A question for Android users…

I've been using Tusky for quite a while now, and I wonder if the official Mastodon app has become better than Tusky in the mean time.

In case there's a new superstar Mastodon app for Android, that'd also be interesting to know. 🙂

Thanks in advance.

@metin I used the official app for a while because I was not really happy with Tusky, and I think it is solid. However, they both had one big problem: when I open the app, my timeline starts with the most recent posts and I have to scroll down to see the older ones, with no indication of what I've already seen. The only app on Android that lets you customize this is @apps (Fedilab), which also has lots of other cool features!

Edit: Added the name of Fedilab for better readability.

In the 2000s, I used to give lectures in working with 3ds Max and the V-Ray renderer. My students were mostly architectural visualizers.

Here I'm giving a 3ds Max + V-Ray workshop at the Dutch EUE 3D event, in a cool old bunker. 🙂

daniel,

@metin Wow, this is really cool! When I was studying architecture in 2010 (before I switched to physics), I also had a 3D modelling course using Rhino. It was similar to yours, also held in a windowless PC pool, but with more glass 😅

However, we worked at our workstations next to the lecturer. Did the students in your courses also have their own PCs to use the software themselves?

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin Oh, I never realized that Rhino uses NURBS 🤯

But this explains why I still do not know how to use Blender after that course 😂

Thanks for sharing, I did not know about MoI 3D, but this looks like a nice tool for CAD! The only other NURBS software I considered was Plasticity:

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin Is there any 3D software you do not own? 😜

This is also what I like most about MagicaCSG. I can create whatever I like without the overhead of other 3D tools!

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin Haha, you have single-handedly funded the 3D industry 😂

All kidding aside, since these are your work tools, I don't think these prices are that unreasonable 😅

@metin Really nice model, looks like a portable version of the HAL 9000 😁

In 1994, our puzzle game Clockwiser was released for Amiga (OCS and AGA), CD32 console, MS-DOS and Windows 3.1.

This is the 4-channel music our composer Ramon Braumuller made for a 𝙙𝙚𝙢𝙤 𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣 that was included on magazine cover disks.

The tune is 109 kilobytes, including digitized instruments.

Download Clockwiser for free here:

@metin Yet another cool song by Ramon!

109 kilobytes is insane! 🤯

Started a new 3D modeling project in MagicaCSG…

I'm in a kawaii mood today. 😊

More will follow soon.

This reminds me of a poster from Fallout 😁

@metin I've just finished the series, it's very good! At the beginning, they could have used less gore (for my taste), but this becomes less of an issue in later episodes. In comparison to the games, the storyline and narrative are much more compact and clear. I think it should be enjoyable without knowing the game lore 👍

@metin Thanks for sharing, very interesting!

As this rather important part is missing from the article, "The thorium crystal trick" also involves (from the paper):

"Placing the atoms in a solid-state crystal lattice confines them to a region that is much smaller than the excitation wavelength (Lamb–Dicke regime), which suppresses the effects of photon recoil and first-order Doppler shift on the nuclear transition".

Explanations of this statement can be found here:

Aaaaand… Time for a new modeling project, in my favorite SDF 3D editor: MagicaCSG. 😊

Here's a first impression. More will follow soon.

@mbt3d @metin Say what you will about AI, but it's perfect for getting a laugh out of a crazy idea 😂

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin @mbt3d I've recently tried generative text-to-music models (namely udio.com and suno.ai) and the results are astonishing. Especially, Suno understands very well what you want and can create full songs in very high quality!

Together with image and video generative AIs, the dead internet theory might soon become reality...

This comparison provides some examples and highlights the strengths of these models:

Just discovered that most of the people I was following over at Bluesky haven't been active there in months, sometimes many months.

I've got a hunch that Bluesky is not going to be the Twitter successor they hope for. 🤔

There's this platform called Mastodon though… 😉👍

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin Plot twist: next he announces he's now on the Mastodon board 😂

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin I would give them the benefit of the doubt. Twitter was a great platform when they launched it. But funding the server infrastructure on top of the development costs is a big challenge. I'm not surprised by what happened to Twitter even before Musk took over. However, Mastodon is essentially FOSS software and there are alternatives. I do not think (hope) that the big tech people will be tempted to make a profit out of it.

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin Apart from that, both administration and digitalization in Germany are in a pitiful state. It makes me really angry that they've thrown away the opportunity to be part of something great and innovative just because of their stupid bureaucracy. And the irony is that the German government hosts their own instance at social.bund.de, so they should know better 🤦‍♂️

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin That's good news (I didn't know that)! However, this could change in a few years. As Germany is a federal republic, each state is independent in its decisions, which are made by the currently elected parties. And sometimes decisions are not made with the future in mind, but according to personal preferences or because some companies pay a lot of money...

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin This happened, for example, in the city of Munich. They had everything on their own Linux distribution and everyone was happy. Then the government changed and they ordered to remove everything and switch to Windows instead.

daniel,
@daniel@social.dhelonious.de avatar

@metin One of the big downsides of capitalism. Communism would indeed be nice if this concept could ever work in reality...

If my MagicaCSG modeling posts have attracted your interest in the SDF modeling method, you might like to have a look at Womp, a free online SDF editor (with a "Pro" subscription option).

I've just played with it for a few minutes, and you can export your scene as an OBJ file, complete with textures for recreating the Womp materials in Blender, as you can see in the screenshot.
