@writeblankspace@fosstodon.org

Year 11 iGCSE student who's interested in tech, music, linguistics, mythology, literature, crochet, art and Taylor Swift. I usually post whatever catches my interest, plus tons of boosts. Also vents from time to time. Learning French for school. I tend to max out character limits and end up threading. Don't say I didn't warn you.

I wax poetic a lot.

@PChoate wait I thought it was Demeter, not Rhea? But yeah 😭

The reason why I don't like to spend money on software is I don't trust the idea of digital ownership. I don't feel like I really own something if it could just be duplicated with a click, or if it could get lost due to a system reinstall or just a bug somewhere.

writeblankspace,

@gregorni This. It just feels like I don't get anything worth it by paying, especially when FOSS and piracy exists.

The word 'candere' is a verb meaning 'to shine'. It's where 'candle' comes from.

From the idea of shining, came the idea of purity and sincerity, which is where 'candid' comes from.

When ancient Romans ran for office, they would wear a shining bright toga. And that's why we call them candidates.

writeblankspace,

@schoudaan sadly, candidates aren't always very candid

today's luckiness scale: 4/10

ah well, it has to get worse before it gets better

3 days ago it was like 9

omg flashcards are paying off

I don't use them regularly but STILL

43/45 on a French reading test isn't bad. I used to be soo shocked to get like 30/45 and realise that's a good pass.

Our teacher keeps saying "omg my work here is done". In early year 10 we were so shocked to see the papers and horrified at how hard they were (we had only just finished the imperfect tense).

writeblankspace,

@HisFavBrunie fr they're effective as heck (esp the spaced repetition) but I just can't get into the mood most of the time lolll

A small reminder of how big Jupiter is.

@muskanity

Earth right next to Jupiter, maybe 1/3 the size of the Big Red Dot. Jupiter doesn't fully fit into the image.

Ngl sometimes I feel like the difference between the programmer mindset and the not-so-programmer mindset is that the programmer is more likely to just Google everything, and the non-so-programmer is more likely to either give up or have to be spoonfed.

Hey, part of programming is knowing how to Google effectively!

NOTE: I mean the mindset, not necessarily the person. Because sometimes I have the not-so-programmer mindset cuz lazy, but the programmer mindset gives me such joy once started.

Why does pre-exam week always make me sooo inspired to do a hundred things I shouldn't be?

Learn GoLang, crochet a scarf, try writing music again, participate on a competition, learn more music theory, jump down rabbit holes and rabbit holes as you fancy!

It would sound like such a good life to live... and ordinary people would say, "wow, you know so much!" because their heads are filled with subjects they were forced to learn and will never use because it's not their passion.

writeblankspace,

It's amazing to pursue your passions, and to hear other people wax poetic about theirs even if you have no idea what comes out of their mouths anymore. It's such an art. These people have such colourful lives. And yet we're all told to do this and that in our teenage years and we're just killing our brain cells.

And yes, I am currently unhinged and super annoyed because school.

writeblankspace,

Imagine what a teenager could do if they were allowed to do whatever they want, with guidance. If we were supported to pursue our passions the same way we are supported to do freaking organic Chemistry even if you want to get a job in tech.

Study, your mocks are coming! It's next week! Your grades will be affected!

Take 30 pictures on your chosen topic by the end of the week, your photography teacher urges!

Finish the other 3 past papers and mark all 9, your chemistry teacher commands otherwise you will be punished

AAAAAAAAAAAAA I CANT

writeblankspace,

Stop making us think about such things before our 2-week mock exams! Let me chill!

I hate school. I hate the concept of school. I hate the freaking system. But I need it so badly because it's the best way to be successful.

Oh, yeah, many successful people didn't finish school. But they're exceptions. If you're not exceptional, you gotta stick to school and make the most of your privilege to get a good life in the future. How stupid.

writeblankspace,

At least I'm no longer in a school where many students end up needing freaking therapists because of such a toxic and stressful school system and environment.

Okay, so for some reason my head decided to bring up the topic of synthesia.

What colours do you see for the letters A, B and C?

If your answer is red, blue and yellow... same!

And I thought, "But wait, I grew up associating those colours! People are born with synthesia, but by definition this is synthesia, right? I associate History class with green because my History book was green. Can synthesia be learned by everyday people?"

(thread)

writeblankspace,

So apparently there are people with synthesia that brings super vivid, even disruptive sensory stuff to them. But what about just random association through learning?

I looked it up online, and I still haven't come to the conclusion yet. Though, it's noted that the letter-colour associations are consistent among many people, and seems to be influenced by those letter-block toys we get as kids where A is red, B is blue and C is yellow.

writeblankspace,

Soooo can normal neurotypical people get synthesia? Cuz like isn't it just basic associations?

Those hallucination-type stuff though, that's not debatable. Those are so surreal I can't imagine experiencing anything similar.

Okay. I will try to start using Firefox instead of Vivaldi from now on.

Vivaldi feels so bloated now. I will miss tab stacks, but I've got Sidebery on my, uh, side. I just need to find a way to get rid of the tab bar (actually the internet tells me how to but I am lazy help)

writeblankspace,

@HisFavBrunie Haaii!!!!

writeblankspace,

@jupritona I considered using LibreWolf, but sync is quite important for me (especially as someone who uses her phone and computer almost equally)
