Some of y'all are still confused as to why it seems that Silicon Valley billionaires are "turning to Trump." That's because you don't listen to Black people, you disrespect poor white people, and you ignore obvious statistics that have been staring you in the face for decades.

Silicon. Valley. Billionaires. Have. Always. Supported. Trump.

Not because they like the tax breaks. Because they are more likely to be racist, and racism is the greatest predictor of Trump support.

San Francisco political boss Garry Tan is boosting a conspiracy theory about George Soros and ... ME!

Huge victory for the solidarity movement: France bans Israeli companies from a defense trade show.

This is very little, very late, but it is still very significant and hopefully the beginning of larger sanctions against Israeli industry.

Doctors Without Borders forced to close primary care centre in Al Mawasi due to Israel’s offensive in .

We had treated over 33,000 patients at the health centre since February.

This is the second health facility we have been forced to close this week.

Hey Canadian nerds! I have held the domain registration for regex.ca for a very long time. When I lived in Canada it was my primary domain, but I haven't used it for years. Does anyone on the fediverse have a good use for it?

I'm going to release it but if you've got a good pitch I'll pay for a 1 year renewal and then transfer it to your ownership.

Please boost for visibility kthx!

Back from the dentist. Three weeks ago I had Covid, which kicked off tooth pain, now I need two extractions and a root canal. Will cost a fortune. Dentist tells me major tooth problems caused by Covid are commonplace.

My eyebrows hit the ceiling in BC Supreme Court today
It was day 1 of a manslaughter trial and both defense & prosecution set out what’s known as an agreed upon statement of facts
This one included a backpack full of bones

So, one lens on the weird direction of the modern Internet is that entities created to route you to cool stuff, e.g. search, social media, have especially in the last 5-10 years been taking an ever larger part of the pie via having giant networks. Google can now control whether a news site lives or dies. Meta can take 99.5% of all ad revenue displayed next to an artist's work and they have no power.

Long-term effect? Damage to the creative class.

The organizers of @pycon have given community organizers a massive gift 🎁

Let's not squander it!

A sold out #PyConUS 2024 proved that even large events can prioritize safety and inclusion for caregivers and immunocompromised people by way of requiring masks, and gathering venue data to calibrate their policy from year-to-year. Smaller events have proven it's possible at that scale, too.

Now is the time for at least one other large event to step up.

Who will it be? 👀

The bald eagle could have easily gone extinct. But we did all sorts of "woke" things protecting it legally, ran conservation and study programs, banned DDT (that was good for other reasons too) and in 2007 they were removed from the endangered species list.

Likewise pine forests could be dead from acid rain.

The ozone could have a huge hole.

We CAN take care of nature when we want to. And the successes have been worth it.

I feel like we forget this, you know?

Israeli war cabinet minister Benny Gantz, who heads the National Unity party, says his group will quit the emergency coalition government if Prime Minister Netanyahu doesn't agree to his requests, including a six-point plan for the Gaza conflict that will include post-war governance for the Palestinian territory.
