Not linking directly because I don't want to shit on projects I believe are genuinely trying to make the web better, but every time I see a post about "the small web" or a more "humane" web or whatever that includes phrases like this about content: "created without the motivation of financial gain" I sigh so deeply lol

I am begging ethical web enthusiasts to understand what an extreme privilege it is to spend time working on something without worrying about money

The bald eagle could have easily gone extinct. But we did all sorts of "woke" things protecting it legally, ran conservation and study programs, banned DDT (that was good for other reasons too) and in 2007 they were removed from the endangered species list.

Likewise pine forests could be dead from acid rain.

The ozone could have a huge hole.

We CAN take care of nature when we want to. And the successes have been worth it.

I feel like we forget this, you know?

Fuzzy caterpillar? Nope! This Hubble image shows a runaway star plowing through a region of dense interstellar gas, creating brilliant structures and trails of glowing gas. The effect is known as a bow shock.

Busily spending part of my weekend enjoying one aspect of my job at the Archive - sorting through uploads of a certain type - in this case, anything calling itself a "Manual". There are hundreds of people uploading a single manual for the most obscure of things, and the style and breadth is amazing.

Do people want to be productive? A perspective from a PhD scientist studying innovation on software teams:

Yah, when the benefits flow to them.

Nah, when the benefits don't flow to them.

Hell nah, when actual damage flows to them instead.

Ok we solved Developer Productivity. Good talk.

It's that time of year! We don't sell plants until we can definitively identify them as female, distinguished by the little white "hairs" (called "stigma") protruding from the green pod-like "bract" (what most people call a "calyx").

Once a plant declares its sex this way, we can sell it. Once we identify males, they go into the compost. (Though we do occasionally save a few for people who want to juice the leaves or dabble in breeding.)

We guarantee our plants are female, but it's critically important that anyone growing cannabis understand that ANY cannabis plant, whether from clone or seed, can produce male flowers at any time in its life cycle. This happens due to stress, genetics and possibly other factors. So check your plants regularly throughout the season or you could end up with a seeded crop.

A close-up of a cannabis plant at the node where a small branch comes off the main stalk. There is a tiny green pod like structure with two tiny white hair-like structures protruding from it. An arrow points to this, labeled "female pre-flower."

Transcendent song 🇧🇷

Melodies galore. Best descending bassline you will ever hear. Amazing bridge with swooning strings leading to cathartic landing. Trippy background vocals make me wish I was on mushroom tea. And Jorge Ben’s vocal phrasing just takes you on a ride. Sublime.

Recently finished and recommend Shadow Speaker by Nnedi Okorafor aka @nnedi. I haven't read everything she's written, but everything I have read I've liked a lot, so I'll certainly read the second book in this series. She writes everything from "good for adults too YA" like the Binti stories to "very much NOT for youth" like the superb but intense Who Fears Death. Shadow Speaker lies somewhere in between, I'd say, and I enjoyed it a lot.

The son who avoided a TBI this morning has delivered! As promised, Cupcake is on her back in play-off form taking full advantage of the perfect combination of full sun, perfect temperatures, and a cool breeze.

Pinchy is definitely over-performing in her favorite indoor nap spot. She's typically in a tight curl, so the full extension curl with chin perched on paws is a high degree of difficulty and a real stretch for her.
