Alrighty..! I think I got it all ready for the migration 🤔

  • New server within local (mstdn) network
  • Setup new Mastodon server that's ready for a database import

On new server:

  • Smaller main server
  • Scalable volume for database
  • Scalable volume for search db
  • Scalable volume for extra backups

Now I'm waiting for a good moment to power down Mastodon, start backups and wait for that until that backup can be reimported on the new server via the volume!

Today, @jorijn and @ruud had a session where the handover of toot.community to the Fedihosting Foundation took place.

This foundation is a non-profit setup by @ruud and @stux which owns many fediverse platforms like mstdn.social, mastodon.world, lemmy.world and others.

For the users, nothing will change. Just keep tooting as you did before. Any questions can be addressed to this account, or mailed to support@toot.community.

We will move to new servers, but that’s because we want the setup to be the same as the other instances, to simplify management.
It won’t be the same servers as lemmy.world , so normally they shouldn’t impact eachother. It will be in the same Hetzner account as all other instances (currently toot is also running in Hetzner).

The Patreon and Ko-fi have also been handed over to us.

645 days after setting up my own Mastodon instance, I finally tackled tuning my Postgres database config last wk & today setup multiple Sidekiq Processes after my queue got to 10K for the second time this wk

I read the guides multiple times over those 645 days but it never clicked in my head. I was afraid to mess with Sidekiq because I didn't want to brick my instance.

Then today, during the thunderstorm, the old grey cells clicked in and I understood.

Queue cleared up quickly

@paul @trendless @shanie Don't know if you already know, but when you specify '-q push -q pull' it will do push first, and if there's no more push to process, start with pull.

Also from your notes it seems you now only have default, push and pull queues. If that's the case, you're missing the scheduler, mailers and ingress.. or I misread your note.

@paul @trendless @shanie Yes it looks OK. You could give a second queue to the ‘default’ and ‘ingress’ processes so they do something when the default and ingress queues are emtpy.

I have way too many configured now, but who knows maybe one day there might be a new user influx and I’ll be ready :-)

After 15 years of using an iPhone, I'm considering switching to Android. I've ordered a cheap Samsung just to try it for a while before buying a top-end model.
Let's see if I can get used to it.

(I'm also a Mac user so there will be some trade-offs..)

I really like the Busycal iOS app, does anyone know a good alternative? It syncs with my calendar & tasks on Nextcloud.

@DismalManorGang I used the Setapp version too but was just using 3 apps so in the end was cheaper to just buy those apps and cancel Setapp.

There are no carrier-modified phones here, afaik. I’ll just go for a cheap Samsung which will surely have a lot of their bloatware on it, but I don’t mind. It’s more about seeing if I can do what I need to do with a phone using Android.

(For photos I use my synology and am trying Immich)

I've tried Android for 2 weeks on a cheap Samsung, and am getting used to it. Just a few things from the iPhone I am missing, but overall finding my way in the Android ecosystem. I really like how you can tweak the interface as you like it.

So now I've bought a S24 ultra, and so far loving it! Really good quality phone, and a bit cheaper than the iPhone I had.

Just see for yourself, and it's fine to either use it as a second account, or you can decide to migrate your current account to it, if you really like it.
