed a lot of fantasy novels that lean into cozy sweetness. Five new books illustrate this perfectly!

I just wrote "she desperated" as a verb.

People will probably get mad. I do not care. It's fewer words than "she was desperate" and feels more active. I might use it again in future. 😛

I think it was a bold choice for the new planet of the apes movie to feature nothing but bees flying around, because apes is Latin for bees.

Clever way to tie in with all the recent Bee Movie discourse too

King Lear had a happy ending. The Tempest's Caliban got a Lady Caliban. Romeo was sometimes a girl. From the 1660s until the early 19th century, performances of Shakespeare's plays took a lot of liberties... and this helped make Shakespeare the icon he is today.

They're trying to sneak the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) into must-pass legislation because they know it's a terrible bill that will censor the internet and silence LGBTQIA+ people. I know we're all tired, but please call your reps again and ask them to put a stop to this terrible bill!

As a journalist, if I wrote a piece about a marginalized community that I don't belong to, in which I suggested that I know what's best for that community, and some members of that community reached out with corrections... I wouldn't automatically rule out the possibility that I'd made some mistakes

Audiobooks don't count as reading. Neither do e-books. Or printed books.

You haven't really read a book unless it was tattooed on the entrails of a one-eyed goat under the full moon during the winter solstice. While wearing a piece of rutabaga on your head.
