Hydroponics

Any people out there? My coriander is disappointingly leggy. Does anyone else have this problem? Do I need more light? More nutrient? Bury the seed deeper? After a little while the fallen ones die off and the healthy ones become straight (4 week old coriander)

ai6yr,

Hydroponic basil started. Bought a $3.25 basil bouquet at Trader Joe's, and split out the plants... probably a dozen usable plants if you are careful, and you can also clone them from clippings... depending on how much pesto you need

@ai6yr @richrollgardener cloning basil is one of my mum’s superpowers- we LOVE pesto!

InkySchwartz,
@InkySchwartz@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr How do you clone basil?

Ten days in and my little lettuce 🥬 plants are starting to look like lettuces. Today I’ve sown four more.

ai6yr,

@mjausson Woohoo!

How to broaden what comes on the table for dinner:

Help, the Bok Choi is growing much faster than I want to eat the same recipe over and over again. What else can we do with it?

ryansingel,
@ryansingel@writing.exchange avatar

@J12t
A bok Choi version of palak paneer. A pressure cooker v helpful for this.

You can also make the paneer in a pressure cooker from milk and vinegar

@ryansingel Never done any Indian cooking ... maybe I should try!!

My hydroponics system had a great start this year, the salad is almost ready. I also built a second horizontal one. The salad is only for testing, I'm going to plant vegetables there.

New horizontal hydroponics system made out of PVC pipes, salad for testing

jrp,

Is there more details on how you did this? @gardening group

update: I’ve now got 11 pak choi 🥬 in my method setup but it’s been super slow, my suspicion has been that my garage is too cold so I’m now running an experiment, one box is not insulated or heated, the other has a cheap 10W aquarium heater set to 18C and also badly done insulation - let’s see how this goes (also knew all those cheap hygrometers would come in handy!)

ai6yr,

Hmm, one of these is sitting in a dumpster down the street... Do I need to clone 8000 tomato plants?

@ai6yr yes. Yes you do.

It turns out my pump does not disassemble and so it is nigh on impossible to get roots out of it. Which is annoying because I hear it is a common problem! Any tips for removing roots from a tiny pump? I have dried them out so I could try breaking them up and knocking them out. I have also tried cursing. Also various small implements

Fury,
@Fury@mastodon.au avatar

I reset my right hydroponics cubes. It had parsley and dill in each of them. However, the leaves were a little yellow and not appetising 😭 only coriander and basil seem to do well. So I’ll stick with those and have a rolling supply.

@afg

A few suggestions.
Less fert. Perhaps test PH and flush.

Morning dew spray goes a long way.

Think I'll try hydroponics/grow lights this year for indoor plants, any tips or experiences?

joelanman,
@joelanman@hachyderm.io avatar

@siblingpastry Ha I knew someone would read it that way! But no, other plants

@joelanman 😁😇

metalplates,

First run to the hardware store to get started with ! Still need a few more things, but gotta start somewhere.

metalplates,

Holes are finally cut!

metalplates,

And here we grow!

tinker,

@afg - Oh wow! You just steal all of your articles from Reddit, don't you?!?!?!

Here is the original post on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Hydroponics/comments/184qldj/first_time_hydroponic_grower/

And here is your post: https://www.allforgardening.com/686673/first-time-hydroponic-grower/

tinker,

Annnnnd @afg even stole my post for their site!

tinker,

At some point, I'd like to move towards organic nutrients for hydroponics.

Here's an article on using compost tea for hydroponics for example: https://gardenculturemagazine.com/using-compost-tea-hydroponics/

@tinker

Aquaponics would probably be brilliant for the veg stage.

tinker,

If you want to grow hydroponics indoors but you have pets that might destroy the plants, you can place the plants and grow lights behind a cabinet door.

Get one with plastic or glass doors for a more aesthetic look that lets you see the plants. Or! Get a wooden or plastic cabinet with doors that are fully opaque.

Remember the grow lights are inside the cabinet, the plants will grow just fine!

Aesthetic cabinet with glass doors that allow the viewer to see inside the cabinet even while doors are closed.

@tinker how much has your setup cost you so far if you don't mind disclosing? :o I have space in my kitchen but I don't know if it'd reallt be worth it compared tk goinf to the grocery store over however long the machine would last.

@happyborg@fosstodon.org avatar

@mauve
There's a psychological benefit too. Something about the tending and watching a plant grow. Then enhancing your dishes with it, even in insignificant amounts. It just feels good.

I haven't tried what
@tinker is doing and have very little space in my boat but it's interesting. I tend to go for easy wins but am not growing any food right now. I'll get back to it though.
