So much commentary about the war on Gaza seems uncurious or fatalistic about what the future holds. But there's no great mystery: Palestine needs a ceasefire, fresh elections, and a path to statehood. https://www.bugeyedandshameless.com/p/gaza-and-the-day-after

Three years ago, Justin Trudeau promised to ban the Royal Canadian Mounted Police from using three controversial, risky, tactics.

But then the RCMP say they didn't want to, so Trudeau gave up. thestar.com/opinion/contributors/i-asked-justin-trudeaus-liberals-why-they-broke-a-promise-to-ban-three-controversial-police/article_72a61ab8-1f59-11ef-823e-cbe4f1fc720d.html

I went to Lithuania to catch up with the activists still trying to replace Putin. https://foreignpolicy.com/2024/05/29/putin-dissidents-attacks-volkov/

@RoyBrander So, yeah, co-signed. Schools should be quick and nimble to try and demystify and explain aspects of modern life which could be harmful.

But I confess I'm really skeptical it would do much good. I think, just by definition, the lessons are going to be out-of-date before they ever hit the classroom. But hey, that's not a reason not to do it. (And I think, to some degree, this IS being done.)

It would be wrong to use them, of course.

You've done good Convoy coverage - but has it ever been released, exactly how much bank-account-locking was done?

  • How many for more than 3 days?

  • How many lost access to not just small-biz account but personal, grocery account?

Pat King trial has me wondering, don't know those numbers, just that THEY thought it horrendous.

A story comparing olden-days, Occupy, and encampment arrests to the bank accounts frozen, (and the one cracked collarbone) would be a dramatic contrast..

justinling,
@justinling@mastodon.online avatar

@RoyBrander The Rouleau Commission report gets into some of the nitty gritty of that on page 387: https://publicorderemergencycommission.ca/files/documents/Final-Report/Vol-2-Report-of-the-Public-Inquiry-into-the-2022-Public-Order-Emergency.pdf

And we know that all of the accounts, except those subject to court proceedings, were unfrozen between Feb 21 and Feb 24.

I do think that some accounts went wonky after being unfrozen, but I think that was largely result of the banks and credit agencies not having good processes for this sort of thing.

Made the mistake of clicking on an X link, got an ad from the Epoch Times (sigh) saying Tucker Carlson (BIG SIGH) is warning Canadians about the DESTRUCTION OF THEIR CULTURE.

A) fuck off, Americans
B) stop trying to get me to like the Liberals
C) seriously stop

...you mentioned chanting support for Ho Chi Minh in 1968 as something that might shock modern sensibility, since he was a repressive autocrat when in power.

Thing is, he didn't strike Boomers as worse than the ones our nations supported, like Marcos or Pinochet.

If your only choice is between autocrats, I'm back to picking the "power-to-the-people" ones, not the "400 families" autocrats.

@RoyBrander Aha, if I even tried unpacking the particularities of which brutal despots became American allies and which became cartoonish villains in the U.S. mass media, I would have had no chance of making word count.

I listened to Short Cuts last night. It was pretty interesting and I hope some of the people involved in the movement, especially at , give it a listen

I am a bit disappointed that Jesse's guest @justinling didn't plug his Mastodon account? I've bothered Goldsbie on here before about why the journos all chose Bluesky and I half-suspect Jesse Brown decided his newsroom is going to double doen on his bad pro-Twitter, anti-Mastodon take from late 2022. Maybe that's tinfoil hat of me but it's perplexing when Justin actually has an account that he seemingly still uses!

@nauss hi! While I still try to use my Mastodon account, I'm definitely more active on Bluesky. I think it'd got a better conversation going on, amongst journalists/researchers/academics/etc. I still like Mastodon but it'd definitely my secondary account.

I'm hoping federation brings them together!

@CedarTea Oh totally. Same thing with where I grew up: Post-industrial coal city. We were super used to apartment blocks down the street, or row houses, etc. People didn't balk at the idea of making room for people to live.

It's the people who specifically fled the city and think they have a veto over who lives near them.

@mpjgregoire My view is 'yes,' but it's been so hobbled by other participants in the market β€” Ontario and others joining then leaving, other places promising to join who bail, California's messy management β€” that I don't know that we can say anything terribly conclusive.
