@jeromechoo
It might all be smoke and mirrors anyway trying to obfuscate what they are about to roll out with SGE because we re not there yet by a long way.

ilovechoclates_,

@simoncox My LinkedIn and Twitter feed is full of this stuff lol

A leak of the Google Content API Warehouse docs seem to suggest that many known elements of PageRank are not as important as user click signals.

IOW, you'll continue ranking if you're already ranking. But you won't magically grow organic traffic from Google alone.

https://sparktoro.com/blog/an-anonymous-source-shared-thousands-of-leaked-google-search-api-documents-with-me-everyone-in-seo-should-see-them/

sysop408,
@sysop408@sfba.social avatar

@jeromechoo how would this juvenile with people claiming lately that there’s been a radical shift in the algorithm that’s destroying small online businesses that are now getting bypassed in favor of content farms?

simoncox,
@simoncox@seocommunity.social avatar

Well that was quick...

Google Gemini already admitting that Google have siteAuthority.

optimisey,
@optimisey@seocommunity.social avatar

@simoncox And nary a mention of a cited source... again. 🙄

MikeBlazer,
@MikeBlazer@mastodon.social avatar

Can Google be held accountable for what it shows in the SERPs, whether it's AI Overview or Featured Snippets, if it takes the data from third parties?

If someone dies from eating glue, drinking urine, or committing suicide based on the advice shown in the SERP, who's responsible?

18+ optimisey,
@optimisey@seocommunity.social avatar

@MikeBlazer Another example where Google's pushing answers which are just downright dangerous. 🙁

Yes "They could find that answer on Reddit themselves" but I still think that's not the same as Google pushing this to the top of a SERP.

18+ simoncox,
@simoncox@seocommunity.social avatar

@optimisey @MikeBlazer

Likewise -

This takes you to this Reddit page.

(I'd like to point out this is a non personalised search, vpn'd to the USA! I'm ok.)

Anybody who tells you the top results on Google correspond to quality is trying to sell you something. Literally.

Fizzle_Up,
@Fizzle_Up@seocommunity.social avatar

Is something going on that I'm missing...? Both Bing & Duck Duck Go seem to be down at the moment.

Not helpful when I'm trying to test stuff.

michael_martinez,

@Fizzle_Up @simoncox For alternative search engines that maintain their own indexes, there are always Brave and Mojeek.

I don't consider Perplexity to be a search engine, although some do.

simoncox,
@simoncox@seocommunity.social avatar

@michael_martinez @Fizzle_Up

i was look at Mojeek.com for the first time today and it seems to be good. Though not sure the apparently AI driven summary view works for me!

and co added a new library to the awesome open source Google robots txt parser We've added it to @jammer_volts
& mine's robots.txt tool here: https://tamethebots.com/tools/robotstxt-checker

The last column now shows robots.txt status, lines parsed, How many valid directives that robots.txt file has, and any ones that are not understood, for each URL tested.

Doing some last-minute keyword research for Father's Day - hate to break the news to all you dads out there, but there is a big search volume around terms with the word 'cheap' in them! 🤣

(Plus the word 'father' is starting to look really weird now I've been staring at it for so long.)

simoncox,
@simoncox@seocommunity.social avatar

@Fizzle_Up
Don't forget to research 'returns policy' as well for the post fathers day period..

Fizzle_Up,
@Fizzle_Up@seocommunity.social avatar

@simoncox Thanks Simon! I learnt that one the hard way when I first started out in e-commerce. Let's just say international returns can end up being very pricey!

For all the long and rambling articles about HCU and EEAT, some of the best advice I have heard is just 5 words long and from the Lyrics of a 1970's musical.

So I wrote a rambling article about it...

Looks like it's now time to start blocking accounts that abuse the hashtag on Mastodon.

What do I consider to be "abuse"?

Irrelevant content, frequent self-promotional advertisements for services, stuff like that.

michael_martinez,
@michael_martinez@c.im avatar

@MikeBlazer 100? Wow. I haven't seen that many. But to be honest, a lot of the accounts I block do come from mastodon.social where your account is located.

simoncox,
@simoncox@seocommunity.social avatar

@michael_martinez @MikeBlazer

Interesting that I don’t really get that many - no doubting either of you do but nice that I don’t!

It kind of is inevitable though.

