A bit of discourse that always riles me is the notion that the Left created fascism through fighting fascists rather than debating or befriending them. What's completely ass-backwards about this account is that, regrettably and embarrassingly, anarchists and socialists were slow in turning to militant antifascism.

Anarchists and socialists in Italy were friends with many fascists. Rudolf Rocker publicly debated Otto Strasser in 1930 before a combined nazi and anarcho-syndicalist audience.

@rechelon did early socialists have a right-libertarian debate bro mentality?

Vinyl collectors: I love vinyl. Sure it’s inconvenient, but it’s worth it because the sound quality is better than Spotify.

Also vinyl collectors: I hate 45s! Sure they have better sound than LPs, but they’re so damn inconvenient!

thomasjwebb,

@atomicpoet I only collect 45s

You know what’s funny? Yesterday, someone was telling me that CDs are obsolete because of Spotify.

Well, I don’t have Internet at home for the next two days. Even if I wanted it, there’s no Spotify for me.

You know how terrible the next few days would be without physical media? You never thought about that possibility, did you?

thomasjwebb,
@thomasjwebb@mastodon.social avatar

@atomicpoet that's such an odd thing to say. Spotify is more analogous to radio. The modern replacement for CDs would be audio files. Spotify premium lets you cache the files for offline use, but that is not the same. There's no real old analog to that because it's dumb and weird and should go away. Stream capture is like tape recording radio except not enough people do it.

    @lzg @jwz I think the "you want" part matters - I don't think anyone wants a job that they are way underqualified for because that would be stressful and you'd get fired right away. The issue is more people just randomly applying to every job they see on a board, not even looking to see if the job in question meets their own requirements.

    Something that shapes a ton of my life is I don't, by default, believe "stupidity" exists. This instinct has serious upsides. It cultivates empathy and self-challenging, a tendency to talk straight and spend endless time reading my enemies. But it also means that when I encounter someone with access to relevant knowledge making patently bad arguments or being slow to grasp a pattern immediately obvious to me, I presume active malice rather than limited cognitive resources.

    thomasjwebb,
    @thomasjwebb@mastodon.social avatar

    @rechelon same except with the terminology, to me “stupidity” refers to intellectual negligence/dishonesty. Like when someone says what they must know is incoherent, like “the final virus is communism”. They are capable of knowing better and that’s the most damning thing of all. And yeah I do look into what’s the underlying logic of people I disagree with and that’s annoying because when they’re misunderstood I don’t want to have to semi-defend them.

    As a non-American I’ve said this before and I’ll say this again: anyone from countries that say things like ‘I can’t believe how screwed up America is!’ (1) I agree with you and (2) you should probably also look harder at your own country

    thomasjwebb,
    @thomasjwebb@mastodon.social avatar

    @skinnylatte @julieofthespirits yeah if you’re immersed in American culture you know what American racism looks like, which dog whistles are popular here, etc. and Americans often assume our socially constructed racial hierarchy is universal, and not recognize it somewhere else because we’d consider both sides to be the same race here.

    thomasjwebb,
    @thomasjwebb@mastodon.social avatar

    @julieofthespirits @skinnylatte ugh I vaguely remember that. Some leftists also have batty race realists beliefs and that's a bad combo with US's weird race superstitions. Like we think everyone's brain was polluted by the one drop rule.

    I also just find it funny the suggestion of Australia. Don't stay in this settler-colonial state that dispossessed its native people of their land. Move to Australia! 😃

    @lzg I feel like there's a little bit of status signalling in people ruining things on camera. Like they know it looked better before their modifications. Like when people say they "upcycled" something but it was a perfectly okay antique they just ruined.

    @lzg ugh, I found it! This stupid song would send me into a spiral of having to think about breathing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TvlW2qjx_0 especially the part where he says you'll really be in trouble if you don't breathe.

    Ohio shows that the overt trans-obsessed right doesn't sell well to the public, but this murky space of same shit under a different name might. Singal, et al. created this incoherent messaging out of thin air and it's important to ensure the public understands it's the same pro-conversion therapy nonsense that they recoil from when it's spewed by religious right windbags.

It's weirdly disappointing because it means doing all those things wasn't enough. It means there's no "quit chasing rabbits through wikipedia" low-hanging fruit.

    @lzg one of the most evil kinds of misinformation is anything that could constitute bad advice. If the media takes claims of self-sufficiency at face value, they may be giving people who aren’t just dishonest bajillionaires the wrong idea about how feasible certain survival situations really are.

    thomasjwebb,
    @thomasjwebb@mastodon.social avatar

    @lzg I know this isn’t your main point but I always feel like a lot of these fantasies are actively dangerous to people dipping their toes in prepping/survivalism.

    treyhunner, to Economics
    @treyhunner@mastodon.social avatar

    A while back I said I'd occasionally share thoughts here... then I didn't!

    Here are some concepts I feel are far too often undervalued or overlooked when discussing .

    Externalities: we do discuss a subset negative ones (e.g. pollution) but we overlook so many, especially positive externalities!

    Moral hazard: sometimes govt intervention fixes this, sometimes it causes this, and sometimes both at once!

    Opportunity cost: hard at the personal level, but harder govt-wide!

    thomasjwebb,
    @thomasjwebb@mastodon.social avatar

    @treyhunner there's also zero sum fallacy on the right, particularly when you get out of economic contexts (this minority having more rights automatically means that cis het white dudes have less rights somehow). "Immigrants taking our jobs" is the right's version of protectionism (there's also a long history of anti-immigrant attitudes on the left).

    thomasjwebb,
    @thomasjwebb@mastodon.social avatar

    @treyhunner oh yeah. One factor that made the mainstream right embrace protectionism was Trump's rhetoric. He definitely pushed the party in that direction (and added some xenophobic rhetoric to the mix). You could say he's more consistent by marrying that with his anti-immigrant stance. Biden is unfortunately not far off from him on both of those issues (though he's very liberal on some other issues, just not immigration).
