I am re-reading Dune. This quote by the Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam is remarkable:

“Once, men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.”

It's not about a Terminator-style AI-apocalypse where the machines want to kill us all dead. It's just an accurate prediction of what actually appears to be happening.

Well, Google, ya gone and done it.

I just uninstalled Chrome, and installed Firefox. The last two days, YouTube turned to shit on me - won't load videos, is clearly heavily throttled. I switch to Firefox - YouTube works perfectly.

If you've been putting off abandoning Chrome, it's a LOT easier than I expected. Firefox imported my history, my logins/passwords, bookmarks, and so on. Completely painless. Chrome has become thoroughly enshittified. Leave it behind.

@oldladyplays people leaving Chrome to get YouTube to work actually wasn't on my bingo card.

Cory Doctorow @pluralistic : Companies like Tesla, Amazon and Cruise that claim to have replaced human workers with AI are often outright lying. Often, they’re instead replacing local employees with remote workers paid peanuts in India and other developing countries.

“So much AI turns out to be low-waged people in a call center in the Global South pretending to be robots that Indian techies have a joke about it: ‘AI stands for “absent Indian.”’”

hllizi,
@hllizi@hespere.de avatar

@mitchw @pluralistic If you call it AI you won't have to explain why remote work from India is OK while people at home urgently need to return to their offices. It's very clever.

So, Microsoft is silently installing Copilot onto Windows Server 2022 systems and this is a disaster.

How can you push a tool that siphons data to a third party onto a security-critical system?

What privileges does it have upon install? Who thought this is a good idea? And most importantly, who needs this?

@pebo @schenklklopfer @sos Could as well have stopped after "Windows".

I think a simple change in nomenclature could help Mastodon incredibly. Servers is an inaccurate term and instance is unfamiliar and vague. Both create tension for new users.
Why not simply call Mastodon instances what they are: Communities.
Ask users which Mastodon community they'd like to join. Have community rules, community policy, and community leaders. Not server rules, instance moderators and administrators.

Let me start. Everyone is welcome at our community, https://thecanadian.social

hllizi,
@hllizi@hespere.de avatar

@mike as an emotionless nerd who only knows truth conditions and does not care for connotations, I approve. All words are created equal, so why should I be bothered.

hllizi,
@hllizi@hespere.de avatar

@Gargron @mike I agree that community certainly won't always be the best fit in each single case, huge instances like mastodon.social certainly, won't have much community feeling left (no offence). But it might still be a better fit in most cases. Regarding the experiences in the past, I assume they predate mass adoption, and mass adoption may well have stacked the cards quite differently. Have you considered this?

Do you have a blog at Wordpress.com? Congrats! You will soon be feeding all your content to an AI, unless you opt-out. Same with Tumblr! (Why I self-host, reason ) Source: https://www.404media.co/tumblr-and-wordpress-to-sell-users-data-to-train-ai-tools/ and many more

UPDATE: Seems it already happened. Content from 2014-2023 has already been shared. So your opt-out will just be honoured going forward. If and how already sent content will be handled by the receiving 3rd party after you opt-out remains a mystery

  • Let's write a web browser.
  • In order to write a web browser, we'll first need to write a programming language to write the web browser in.
  • We started writing a programming language for web browsers, but our programming language turned out to be so good at writing operating systems that now we're rewriting the Linux kernel in it, and that's taking up enough time we had to put the web browser on hold

Hold on is Rust just the grandest exercise in yak shaving ever committed

Recently @pluralistic pointed out again how the "tragedy of the commons" was originally a lie invented to have a pretense to take things away from people.

It's particularly enfuriatingly ridiculous that - you can bet on it - the people who will sell you this argument are also those who will tell you to prevent the climate catastrophe by uploading fewer pictures and farting less.

But this is where the tradegy of the commons does apply, for real.

Was schon immer ziemlicher Unsinn war.
