Dear neighborhood community leader,
You're a very nice guy, but is the leafblower on a Sunday afternoon, really that necessary? Or a leafblower at all? These dead leaves belong to the ground where they fell (and their goal is to fertilize it) not in an incinerator.

So oral exam at end of PhD. Good idea or just a tradition that doesn't make any sense any more? What are the good things about them? If we didn't do them, how else could we get those good things?

elduvelle,
@elduvelle@neuromatch.social avatar

@lana @neuralreckoning 👆This! And also pretty much the first time (possibly only, if people move on from academia) when you can gather some specialists to talk about topics that interest you and who also consider you an expert. So closure, recognition, exchange of ideas. (At least that’s what it is in France, I heard the UK one was more like an exam and is not public, that’s probably not as nice to experience)

    @keithwilson we are running the “glitch” branch which has some extra perks (like markdown formatting, I don’t remember the other ones) and we also have search and hashtag follow. I have to say the search has its limits but I don’t think that’s specific to our server.
    Our admins are also working on getting fetch all replies to work. They’re very, very nice :)

    Call for paper contributions! Donate your preprint/ paper/ repository to the Neuroscience Reprohack on 7 and 8 May in Amsterdam.
    Authors will get a free reproducibility check and feedback on their efforts. Participants will get to learn from your work and hands-on experience with reviewing other peoples' code.
    Check https://www.reprohack.org/event/29/ for more event details and how to submit your work

    elduvelle,

    @danielagawehns a free reproducibility check? Is that just the figure-making code or will someone actually (try to) redo the experiment?

    the only valid reasons I can think of to discard old neuroscience papers are:

    • the experimental techniques used cause artefacts that undermine the scientific conclusions
    • field knowledge has moved on to the point that assumptions made in study are no longer valid

    otherwise, fair game.

    imo many or maybe most older studies don't fall victim to either of these two problems, so can contain valuable data, conclusions, or ideas.

    elduvelle,
    @elduvelle@neuromatch.social avatar

    @cian yeah, age on its own is not a reason to see a paper any differently from any other paper…
