After signing up for AT&T Fiber and switching between it and Comcast’s Xfinity service for a month, I canceled the latter today. A notice that I was about to be billed $96 - $30 more than my promotional amount, which expired earlier this month - made me swing into action. I paid that once to do a comparative review, but time’s up, and AT&T won. (1/3)

@dsilverman I'd like to be able to switch, because right now Comcast can't compete with symmetrical internet speeds with AT&T, but AT&T fiber isn't in my area. It's available around me, but no in my neighborhood.

Plus, AT&T is cheaper than Comcast, I'd probably even go down in speed to save a bit of money. What you're paying or internet is half of my current Comcast bill, because I'm being forced to pay for unlimited data.

I tried to search through my old posts for how I format YouTube embeds for my blog, and it returned 0 results in Spotlight... which was weird. The top of the column view showed the files were online... but that's because's sorted by date modified, and everything below the fold was removed from disk by Dropbox+File Provider, and Spotlight doesn't keep an index of offline files, or warn you that it can't check offline files. It took longer to figure that out than it took to download the files.

Enjoying a rewatch of "The Newsroom" (TV 2012-2014), but holy hell I forgot how terrible the HBO Max player actually is. I assume the devs don't get a subscription included with their employment, because no engineer would put up with this in their own product.

I am really curious how other libraries/universities/those that build educational websites are handling the increased scraping traffic from bots to train language models.

Our use is WAY up. It hasn't affected our server too much yet (because we overspec'd them to begin with) but if we were paying for bandwidth we'd really be hurting right now.

Feeling pretty glad I didn't move things to "the cloud" as suggested instead of keeping our own servers where we have access to 'unlimited' bandwidth (for now!)

@nirak @dsalo we’ve looked at moving to the cloud, but the economics just aren’t there for it yet. We have our own IP addresses and infrastructure, so it doesn’t make sense for us to move. We’d still need the bandwidth, which we don’t pay for (thankfully)

Apple introduced API that enables recording audio from other apps or the entire system in macOS 14.4, but it's poorly documented and there's no sample code available, so I decided to fix that: https://github.com/insidegui/AudioCap

@macstories When trying to click on the article titled “The iPad Pro 2024 Manifesto” from the MacStories site, it gives a 404 error. I presume this is because the link has an extra closing parenthesis, whereas the link in the first line does work and doesn’t have the extra parenthesis.
