@mrcompletely thanks for all the jazz recommendations today. I was already aware of many of them, but definitely not all of them. Sharing music and making music recommendations is the best thing a person can use social media for imo.

@chris glad you found some stuff you like! That's the best

Crushing inflation. Massive continuing upward transfer of wealth. Billions spent to accomplish nothing re long covid. Drilling permits in the arctic. Another interest rate hike…..but at least it’s not Trump? of course I don’t support Drumpf I’m just wondering where this is headed…

Ya know I think I've dropped just about enough breadcrumbs to get everyone started on the UK scene though there are still a lot of great (or at least popular) names I haven't gotten to but I want to close with one of my favorites from just before most of the current wave - a huge track from Kevin Haynes Grupo Elegba. Haynes is a serious Santeria devotee and his music blends spiritual jazz, and West styles; when the kora drops at about 8:30 🤯

The many, many styles of from are another of my obsessions and I'll do a similar post barrage on that topic sometime in the future (for now if you're interested follow @cybeardjm whose posts have a wealth of great links). But the hypnotic, surging cascades of a great kora player always move me deeply and in the context of this floating spiritual jazz it can't help but remind me of the glissandos of Alice Coltrane. I wish there was a LOT more music like this - am I missing any???

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@Justweiss cheers - thread these together for a great playlist and then follow the trails out from there - literally every Shabaka project and album is worth hearing just to start!

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@cybeardjm thank you!!!!

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@cybeardjm I love the sound and style of the instrument but I definitely am looking for players that are trying to expand the vocabulary and range

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@SquirrelyGrrl @cybeardjm this is the track I was talking about... The first several minutes are great uplifting spiritual jazz, then the kora kicks in which has the Alice vibes.

@SquirrelyGrrl @cybeardjm all the drum parts for this album are taken directly from Cuban Santeria ritual drumming. Each one is dedicated to a particular loa and in ceremony would call in that loa to ride one of the dancers - riding is a form of positive, voluntary possession. Haynes created a modal harmonic vocabulary to go with each drum mode.

@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@SquirrelyGrrl @cybeardjm yeah he's serious about the Grupo Elegba thing. Of course Elegba is the Opener, the Pathway and Doorway, syncretic with Ganesha and Hermes in various ways, so Elegba opens the path for the other orisha/loa to ride in on the various rhythms

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@cybeardjm @SquirrelyGrrl yes, certainly. That's powerful stuff and I know it's central to the early Poly-Rythmo sound. That was part of what initially drew me to it; my ex was a santeria initiate and I spent some years getting to know the tradition and its African roots through her. I haven't heard Gangbe though. I'll absolutely check that out!

Us3 - "Cruising" (1993)

The debut album from British jazz-rap group Us3 really holds up.

Its mixture of jazz and hip-hop, with material from popular jazz musicians of the 20th century being reimagined, is such a cool concept. And all the samples are from old Blue Note Records classics.

@cybeardjm @greymatter @Defiance this DJ Premier/Branford Marsalis collab from the mid 90s still bangs. Preemo just slicing and dicing em

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@Defiance @cybeardjm @greymatter I just posted a bunch of modern stuff today out of the UK under the hashtag that includes a few great hiphop crossover tracks, but the big thing is that ALL the hot young UK jazz drummers are hip hop heads so it's infusing the music from the ground up. But there's a ton of stuff via the Blue Note catalog including this masterpiece from Madlib

@cybeardjm @Defiance @greymatter I got to see Buckshot on their first tour twice. Both shows were jaw dropping. One of them in particular featured the turntables as a jazz soloing instrument

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@Defiance word, enjoy!

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@greymatter @cybeardjm @Defiance fantastic track

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@greymatter that first Buckshot show was one of my most random gets. I was driving cross country with my ex, headed out to Oregon where I live now, and the transmission blew out in the car in St Louis. Randomly turned out it was under warranty so we posted up a couple days for the repair and holy shit look what's playing at the local venue?

I spent most of the 90s chasing live music, and worked at a venue and for a promoter up thru 03 so yeah caught my share. Blessed in that way.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@greymatter @Defiance @cybeardjm those are all great great links. MMW changed my perception of live music in a huge way the first time I saw them. Super heady jazz improv but so danceable. Crowd just getting absolutely sideways. Kung fu spin kicks and deep knee bend shit

Digable was a delight. I have really liked a lot of the smoked out Shabazz Palaces stuff that Butterfly from Digable got into in the last decade. That's a cool little project

CobaltVelvet, to random

do you have a favorite way to learn about jazz. like a good mix of history and music theory would be perfect

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@ardgedee @CobaltVelvet in general the method you're talking about is right. Jazz is about lineages and movements. So for instance say you start at Kind of Blue because you checked that out and dug it. You might then work out to other Miles albums of the same era, and then surrounding eras, and albums by the sidemen on that album (e.g. Trane, Cannonball, Evans etc). Whatever the first thing you like is, work your way out from there. Jazz is all interconnected in those ways

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@ardgedee @CobaltVelvet no worries. I mostly agree about US jazz with the exception of the avant garde which is still pretty active in NYC and Chicago but that stuff isn't for everyone and especially usually isn't a great starting point unless you're coming in with really experimental tastes already

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@ardgedee @CobaltVelvet my personal starting point was thru Bitches Brew but now I love everything from Louis Armstrong to spiritual jazz and a lot in between. But I explored one link at a time. Miles electric to Miles traditional. Miles to Herbie and Shorter and Trane. Trane to Monk thru their connection. And so on like that. One thing leads to another.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@ardgedee @CobaltVelvet lmaoooo yes it's easy to end up way in the deep end or off in some wild corner

Today I think I'll post a series (not a thread, for better discoverability) on the and related and fusion/crossover scene. These are just my favo(u)rites and not intended to be definitive or anything like that. Right up front I need to shout out my friend @LostReflector who has been a big part of this journey with me.

We start with the mighty Shabaka Hutchings and Sons of Kemet. Just watch it. He's a fucking titan.

@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@BEK97 @LostReflector McCraven is pretty great. His whole trip of coming to a city and just rustling up the local hitters to make an album on the fly is very cool
