For those who aren’t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.

From the Microsoft FAQ: “Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything you’ve typed and viewed in one database.

Just to clarify, I can access it without SYSTEM too. Microsoft are about to set cybersecurity back a decade by empowering cyber criminals via poor AI safety. Feature ships in a few weeks.

Bristol came so close to having the first Green majority on a upper-tier English council.

Edit: Here’s what the results imply for the Bristol Central constituency in the upcoming general election: https://iamkate.com/data/bristol-central/

If you give someone a program, you may frustrate them for a day.

If you teach someone how to program, you can frustrate them for a lifetime.

Spent some time in court today arguing that the is wrong... and the judge agreed!

Although it wasn't a complete success, it wasn't an unmitigated disaster and I'm actually quite pleased that a court agreed that the ICO's interpretation of the UK is bonkers.

You think that the term "debug" means "remove a bug"?
In fact, it comes from a French prefix "deux-" (two) or "de-" for short, because after the debug operation, you have two bugs instead of one.

Absolutely losing it after discovering what3words took control of the whatfreewords domain by arguing that "three" and "free" are indistinguishable when spoken.

Today I was reminded of the best description of IT I have ever encountered: My first IT job, my boss explained IT this way:

“It’s like being a doctor & you’ve a patient sayings:

“Doctor, it hurts when I stick a fork in my eye.”

You, being a doctor, use your knowledge & expertise & tell the patient to not stick forks in their eyes.

They say: “You misunderstand: I want you to make it stop hurting.”

IT in a nutshell: the unending quest to make it not hurt when they stick a fork in their eye.”

Last time I brought this up on a UK-based technical mailing list, an entrepreneur—themself from a historically persecuted ethnic group—told me that, "no one cares".
Well, I can't make anyone care but if you are in the position to advise on or choose a domain name you should maybe at least know some of the history behind .IO before buying one. Read this article from @cariad

Our son is taking part in a social experiment.

He has to wear a tory 2024 t-shirt for 2 weeks and see how people react. So far he's been spat on, punched, had a bottle thrown at him and hit on the head with a shoe.

I'm curious to see what happens when he goes outside.
