In the US you might want to check out System76 and their laptops (and Pop! OS). If in Europe, Tuxedo Computers and Tuxedo OS might be a good choice.
And man, Rayner is such a Shran character, this is EXACTLY what the show needed two seasons ago. Burnham only shines when there are people who push back, like Book or now Rayner. Enjoy that!
Watched the second episode of #TheAcolyte and it is still ok. The second episode was a bit better than the first, enjoyed the alien designs and the city and all that. The story moves forward with every episode so far, compared to #Ahsoka this is lightning fast. And I prefer that much more, the show doesn’t keep you hanging, it always solves some plot points and sets up new. I‘d still prefer this whole thing to be a movie, a proper #StarWars movie, remember those?
@stpaultim For me movies just hit different. And especially with Star Wars it's such a big screen event thing. The shows are so-so (Andor and all the animated stuff is good to great, the rest varies wildly for me) and the use of the Volume in most of them makes them all look a bit dull.
It took an outrageous amount of effort to get the Blu-rays to play correctly on my mom's TV, but it's happening!! Mom's first ever #Babylon5 rewatch has commenced! (She binged it something like 25 years ago and liked it but doesn't remember that much)
@Longplay_Games I just wonder why all the political activism I see on social media is not focusing much stronger on changing the voting system. There’s an NGO with FairVote that people could jump on. And without a change in the voting system you can’t have real political change in the US.
Folks, in a weeks time the most important #EuropeanElections in your lifetime is happening. The long-standing centrist majority in the #EuropeanParliament is in danger from the extreme right. And don't let yourself be fooled from people like Meloni or Le Pen distancing themselves from the AfD: their intentions are to lure the center-right towards them and build a new majority beyond the center-left, beyond the Social Democrats, Socialists, and Greens. So VOTE for a center-left or left party!!!
Also: VOTE!!! The more people voting means that the relative share of the extreme right will go down = the old centrist majority can hold and things like the #GreenDeal can continue. Otherwise we will see a rollback on environmental policies and a gridlock over the next 5 years. #EuropeanElections
Modding your body and endocrine system? A lot of folks doing coding? Openly living as the political targets of conservatives in power? Getting meds and supplies off the internet and via whisper networks? Colorful hair?
I was just reading up on Covid again. Official death toll is about 7mn people. But I was reminded about a piece in The Economist two years ago, in which a model was shown that esimated the true number being around 3.3x as much. If that model still holds, we are talking about roughly 23mn people worldwide. At the same time, it is estimate that in the EU alone around 14mn people suffer or have suffered from some form of long Covid. This thing will haunt us for years to come.
What is wild to me however is that we do not talk a lot about it anymore. I always wondered how the Spanish flu seemed to vanish in the history books so quickly. But now I understand...
Hm. I'm torn on this one.
On the one hand, it's the first of RTD's episodes I think has wholly worked as an episode... but on the other, that's because it's RTD not really writing Doctor Who - like a lot of his more successful stuff in genre, it feels more like the weirder end of British SF&F TV - your Sapphire and Steels and The Prisoners in different senses - than Dr Who. #doctorwho#73yards

@aoanla This is what puzzled me in the first place. I immediately thought of stories like The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit, The Doctor's Wife, Battlefield, The Demons etc. etc. There's so much in both classic and modern Who that is way more fantasy than sci-fi, so it felt a bit odd to say "now we can do stuff we couldn't do before".
Hot tip for anyone interested in getting into (modern) #DoctorWho

@aoanla Oouuh boi… s12 Villa Diotati might’ve made the cut, this is excellent. But then it ties a bit too much into the finale. And Fugitive is good but sits at a weird place with its connection the finale. The rest of s12 was mostly fine but not really good. And the less is said about s13 the better… Let’s just say I‘m not the biggest Chibnall fan in the world 😉
There's probably one issue I have with a lot of RTD-written episodes of #DoctorWho Season One: they rarely establish a rulebook and play by it. It's all very vague and whimsical a la "and then this happened". In "The Giggle" we had some rules laid out with the Toymaker but e.g. in "The Devil's Chord" I had no idea why stuff that happened actually happened. It's a bit similar with "73 Yards", which was held together by atmosphere and Millie Gibson.
@aoanla True, RTD has his style. But here it seems amped up to eleven, it all feels a lot like wiggling your arms and see what kind of card falls out of your sleeves. I don’t mind magic in DW, but you need some kind of rules to not make it meaningless. Again, I enjoy the characters of the Doctor and Ruby, I love Boom and am intrigued by 73 Yards. I just wish it wasn’t all mystery box trick of cards.
