Time for a new hard-surface modeling project, using the trusty MagicaCSG 3D editor: a submarine.

As usual, I'll keep you posted of the progress.

Submarine update…

It's beginning to get definition. Gradually adding details.

More will follow. See other posts in this thread for more work-in-progress impressions.

Submarine update…

I'm really starting to enjoy this. There's usually a stage where you need to bite the bullet, but once you get through that, there's often a "Yes, this is going to work out" moment. 🙂

More will follow. See other posts in this thread for more work-in-progress impressions.

A little submarine design exercise.

Some interesting refractions and internal reflections going on inside the water basin.

Modeled and rendered in MagicaCSG, with a bit of post-processing in PhotoScape X.

Some work-in-progress stages are included.

@metin Great work, especially with the rudder! I love the water block too, it makes a nice diorama and looks like one of those resin models (which I really like) 🙂

@daniel Vielen Dank, Daniel! 👍

@mbt3d Thanks Mark! I enjoyed it.

Re-rendered my submarine model with a slight bit of roughness and volumetric density in the basin water material.

@metin That looks nicer than the previous one, I think the other was too clear, if that make sense. What IOR are you using on this?

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@mbt3d Thanks Mark!

I deliberately made the previous one clear, because I didn't want the water to distract from the submarine design, but now that I've changed the water, the submarine turns out to remain very visible.

I used 1.333, the standard water IOR.

By request of @kbob , here's one more rendering of my submarine, viewed from a different angle. 🙂

See the previous posts in this thread for work-in-progress impressions.

@metin How about showing the sub from more angles? From behind, below, above?

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@kbob I can make another rendering for you tomorrow (it's late over here, and my desktop PC is switched off).

I usually render only one side, because I also model for one camera angle, and spend less time adding details to other sides. But in this case the model is symmetrical.

I'll be back tomorrow.
