Eric Stoddard the founder of is using Gravity Sketch to do a live trace of a Tesla Model 3, and then export to for a CAS model he working on to boost his Class A surfacing skills. AR is a great way to quickly capture a digital representation of a real vehicle or clay model. but I think soon AI will replace that. Personally I see many problem but is the show for customers.

@pafurijaz That is really damned cool. Mobile geometry capture is a challenge in my industry. It would make our equipment programming way easier when we don’t get customer drawings ahead of time. Unfortunately, we work in very dirty environments. It can fool cameras, which makes the data unreliable. Such a bummer to not be able to use something so useful.

Are there any @FreeCAD gurus around here ?
I'm looking for advice/help on how to apply a subtractive pipe to create a groove in a (weirdly) curved surface.
The surface is green in the pictures below.

This is a support for an electronic device and I'm trying to "hide" the power cable by "clipping it" in one of the 3 legs.

Happy to share a FCStd file if needed.

@scollado @FreeCAD How did those slots get in there in the first place? It seems to me like you could modify the sketch of the cross section to include the channel you want? Even modifying the sketch that produces the “positive” portions would yield the groove you want.

There’s nothing quite like getting home from a bike ride and walking in the door just as the sky opens up with rain. Especially when you spent the last 20 minutes in the red trying to outrun those threatening clouds.

    This apparently touched a nerve; I had no idea. Check the comment thread.

    My own major gripe with passkeys is that I could never find a simple straightforward explanation of what they were and how they were to be used. I have a decent understanding of asymmetric crypto and PKI and key exchange and JWT and so on, so if you can’t explain it to me, you have a big problem.

    @timbray This has definitely been my experience. I’ve never seen a straightforward explanation of why I should switch and/or how.

    If you've gone from a 5-day work week to a 4-day work week I'd like to hear of your experience as I'm considering the same.

    Did you have take a pay cut?
    Do you work 5 days over 4?

    How has it benefitted you?
    How has it benefitted your employer?

    (please boost)

    chrishuck,
    @chrishuck@fosstodon.org avatar

    @dcbuchan Every time I hear people talk about wanting to switch to a 4-day work week, they never specify whether it’s still a 40-hour week. Personally, I prefer 5x8-hr days because it affords me the ability to get in workouts after work every day of the work week. If I worked 4x10, I wouldn’t have time and both my physical and mental health would suffer.

    I wouldn’t mind working 4x8 if the reduced salary was still enough to pay my bills.

    Actually worked on this crane in the beginning of my career. Wasn't under Mammoet then but ALE. I didn't find the mechanical design all that interesting since you don't see size on your computer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1Oq3nWkTtY

    @MisterMaker That is badass!! The biggest crane test load I ever designed was 438 tons.

    I don't know why component manufacturers even bother publishing catalogs on their websites because they almost never have the parts in inventory.

    "Oh, our hydraulic actuator meets all of the requirements of your project? You can have it in 15 months."

    I feel like I could design my own and spin up a manufacturing line for it in less time.

    chrishuck, (edited )
    @chrishuck@fosstodon.org avatar

    @bmaxv Probably not. But, that’s not the point. I’m sure there are tons of manufacturers and distributors that complain about places like McMaster-Carr. The reason people buy from them is because they have inventory and you can easily see if it’s in stock. Sure, you might pay a little more, but they actually have it when you need it. Availability drives more of my buying decisions than cost.

    chrishuck,
    @chrishuck@fosstodon.org avatar

    @bmaxv My biggest gripe with modern business is nobody having anything in inventory. It’s all “Just in time” delivery. They all think every company is a John Deere or CAT that buys things by the thousands and plans a year’s worth of production. I’d wager more customers have the one-off demand. If a supplier tells me they don’t have what I need in stock, I generally move on right away.

    Continuing my of the logos of my favorite teams, the next installment is the Rubber Ducks minor league baseball team. When I bought the hat last year, I knew I needed to do something with the logo because it really pops.

    I fired up to make a SVG and to make the model from that SVG. It took a little planning on the heights for the different colors since I only have one extruder. Turned out great!

    @thelinuxcast As a longtime user of Ubuntu, I really have no complaints. I can do CAD to code and everything in between. The people that I see complaining about Ubuntu are doing things with computers that most people are not. I can understand not using it if you’re a gamer or in some development environments. However, for the average user, it’s a good OS that runs well on old hardware.
