The reason why I don't like to spend money on software is I don't trust the idea of digital ownership. I don't feel like I really own something if it could just be duplicated with a click, or if it could get lost due to a system reinstall or just a bug somewhere.
"The #HouseGOP punched itself in the face to only reach the same #spending deal...There is no substantive difference between the agreement made between Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., despite Johnson’s attempts to say otherwise."
America wastes a staggering one-third of its food, as revealed by a MITRE-Gallup report in November. This translates to an average family of four throwing away at least $1,500 worth of food each year.
#Republicans are #outraged that a program to provide discounted #internet access to #poor people is #spending#money on providing discounted internet access to poor people. You can't make this shit up!
UK consumers are hunkering down as rising fuel prices compound the high cost of living.

There is a fantastic and frightening report at @ProPublica about the failures of the Navy's Littoral Combat Ship. After spending nearly $100B on the LCS program, the Navy got a bunch of ships that could not do the job and are being quickly retired. Military procurement in this country has become a cash cow with Congress looking the other way, to the detriment of our fighting forces.
Since buying #Twitter last year, Elon #Musk has developed a seeming obsession w/the Anti-Defamation League.
Over the past several days, the owner of #X …has posted at least 25 times about the ADL, a #nonprofit#Jewish group that fights #antisemitism.
His fixation grew Mon, when #Musk threatened to sue the group — initially for $4B, & subsequently up to $22B — claiming the org’s criticism of his #management of #X has led to a 60% drop in #advertising#revenue. In 1 post, he said the #ADL was “trying to kill this platform.”
It all began in Nov when the ADL called on #advertisers to pause their #spending on the site “until it becomes clear whether #Twitter remains committed to being a safe place for advertisers as well as #society overall.”
Good article and I'm sure it's all correct. But despite mentioning loads of reasons for the downturn, it fails to mention high prices due to inflation. Most of the businesses being hurt depend on discretionary spending. "Let's spend the weekend in The City." Nope. "Let's go for a drink. Let's go dancing. Let's go shopping." Naw, let's not. People are spending only what they have to spend in order to function.
Americans are still spending as inflation has finally shown signs of cooling. Still, there are some troubling economic signs. Mark Strassmann breaks it all down.
