Current research suggests this periodic behavior of Magicicada cicadas (emerging every 13 or 17 years) is around 2.5 million years old, but cicadas themselves, as we recognize them, are about 40 million years old and even deeper fossil evidence suggests cicadas have been singing for up to 200 million years (Sota et al. 2013; Grimaldi and Engle 2005).
