@RainofTerra @grimalkina @mononcqc @CSLee if the core concept of the staff engineer from an org chart perspective is "how move past senior and into a leadership role without getting direct reports" (which for me it is) then we should recognize that it comes with burdens of leadership. The biggest one is the responsibility of being the "buck stopper", the problem solving authority of last resort. One way I approached this was to create a peer group for this highest technical level 🧵

@RainofTerra @grimalkina @mononcqc @CSLee the group was staff engrs plus dev team leads plus a couple very senior senior titles. Originally created to handle a long platform migration task, this group crossed all depts and just put every super senior tech talent in the room for a short but fairly frequent meeting. They became not just tech advice but emotional support for each other. I knew it was really working when we finished the migration and they unanimously asked to keep the meeting. 🧵

@RainofTerra @grimalkina @mononcqc @CSLee the point being, of course, that not only can these people help each other with work issues, they're the ones who understand what each other are going through. So they are best qualified to give support.

I ended up doing the same thing for PMs, who similarly work apart from each other - they don't regularly interact with people who do the same work they do. So I started a "best practices" meeting that turned into a peer support group. Good stuff

@kurtsh well, he looks nice in a suit, and I guess they're having a hard time finding other volunteers to be LeBron's scapegoat after next season turns out a lot like this one. An arrogant, inexperienced guy LeBron can push around seems perfect.

(note that I love on court LeBron. His increasingly weird manner of running the team keeps getting weirder though)

@Phreba oh its definitely a thing. There are def people trying to even it out but you're still much more likely to hear certain positive traits associated with white players, especially "cerebral" and "gutty" and their synonyms, and the whole "plays the right way" thing.

@bourgwick thanks, I knew there was something out there I couldn't recall. They're hiring a few engineering lead positions, which based on this background likely means one of two things: it's a death spiral and they're losing important people, or they're replacing people who fucked up some of these things over the last couple years.

@bourgwick kind of a downer but imo the most likely business scenario here is that they get sold for the value of the data, or do a partnership, for AI/LLM training. I doubt any buyer cares about the business and they could even scrap it. Low margin retail biz with an antique tech stack isn't worth shit. A giant, extremely rich crowd sourced database is worth a lot.

There are a few deal breakers I'm looking out for: genuinely lunatic executive leadership and/or those with a snakey golden parachute "pump the value and sell" plan, and companies in an unbreakable financial death spiral. @Stoneycase leftist takeover of the democratic party is the only path there is long term. No one likes it and no one listens, but I've been saying it all along, I've always been right and time just keeps passing. It's not even complicated, just a lot of work and slow. But it has the advantage of actually being plausible
