USDM Climate Clip 6-6-24

Following a stormy pattern with frequent periods of heavy precipitation and severe weather outbreaks, major drought improvement occurred this spring across the Great Plains and Mississippi Valley. Heavy precipitation from May 28 to June 3 resulted in additional improvements to parts of the central and southern Great Plains.

Improvements occurred in parts of the Midwest, High Plains and Pacific Northwest, plus Hawaii. Degradations occurred in Maine, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Illinois and Missouri, with mixed conditions elsewhere.

US Drought Monitor 6-6-24

For the 50 states and Puerto Rico, the US Drought Monitor shows 10.15% in moderate drought or worse, compared to 10.50% last week.

Conditions improved in south-central and northern areas of Kansas this week, while both extreme and severe drought expanded slightly in parts of western Kansas.

The state’s vacillating drought conditions over the past few weeks have affected some winter wheat crops. This week’s USDA Crop Progress report rated Kansas’ winter wheat condition at 11% very poor, 21% poor, 36% fair, 29% good and 3% excellent.

USDM Climate Clip May 23, 2024

The total percentage of drought coverage across the U.S. is at its lowest since March 2020. This U.S. Drought Monitor week saw widespread improvement in drought-related conditions on the map across areas of the South, the Plains, the Midwest, the Mid-Atlantic, and the West.

For the 50 states and Puerto Rico, the US Drought Monitor shows 14.23% in moderate drought or worse, compared to 15.14% last week.

This year so far has brought a reprieve from drought in many areas. Most notably, five-category improvements occurred in Louisiana northeast into central Tennessee. Despite these improvements, Louisiana recorded 36 drought impacts—second only to Texas for first-quarter impacts.