Does anyone have an idea why Bing refuses to index my site, while other search engines like Google or Yandex don't have any issues doing so?
Bing webmaster tools tell me only vague general reasons why it wouldn't work, and none of them are valid.

setto,

@n3wjack they boycott me too, it's a common thing. nobody knows why, i've went through the hoops of talking the their staff. they told me it was resolved but then nothing happened. Moral of the story, i now boycott bing.... the only thing that saddens me is that this whole thing made it clear to me that duckduckgo is just bing in trenchcoat

n3wjack,
@n3wjack@mastodon.social avatar

@setto yeah, that's how I found out. I couldn't search my own site on ddg.
It's kinda ironic. They want people to stop using Google, but their webmaster tools suck ass. 🤷‍♂️

@simoncox This is great. I will turn in next week for sure.

I remember talking with Mary (because she is my WTS mentee) and I am so proud of her to see all the progress she is making.

@MontseCano Forgot to mention you, and @nickwilsdon, were mentioned on the screen during Lorcan Fearon's excellent talk on Shopify!

I'm just going back through replays of talks now.

MontseCano,

@simoncox @nickwilsdon Thanks for letting me know! Did they dislike what we were saying? I do believe we were right in commenting all that

News ≠ Blog and Blog ≠ News

On many sites, I notice that "News" is used as the anchor text for links leading to main blog page. This is misleading. The anchor text for blogs should be "Blog", not "News".

simoncox,
@simoncox@seocommunity.social avatar

@heysannidhi

I believe there can be a very grey line between what is news content and blog content.

Some sites use the blog components of a CMS to run an organisations official news output. Is that blog or news?

On a personal site are articles news or blog posts? The definition of news is not limited to content output from media conglomerates, you can have personal news too.
So yes News ≠ Blog and Blog ≠ News but it does depend!

Fizzle_Up,

Guess what I've discovered isn't fun... trying to update WordPress with Arabic characters in plugins that only function with the Latin alphabet.

simoncox,
@simoncox@seocommunity.social avatar

@optimisey @Fizzle_Up Thought that might be it! Have had small brushes with designing layouts that had to use both LtR and RtL languages pages before and it can be a head spinner!

simoncox,
@simoncox@seocommunity.social avatar

@optimisey @Fizzle_Up

I have never tried designing a page of vertical reading text though!

MikeBlazer,
@MikeBlazer@mastodon.social avatar

What kind of #SEO is it if I have to spend half my day getting LLMs to generate various custom Python scripts that are mainly used to process and manipulate data?

simoncox,
@simoncox@seocommunity.social avatar

@MikeBlazer

That's backend SEO.

Probably.

simoncox,
@simoncox@seocommunity.social avatar

SEO folk are going to rave about @screamingfrog Spider v20 having Chat GPT to write image alt tags (I'm interested in that but lets see how good it actually is at providing correct accessible alt text and not SEO alt text) but for me the biggie is the N-grams Analysis!
(and also the carbon footprint appeal's to my eco warrior side).

#seo

impersonal,
@impersonal@mastodon.social avatar

@simoncox @screamingfrog the custom js could replace quite a few python scripts, methinks!

simoncox,
@simoncox@seocommunity.social avatar

@impersonal @screamingfrog

Quite probably - makes it a more extensible tool!

Here's my thoughts on what I think a better solution for multi-lingual sites might look like: https://github.com/dwsmart/langRegionRelationshipJSON

simoncox,
@simoncox@seocommunity.social avatar

@dwsmart
hreflang is already complex but it really is a complex thing when you try and piece together what it is trying to do. Not sure there ever will be a simple answer so any attempt to make it work better is to be welcomed!

dwsmart,
@dwsmart@seocommunity.social avatar

@simoncox yep, very much of the mind it's always going to be a bit complicated, so you need to embrace that and make it as simple as possible, whilst flexible enough to work.

@Fizzle_Up and literally just got another GSC email with same issue for a different site. Its almost as if someone is playing around with these... 🤣

Fizzle_Up,
@Fizzle_Up@seocommunity.social avatar

@simoncox No way! 😂 They're out to get you! I'm not even going to look at GSC today now, you've given me the fear 🤣

simoncox,
@simoncox@seocommunity.social avatar

All sorts of nonsense going on with a site over the past week. Have a news story on a page that Google Search console is telling me is invalid AMP - tested it on https://validator.ampproject.org/and the code is valid. There are hundreds of posts on this site and has never happened before and the 4 posts following it are ok.

Then three news posts later Google decides to not index a new post because it disagrees with the canonical and chooses a post from 2018! They are completely different!

le sigh

simoncox,
@simoncox@seocommunity.social avatar

@Fizzle_Up @pch

Suspect it will be a frustration!

Fizzle_Up,
@Fizzle_Up@seocommunity.social avatar

@simoncox @pch Unfortunately, I fear the same prospect. It's so annoying that they're not true directives & Google occasionally makes such random choices, as in this case.
