I listened to #Canadaland Short Cuts last night. It was pretty interesting and I hope some of the people involved in the #FreePalestine movement, especially at #McGill, give it a listen
I am a bit disappointed that Jesse's guest @justinling didn't plug his Mastodon account? I've bothered Goldsbie on here before about why the journos all chose Bluesky and I half-suspect Jesse Brown decided his newsroom is going to double doen on his bad pro-Twitter, anti-Mastodon take from late 2022. Maybe that's tinfoil hat of me but it's perplexing when Justin actually has an account that he seemingly still uses!
I was thinking of signing on as a #Canadaland supporter again. Just listened to #JesseBrown's interview with #MargaretAtwood, and now I'm reconsidering. To let her dismiss trans & non-binary people as just an infantile phase without any challenge was very disappointing.
My social streams are unspeakably depressing anymore. Half my Jews have gone batshit nationalist, and half my social justice feeds have gone full unironically-echoing-Nazi-talking-points
@avdi Jesse Brown over at #CanadaLand just did an audio essay about basically this. He said Jews learn to “speak antisemitism,” for obvious reasons. Meaning, you all understand it better than half the people who are constructing these pro-palestine messages. Us gentiles need to he a lot more careful about how we support Palestinians, or else we are going to do exactly what you describe, reach for antisemitic tools.
This excellent #Canadaland episode from 2021 is highly relevant this week and has very thoughtful contributions on the ethics and responsibility of storytelling from Alethea Arnaquq-Baril and Steven Lonsdale (with Ryan McMahon and Jesse Brown).
Johnathon Goldsbie interviews Pacinthe Mattar on #Gaza, #media self censorship and also covers the RCMP’s response to photojournalist Amber Bracken’s wrongful-arrest lawsuit #Genocide#Apartheid#LandBack#CANADALAND
CANADALAND: (Short Cuts) Stumbling Through the Fog of War
As mentioned on Canadaland today, with Metroland filing for bankruptcy, laying off 600 people, & saying 70 of 76 local newspapers will only publish online now, it is unlikely “publishing online” means quality local journalism
Now our only hope is independents like Village Media, but they have frozen their expansion at 25 community news websites due to Facebook blocking news in retaliation to Bill C-18
Does anybody know of an independent media outlet like 404 Media that does #cdnpoli and/or #onpoli reporting? I'm interested in supporting & reading top notch journalism away from corporate interests.
@veecorreia I would say #Canadaland, it is primarily podcasting over written articles, but they have really solid reporting & I support them monthly as they are independent & subscriber-supported
And a must listen, Commons, covers different institutions of power in Canada each season like Monopolies, Police, Real Estate, etc. https://www.canadaland.com/shows/commons/
Hearing Cory Doctorow ( @pluralistic ) speak reminds me that Canada is full of smart people & has so much potential to write better policy, but our political class seems to only listen to what they want to hear #BillC18#OnlineNewsAct
