I'm ready for pre-moderated groups on the fediverse. Trolls clearly enjoy the magnification effect they can have by spreading hate speech to everyone subscribed to a group, but groups are also used by spammers, can also just have off-topic posts, or reply posts that probably aren't of general interest. Pre-moderation of posts by volunteer moderators could make groups more useful and less harmful.

Just put in my last seeds for winter stratification. I have Viburnum nudum (possumhaw viburnum), Kalmia latifolia (mountain laurel) and Phytolacca americana (American pokeweed).

npdoty,

@evan curious to hear how it goes with Kalmia latifolia. That's such a beautiful flower and interesting tree/shrub. I would love to start several in our neighborhood (as a barrier, instead of metal fencing), but it's often hard to get from nurseries/plant sales and I've heard it's hard to cultivate.

Currently sleeping the sleep of the righteous, @andrew was up way too late building tools to fend off the current wave of fedi spam, playing whack-a-mole with bad accounts, and getting fedi friends up and running with their own blocklists.

I’d like to convene a discussion this week or next to do a mini retro on this attack and some work around fedi spam fighting tools. If you’re interested in the discussion, @ me your email or send one to spamretro at hypatia dot ca and I’ll loop you in on it 🙏

Would love to have a proper UR/UX person on the call, I’m a mere amateur at that part 😅

Edit to add for reach 🚀

npdoty,

@leigh @andrew this sounds like such a great and useful community contribution!

If you want to know which web technologies are part of Interop 2024, this is the place to get in-depth explanations.

Learn what the technology in each focus area does, and what benefit Interop 2024 will bring.

https://webkit.org/blog/14955/the-web-just-gets-better-with-interop/#the-2024-focus-areas

npdoty,

@jensimmons @dontcallmeDOM @bkardell what do we need to do to get Privacy as an area for Interop 2025?

I was a little too late to get even a single privacy feature in for this year, but I think it's a glaring omission and want us to do better next year.

This is probably an unpopular opinion on here, but I donʼt think weʼre going to get to a sustainable world by asking individuals to give up convenience and comfort.

There will always be small groups of people willing to do that for the greater good, and vast, vast mobs of people who wonʼt ever consider it no matter the messaging. To create a better world, youʼve got to win over both of those groups of people.

npdoty,

@monkeyborg I don't think individual austerity is necessary or, as you point out, feasible as a political matter. On the other hand, pretending that there won't be any changes necessary to anyone's daily life would also be misleading and unhelpful.

Indeed, I believe that muddling that distinction is the intended strategy of fossil fuel salesmen. They will try to pretend that any change at all (electric cars and bikes, or fewer unnecessary flights, or meat substitutes) is painful austerity.

You might already have a legal right to opt out of the sale and share of your data – wouldn’t it be nice for your browser to handle communicating that to all the websites you visit?

I don't love the idea of my money going to fund the companies destroying the world, but most mutual funds seems to do that, and the banks, who knows what they do?

So I've started a bit of my money in solar panel infrastructure trough . They show me exactly where my money goes, and to what: Installing rooftop solar!

I'm supposed to get my money back w/interest, but there's ofc a risk. But the risk from investing in world destroyers is worse, IMO.

    npdoty,

@forteller this sounds great! Unfortunately, I can't invest as I'm in the US and Trine only offers that service in EU/EEA countries. I'll stay on the lookout for options in the US.

The Department of Homeland Security wishes to incorporate by reference Mobile Driver's License standards (ISO/IEC 18013 series) into the rules for TSA and REAL ID, and several states have already implemented compatible IDs. Each ISO standard costs hundreds of Swiss francs to read, and you must agree not to share a copy with anyone else.

How much is it reasonable to have to pay to see the privacy and security details of the basic government infrastructure you rely on?

    @timbray

Succinctly put, and I agree. It's not that federation is so easy and wonderful, it's that it's the only plausible way forward. A singular global conversation space with global content moderation hasn't worked.

    has become quite expensive.
    I have paid a subscription since 2004.
It wasn’t always expensive but I have been reconsidering for a while.
Now it’s pretty expensive, and I stopped using it when things went sour between my kid’s dad and me.

Since 2016 I have meant to pick up where I left off. But it probably won’t happen although I ABSOLUTELY LOVE and particularly post processing ♥️

I requested my data (1 zip file of account data, 12 zip files of photos and videos).

    npdoty,

@koalie I'll be sad to miss your photos there, I always appreciated them.

It is definitely a significant expense, though I think it's a reasonable one, and hopefully a more sustainable business model and sustainable service this way (though it's hard to ever know that for sure).

    ben, to ai
    @ben@werd.social avatar

I strongly disagree with this stance. Allowing your work to be mined by AI models should be opt-in only - otherwise there is no possible way for a publisher or author to apply a license or grant rights. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2023/aug/09/google-says-ai-systems-should-be-able-to-mine-publishers-work-unless-companies-opt-out?utm_source=werd.io&utm_campaign=mastodon&utm_channel=mastodon

    npdoty,

@ben I'm not sure I follow. A person or organization who opts out would then have the possibility to license their content for a particular use, like training AI models.

(Indeed, when I've spoken to publishers about this, they have specifically indicated an interest in being able to opt out so that they could then offer a paid license.)
