There's a good kind of politics that should be called civics. The bad part of politics is just manipulating people in order to amass power (vs corporate PR to make money etc). They want to control us and here they are very concerned that this has now become much harder to do. I don't want Trump elected again and I hate that people will always sometimes vote based on bad information but I can't stand these people treating us like children. #uspol

Better ideas don't just win. People desperately hold on even when their own reasoning can't justify it. Look at religion. Look at corporate social media. But eventually, facts and better understandings become undeniable. Once grasped, they cannot be unthought. The "click" is never undone. But the waiting. You want to shake people. That sucks.

Just exactly what needs to be said about our #economics and #uspol today. #Immigration is great in lots of ways but that we can't honestly talk about how it hurts wages is probably the best example of what's wrong with #Democrats today. But seriously, they touch on all the key points imo.

Algos don't help anybody. They just steal attention from some people you follow, to show you more from other people you follow. Or people you don't follow at all. Cause they claim to know better than you, what you want to see. Or say that so they can instead show you other stuff they want you to see. If you think you need them, just follow more people instead. If you're seeing junk without them, follow less people. It's not hard and it preserves our power over the corporate overlords. #SocialWeb

The opposite of the #AttentionDemocracy of the fedi is "their algorithm". Somebody else deciding what you see. That's what the #AI will always be too. "Their agent" who for now seems to work for you, but we all know the inevitable path of #enshittification. #SocialWeb

What most sucks about hating (for great reasons) is that lots of his supporters are working class and disrespected by the elites, so mocking him can feel like punching down. And then saying they shouldn't support him comes off as telling them they're stupid. It's a no-win situation for leftists who put economics first, and most want to improve the situation of these same people, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity or sexual orientation.

An internet for writers

The next step in online social media will be group blogs that support the APIs needed to integrate with not only the Fediverse, but other non-AP services that have their own APIs.

Each one will have a theme, a voice, not all writers in agreement of course, but sharing a similar perspective, context, point of view.

wjmaggos,
@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

@ben @davew

we also need something like to become a standard. like a podcatcher for articles. competing services. pulling in the most popular articles in your social graph. and a way to directly pay writers.

So, I have the feeling that the #fediverse is a very left-wing dominated space. Let's see if that feeling is correct.

Please boost for reach.

I consider myself:

wjmaggos,
@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

@ainmosni

it's a problem. I'm left but I want everyone here except harassers. much of the left today considers views they disagree with and that which they consider misinfo to be so personally painful to encounter for some (or likely to lead to real world harm) such that cutting off access to it is proper for everybody. rampant defederating is justified.

many on the right also want to shut down voices they don't like, but they do it via edgelordism. saying rude shit so others leave or STFU.

With states being more solid red or blue, we need a better way to appoint state Supreme Court justices. Otherwise they will be locked partisan for decades.

Have the lowest level judges appointed by governors when necessary, but then have those judges decide among themselves who moves up when the opportunity arises.

(we should do this at the federal level too.)

Deplatforming is out of favor in Silicon Valley. But it works.

A new study in Nature finds that Twitter's mass suspension of 70,000 QAnon-linked accounts after Jan. 6 meaningfully reduced the overall circulation of fake and hyperpartisan news on the platform. https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2024/06/06/twitter-jan-6-deplatforming-misinfo-nature-study/

wjmaggos,
@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

@willoremus

but it means owners (and the people who can squeeze them) get to make that decision. same with getting the algorithms to boost who/what they want. that's why decentralization matters.

How much is and the support for a strongman president the result of a 50 year effort to make democratic government corrupt and ineffectual? Of course that would lead to incompatible desires to it up and have no government. The people who think they are seeing past the propaganda and discovering the conspiracies, don't know about or can't see or refuse to acknowledge the ones most visible and documented by the left forever.

This ends with people pissed off at both major parties fighting for attention on cable news and social media, voting for an AI government.

Not liking the terminology in this OpenID spec: "A federation can be expressed as an agreement between parties that trust each other."

As a non-technical example, the US of A is a federation. This implies that Texas and California trust each other. Doubtful.

It's also not the same way we think about the "federation" part of the Fediverse, although I'm not sure that we've ever attempted to crisply define what we mean by federation and not.

sounds right to me. trust the other server not to let their users cause problems for the users on my server. opt out not in cause we assume good faith. more like the articles of confederation than the constitution. no greater authority that we all have a say in.

claims Trump won in 2020. So why isn't he investigating and having hearings? Why isn't and his supporters, especially the friends and family of , demanding that he do so?

Same reason nobody tests the communion wafer and wine for transubstantiation. Cause it's a creed, not a factual belief. Your job is to be mostly docile, say the right words and hope the community holds together as long as possible.

Never forget that we're dangerous. The potential of the fedi to upend the power of the already wealthy and powerful to control what the public knows, thinks about and considers as solutions to its problems is revolutionary. To no longer have that mediated by corporations, advertisers and a few people that governments can pressure is a serious threat to them. Publishing via the open web was huge, but so much great stuff never got seen. They are fighting the of the .

Still want to replace liberal.city with a server name and network of users that could be much bigger and stand for a fedi culture that wants everyone here, as long as they don't harass people. Unpopular opinions and facts not currently widely accepted welcome. Not otherwise branded with any specific ideology or community. Anybody else interested?

wjmaggos, to random
@wjmaggos@liberal.city avatar

There are so many accounts trying anything to get the algos to direct attention to them on the corporate silos. It seems inevitable that as this grows with AI and the search for profit, it will drive everyone to the fedi. Or they don't give us a chance and most people just abandon social media.
