Just like vinyl, cassettes, etc, owning digital versions of things will come back into style in a big way with a future generation. Having a huge library of my go to music is in my pocket. No data consumption, no subscription, just there to listen to in 24/96. Some of us never left. Wish Plex would serve us better in Plexamp.

I guess HP finally did it.

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/02/hp-wants-you-to-pay-up-to-36-month-to-rent-a-printer-that-it-monitors/

They are now selling printers as part of a subscription service to save you "the hassle of owning a printer and running out of ink".

At least for now, there doesn't seem to be an upfront cost but that may change over time.

: "I hope that now, when you see a marketing pitch or proposed legislation that promises you "ownership" of digital content or data, you will push back. Ask that the people behind it instead explain to you very clearly what rights they are promising you, how they expect to enforce it, and why they think those rights are important.

It was easy to talk about different types of ownership in this post because they were boiled down to the rights involved, and not merely described by the vague umbrella term. Conversely, if I were to use the word "ownership", I might mean one thing, but every person listening to me thinks of something slightly different.

The answers to the questions that I posed about ownership are not simple or straightforward. But talking about them is made much easier if we talk about the rights involved, and not just vague "ownership"." https://www.citationneeded.news/we-need-to-talk-about-digital-ownership/

Really enjoyed @molly0xfff's latest newsletter on . Very good and important points and questions to ask when talking about these topics. Will we see more of this? As much as I enjoy the regular web3 soap opera, I would also love to hear from you on other topics!
Finding your insights well researched and told! Also really like that it comes both in audio and text.

We need to talk about digital ownership #oldaily https://www.downes.ca/post/76246 As Dan Gillmor says, this is a "terrifically nuanced piece" on the subject of ownership of data and digital media.

@oldaily Was going to recommend this article https://www.citationneeded.news/we-need-to-talk-about-digital-ownership on digital ownership to Stephen Downes' Online Learning Daily, but not surprisingly he found it immediately. Academic journalist Dan Gillmor is my friend IRL, residing mostly in this Kansai region around Osaka, so I am fortunate to be able to discuss such things with him and his Japanese journalist wife.

Regarding digital ownership, I cannot think of any way that having my Website https://japanned.hcommons.org/ at the publicly-funded Humanities Commons @hello infringes upon rights I would like to claim as a creator, and I can only hope that their data remains available indefinitely, such as to my 3/4 Japanese infant granddaughter when she grows up.

The reason why I don't like to spend money on software is I don't trust the idea of digital ownership. I don't feel like I really own something if it could just be duplicated with a click, or if it could get lost due to a system reinstall or just a bug somewhere.
