I would love to hear about how bad the pollen is, along with the implicit understanding that I am not allowed to suggest an innovative tool that would make an immediate difference with no side effects (a fucking N95)

"On 24 April, the USDA mandated testing of lactating dairy cows prior to their movement between states, and reporting of positive influenza A test results in livestock."

This is why I'm going so hard on #FluIsAirborne. When the air is left out of the conversation, nothing gets done to stop non-lactating cows -- you know, the ones that still have lungs, and can breathe -- from continuing to spread airborne #H5N1

This is just #PublicHealth theater (again)

The evidence that covid can dysregulate the immune system is — at this point — extensive, though not well-publicized. A close eye on covid-related subreddits will reveal — with surprising frequency — posts asking about, or describing, anecdotal experiences with this. Here are over a dozen:

Cardiac complications in adults and children? Embolisms? ADHD-like symptoms? Neurological issues? How many people are suffering the long-term sequelae of COVID-19 infection but not drawing the causal link and instead ascribing their new conditions to bad luck or aging?"

You think it makes me happy to have to tell you vaccines aren't enough? That air purifiers aren't enough? That there are situations where we have to filter each breath we take, because we let a stealth predator like SARSCoV2 loose? One that prefers to maim instead of kill, though kill it still does? I am not having fun, here. I derive no glee from this. This isn't my idea of a good time. This is 24/7 Cassandra syndrome -- truth exemplifying how much stranger it is than fiction

It's not about living in fear. It's about adapting to the actual reality. I experience less fear when I go out in a respirator because of what I understand about . The pre-2019 world is not coming back, and we either process that, grieve it, and adapt, or slowly succumb to a virus far more dangerous than we have been led to believe. It doesn't matter what you think of me. It matters what you think of that. I am just a messenger (like messenger RNA, you know?)

I admire whoever does what they can to avoid spreading SARSCoV2 to others, but I would very much not underestimate the damage can do to healthy immune systems and every organ system in the body. It should be emphasized relentlessly that this is an immunodysregulating virus by nature -- the science on that is crystal clear by this point, it's just not publicized. Consenting to that damage is between you and god. I would prefer a normal lifespan, myself

A shitty part of an otherwise great article:

"People who misunderstood airborne spread needlessly wore masks on outdoor walks and veered off sidewalks to avoid their neighbors."

  1. people have closed face-to-face distance on me incredibly fast, and I was caught scrambling to put on a mask, when I could otherwise have already been wearing one
  2. motherfucking is a thing

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/a-fight-about-viruses-in-the-air-is-finally-over-now-its-time-for-healthy/

currentbias, to random
@currentbias@open-source-eschaton.net avatar

The sheer amount of people who stopped wearing masks as soon as they were optional demonstrates how many people never understood why they were wearing them in the first place, which is a tremendous and ongoing failure of institutional public health

currentbias,
@currentbias@open-source-eschaton.net avatar

@MobileOak

Without a sterilizing vaccine? Absolutely. Unless you think the health consequences of endless infection are worth it. And even then, it's not a decision you're making for yourself, it's a decision you're making for everyone you share air with. Air purification and ventilation are great for long-range aerosols, but as long as people are gathering close-quarters and launching aerosols directly at each other's faces, respirators are how we adapt to the world as it now actually is

currentbias,
@currentbias@open-source-eschaton.net avatar

@mcmullin @MobileOak

Plus, what people don't seem to understand is that if everyone wore a mask when cases were low(er), then cases would stay low. Only wearing a mask when cases are surging is exactly how they surge in the first place. Also, hospitalizations are a lagging indicator. If someone is using the amount of people in the hospital as an indicator of when to mask up, it's already too late/all over their community

currentbias, to random
@currentbias@open-source-eschaton.net avatar

Good job, everyone -- western societies are clearly incapable of thinking about the heinous shit we spread to each other through the air, and people like me are going to have to repeat ourselves for the rest of our lives, countering decades of public health propaganda

currentbias,
@currentbias@open-source-eschaton.net avatar

I am proud of the mask turnout at the protests, but we need a system that protects people in jails and prisons from exposure to this shit, because cops are gleefully ripping those masks off people during arrests. And in a fascist police state, we will never have that system, because exposure is part of the punishment

Sometimes people talk like it's obvious to everyone that the is airborne, but I have never seen -- in a pretty liberal area of the US -- a doctor in a respirator mask during flu season in my life (and I'm 32)

A 2013 study using non-respirator surgical masks -- so this is undoubtedly an underestimate -- still concluded that half out of 782 A transmissions in Hong Kong and Bangkok households happened this way:

A significant amount of us seem unwilling to filter our air if it means filtering ourselves out of certain social access, even if that access is the fleeting perception of a stranger at a grocery store

3 things to remember:

  1. it only takes 5 amino acid substitutions to produce an H5N1 that is mammal-to-mammal airborne

  2. it took the WHO 2 years to admit SARSCoV2 was airborne, and 4 years to integrate that admission into public guidance

  3. influenza viruses evolved to spread through the air, and airborne pathogens make the best superspreaders, no matter how much RNA they find in milk

Finding RNA in milk is not the same as finding viable, culture-able virus in milk. Viral RNA can be found all over the place, but culturing it is more difficult, and that's where epidemiology gets tricky and pathology needs to be excessively clarified. Blanket precaution as a layperson is one thing, but scientific statements are another

If we want to speak of what is possible, we cannot simply ignore existing science that flu is airborne
