I just heard mindfulness defined as allowing ourselves to deeply feel what we are feeling but not to overidentify with it and I'm going to be thinking about that all day long.

I think the essence of Bill Walton was easy to understand: when you love something, love it with all your heart and passion, without reservation or worrying what anyone else thinks. I think he got everything out of his life that he could, left nothing on the table. To me that's a life well lived

@mrcompletely That's the whole game right there. Beautifully said.

While I def agree with the takes in the Deadcast that the pre-Fire versions of Scarlet Begonias from 1974 and 1976 are fantastic, I have two additional notes:

After that era the solo section within Scarlet was sometimes pushed to new heights, with surging, thrilling peaks (like Estimated Prophet in the same time frame).

The version right after the debut of Fire is, inexplicably, another standalone Scarlet, and it has one of the finest outro jams of all:

Tight game but being played on the Pacers' terms. If the Celtics actually had a coach he'd be mad about that. Too bad

The elite defense that Kyrie plays with when he gives a shit is a total indictment of the defense he plays with the other 97% of the time.

still wild to think that Col Bruce went out the way he did. only he could have pulled off the actual musician-dying-on-stage thing without anyone seeing it as anything but the culmination of everything the man was

drewphish,
@drewphish@shakedown.social avatar

@LostReflector Fishman told me an amazing story about that night. He was on that gig and the stage had enough people on it that he didn't even see it happen, just saw people reacting once the band figured it out. Col. Bruce was rushed to the hospital and in the meantime everyone was hanging out backstage. When word came that he had diedc Fishman and Bruce's brother both immediately responded with a "Holy shit that's awesome!" reaction because they instantly knew that he went out exactly...

drewphish,
@drewphish@shakedown.social avatar

@LostReflector ...how he would have wanted to - rocking TF out surrounded by friends. But the entire rest of the room was in stunned silence and looked at the two of them like they were aliens. Fishman said he quickly went up to Bruce's brother and said "That's exactly how he would have wanted to go!" and his brother said "Hell yeah it is" and Fishman laughed so hard at everyone else's reaction to the 2-person celebration that he almost fell over. A classic Fishman tale!

Went to bed with about 8 minutes left in the Lakers/Nuggets game and stayed dark until I could watch the ending. Holy shit.

My day beginning with an absolutely soul crushing Lakers defeat has me floating.

Thinking about bands that could fill the Sphere AND use it to its full potential, and I keep coming back to Tool being #1 on my wishlist.

@mrcompletely @chopaganda I would love to see the Chicago Symphony or Berlin Philharmonic mic'd up and playing a Mahler symphony in there. The possibilities would be insane.

If you're looking for blistering technique and power combined with sweeping phrasing and effortless melodic improvisation, it is hard to beat a 1997 Taste.

Literally any Taste from that year will deliver all of that.

Here's one that doesn't particularly stand out for 1997 and yet the crowd gives a well-deserved 45-second ovation after it. And it was only the 4th song of the night.

Find me another band that can do this and I'll follow them around the country.

here's one for the hipsters out there:

Some things are massively popular because they are in fact fucking awesome, and acting like you're too cool for that is just putting on :sadclown: makeup

drewphish,
@drewphish@shakedown.social avatar

@mrcompletely If disliking things primarily (exclusively?) because they are popular is one of your primary personality traits then there is a 100% chance we aren't friends

Lots of golf courses should be taken via eminent domain and turned into public outdoor spaces to be enjoyed by everyone rather than by at most a few hundred privileged people per day. Especially those near urban centers.

Sometimes it blows my mind that more of Twitter didn't end up here. The discussion of the music here on Mastodon is really fantastic. It is nuanced and people disagree in a civil way that moves the conversation forward. And there are no clout-seeking blowhards posting 200+ times a day.

But then I remember that the percentage of people posting in the way I just described, about the actual music, was always incredibly low, even in the heyday.

And then I'm not confused anymore. 🤷

drewphish,
@drewphish@shakedown.social avatar

@mrcompletely Spot on observation. Not just the filtering them out part but the everyone upping their game part. I hadn't framed it this way but you are so right. And it's not like everything here has weight and substance. That would suck. It's just that there aren't the people feeding the rage machine in the same ways. And then there isn't the algorithm feeding the people feeding the rage machine. It's like all the assholes left a party at once (even though I know we're the ones who left!)

Got Pearl Jam tickets today through the Ten Club for the Baltimore show in September!

Don't know the exact seats yet but there are two tiers of tickets (not including the pit because I'm too old for that shit) and they are in the better of the tiers.

I am very, very excited, even if it cost me $200 for the ticket.

drewphish,
@drewphish@shakedown.social avatar

@mrcompletely Ah didn't realize that's only for the fan club seats. That's a bummer. Such a great system. Even that would be a huge improvement for Phish. It is so frustrating that they do literally nothing. Grrrrrr

drewphish,
@drewphish@shakedown.social avatar

@mrcompletely There are other non-fan club presales. Must be from those. Fucking scalpers, man

drewphish,
@drewphish@shakedown.social avatar

@mrcompletely My god the seats on StubHub for that Baltimore show start at $650 FFS
